Do you think it is wrong to bet someone else on something for money? Let's say me and my friend are listening to the radio and the song Love Is A Shield comes on. He says to me "This is Depeche Mode." I say, "It sure sounds like them, but this song is by Camouflage." He says "I've never heard of them and I know for sure this is Depeche Mode. They're one of my favorite groups!" I smile and say "Yeah, I love Depeche Mode too, but this isn't them. Camouflage came out several years after Depeche Mode and they patterned themselves like DM." He says "You wanna bet?"
What do you guys think? Is it ok if I say:
1. Sure. Let's bet 5 bucks. 2. Sure. I'll bet you a milkshake. 3. Sure. But if I win, you're my slave for a day.
or
4. No. I think it's wrong to gamble. 5. No. I don't gamble, but I can show you you're wrong and you have to admit you're a goof! 6. No. Just take it from me and say thanks 'cuz I took you to school and gave you a free lesson!
Which of those do you think is best? Are more than one of them ok? Which of the above would you choose or would you say something completely else.
Do you think it's ok to do small bets, or do you feel ANY type of gambling is wrong? And is it really gambling if I know I'm right? (Camouflage does sing Love Is A Shield and The Great Commandment. Both songs are great and they do sound VERY VERY much like Depeche Mode!

Well, if your betting little things like a dollar or a milkshake with your friends on who's gonna win a match of Guess Who or something, then I think its fine. As long as its not going to hurt the person your betting against or yourself. But it shouldnt become a habbit, and it shouldnt make you mad at somebody if you lose.

Betting is gamboling, and gamboling is wrong in all it's forms. None of the first 3 are right and only number 4 of the last 3 seems right, even tho you're not betting, you're being prideful.

So, you think it's wrong even if you just bet a milkshake?

Yes, I know, you think it's smal, stupid, and pointless. What's wrong? It's just a milkshake. Well that's all it could take.
This sound familiar: "It's just one cigarette." "It's just one drink"
And then: "It's just a bag of cheetos"
Or: "They're not real poker chips."
Satan likes to lure you in through small things like that milkshake, he tries to get you to walk the line where it's easiest to slip and fall. I want to stay as far away from that line as possible!

That's a really great point. Satan uses the small things that are pushing the limit to lure us into sin.
But still, I use that term a lot, "Wanna bet?" sweatdrop My sister and I get into more than a few quarrels over my winning a bet. She will bet on the spot, even if she has no idea what she's betting on. I will only bet if I'm absolutely sure on what I'm betting. But I do agree, it's still another small thing.
Betting is gambling, even if you're just betting half a penny (haha, half a penny... rolleyes ).

I can't argue your points. I guess and type of betting could be consideriner gambling. However, I don't feel it is wrong to bet a milkshake with a friend.
Moderation in all things. I think we're supposed to gamble a little, just not too much! Ha ha, just kidding. biggrin

I don't think it's wrong to bet a milkshake, either. It's a milkshake. Nothing too huge.
Please, just a little? wink

From an ensign article. The prophet says Quote: Gambling is simply a process that takes money and does not offer a fair return in goods or services. To these statements of the position of the Church I add my own. The pursuit of a game of chance may seem like harmless fun. But there attaches to it an intensity that actually shows on the faces of those who are playing. And in all too many cases this practice, which appears innocent, can lead to an actual addiction. The Church has been and is now opposed to this practice. If you have never been involved in poker games or other forms of gambling, don’t start. If you are involved, then quit now while you can do so. President Spencer W. Kimball said: Quote: “From the beginning we have been advised against gambling of every sort. The deterioration and damage comes to the person, whether he wins or loses, to get something for nothing, something without effort, something without paying the full price”

What about raffles? Are those considered "gambling"?

Yeah I would think so. Raffles is almost like the lottery. Then again, most raffles that I know usually go towards helping out a charity/school/ sports teams/something else that is good. razz Although, if you wanted help people to earn money, I would just donate to them.

There is nothing wrong with betting a milkshake. In life it is very important to understand the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. The Israelites only understood the letter of the law. For them everything had to be directed to the most minute (hard U) detail. The law of Moses was given to them because they had to be directed in all things. That is not the type of people we should be. We all have the light of Christ in us and we can use that to govern us. We have prophets and leaders to help us, but not to make all our decisions for us. I am able to feel the Spirit help me and guide me. I know when I do something wrong. I have made many many mistakes in life. The Spirit almost always was there to help me know that what I did was wrong. The Spirit has never told me not to bet a milkshake with a freind. Also, you can get caught in a trap when you decide how far you will go with this. So, if you go to a PTA party and do a raffle, is it gambling? If we do a raffle here on GAIA, is it gambling? I WON a date with a girl in a class with me in school. I was the TA and I told the class that whoever got the highest score on the next test WON a free date with me. Was that gambling? If it was, it was a good decision because the girl who won ended up introducing me to the Gospel. Her father later baptized me. I am still friends with her and her family, even though she and I don't date anymore. So, give a little whistle and always let your conscience be your guide.

Chef_Zolo We had a raffle at church to raise money for youth conference and girls camp. eek Do you think that's gambling and wrong? o_o Really? I guess it all depends on whatever the bishop does. XD My Bishop would probably say no. We do cookie dough fund raisers, yard sales, once we did fudge. It differs each year. ^^;
