im being a rythm guitarist on my band(since im also the vocalist) and i've been thinking...
i want ideas to do more that just "chords" or "power chords" as the rythm guitarist, but i dont really know what else can i do to add something to the song.... most songs i write( i write them on the guitarpro) i try to take of my part(the rythm guitar) and it sound just great without it... anyways.. in other words... i dont feel like im really adding anything with my guitar playing to the band(well accept wehen im singing)
so maybe you guys can help me get idea for rythm guitar roles that might add something... and if you could send me a guitarpro file that would be even better

i thank you, whoever is willing to help ^^

try complicated song structures or try to incorporate scales in the song, a rhythm guitarist keeps the rhythm of the song and that does not really mean you are only allowed to play chords, try a few scales with chords.

by the way you never indicated what genre you play.

im metal and prog but regardless what genre you play incorporate more than chords to your rhythm part.

You don't always have to play chords to be a rhythm guitarist. Rhythm guitar, as was previously mentioned, is meant to keep the rhythm, which is also something that the drum/bass/keyboard can do as well (As pertaining to rhythm, beat, melody, atmosphere, etc. etc.) you can be a rhythm guitarist that takes the role of complimenting the lead guitarist as well. Just because it's called one thing doesn't mean that it has to be that one thing, and only that one thing. Music, as in all forms of art, is something that can be whatever you want it to be. For example, instead of just playing a simple progression of chords or power chords, play alongside the guitarist an octave up or down, or with a different affect. Or you can play one thing in the background while the lead guitarist plays a complimenting melody in the lead. Avenged Sevenfold and Dragonforce both do that rather often, as well as Between the Buried and Me and Atreyu. Check out Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho and Roppe Latvalla's videos on Youtube, they're both playing combinations of lead and rhythm at the same time together in perfect harmony.

Never forget: There's always a way to perfect your art regardless of what your role in its creation is.

How about... be a guitarist and not a rhythm guitarist? Don't compose songs thinking "This one will be lead, and this one rhythm". Hell, look at Cynic! They have complicated guitar parts but the vocalist does them WHILE singing. Do that. Write complicated parts and practice singing to them once you get them down good. Or compliment the lead guitar while you sing or something. Harmonize. Play DIFFERENT chords than the "lead" guitar (cause even a lead guitarist isn't all melody). Take melody yourself.

There are thousands of things you can do to make your part more interesting. Remember, "rhythm guitarist" is just a name.
