As the son peeked above the leafy tops of the trees, a lone mare was splashed with the brilliant golden light of the sun. Her gentle browns were lit with a richness, while her azure mane sparkled slightly in the glimmers of light shafting down through the boughs. She stood there calmly, grazing on the rich emerald grass of the clearing. She seemed at ease, comforted, but deep in thought as well.

What life was this that she had chosen? She had deserted a chance at pure happiness, skittish of the lifestyle it would have entitled. Why did humans bother her so much, had she not been born among them? She pushed the thought away for the millionth time, tired of the plaguing thoughts that had been eating at her mind ever since that day. She had left him behind, regretfully, and a child she would never know. However, these days, her life wasn't too terrible.

She had raised two beautiful sons, sons that loved their mother beyond reason. Though Cerek had moments where she wished to trample him, he was still a beautiful stallion - albeit a little too flirty with the females. Khilan, bless his soul, was a gentle male that reminded her far too much of the one she had left behind. He had helped her with Cerek when they were foals and he tried, for his mother's sanity, to keep the boy in line as much as possible now. What more could a mother ask for? A daughter, perhaps. She had always wanted a little girl, and might have one somewhere.

"Live with your mistakes, Shaitani," she whispered to herself, stalking a bit farther from the treeline and out into the warmth of the sun. She gave her head a soft shake, tossing those blue locks out of her equally blue eyes.

He had left his old life behind. His temperment had not changed much, save for the cold spot where painful memories still stirred. He never let himself dwell on those, though. He had Zoet to consider, and she was worth more than anything else in the world to him, even the lost long-ago romance.

These days he resided deep within a forest, hard against the mountains, near the birthplace of a stream that later became a great river. In the shady gloom he paced, a loving and regal lord of his domain, gentle and affectionate father to one fiesty and spirited mare. Zoet had left him for her own life, as it should be. Still, the forest seemed empty without her laughter and her spunky comments.

he smiled as he thought of her. She had always been sensitive to the painful past he avoided, never asking or prodding him about it. But he had eventually told her what she had wanted to know... about her mother, her siblings, and the human he used to share his life with. She had been uninterested in hearing about the woman, but her eyes had lit with a righteous fire when she learned of her mother's abandonment of them.

Sadly he sighed at the though. He knew his daughter now carried a fierce fury against her own mother. He wished it were otherwise, but knew the young mare had every right to her own feelings. Eloran himself never wished to see his once-love again. It would hurt too much, and he wouldn't know what to say.

But there, he was letting himself dwell on it. It wasn't healthy, nor productive. Instead, he turned his mind to a recent land dispute between a badger and his neighbor, a skunk. It was time to put his hoof down and settle the matter. With a lightening heart, he turned his mind to the task, and left the past behind him.
