I'm getting pretty deep into my novel now. Ok, ok, 12,000 words. But still, I've just about finished parts 1 and 5 (it's divided into five parts... it'll make sense when you read it) and I'm just getting nervous that I'll forget about some subplot somewhere or I won't be able to come up with a clever way for this situation to end or....

or...

I might stop writing this novel.

eek

That's definitely my worst fear. The moment I started this, I thought "but what if I don't finish!?" and it's haunted me ever since. This one has definitely come to the point where, if I stop it, I'm probably done with novel writing. It just gets so discouraging when you lose a project as big hopeful as a full-fledged book.

Discussion:
- Ever worried you won't be able to finish a novel?
- Felt really bad after you gave up on an idea?
- Are you writing a novel or novel-sized story right now?

My first finished novel, I had two more planned, a trio. The story never really finished. But then I found out that it sucked. )))): So I forgot about it. I started writing Ametris.

I'm scared sometimes, when I get writer's block, that I won't finish...I'm not even near completing it, even at over 100k words. But I can't stop, because I gotta get it out of my head...or else I'll go crazier than usual. xd

And besides, I've heard it's a damn good story. mrgreen

Haha, that's half the reason I'm writing my story right now. I just have to get it out of my head before I overthink-it to death xd

i think my novel-writing was weird, mostly because i 100% didn't know what i was doing at all. i didn't even realize what i was writing--i was just writing, just seeing the scenes and recording them as best i could.

and then, at around 20K words, i realized: this...isn't finished. this is...a novel.

at that point, i only knew that. and THEN i started worrying about finishing it. WTF. i don't know why calling it a novel made it easier to imagine abandoning. i think the term "novel" implies a certain amount of commitment, an entire book that will take you longer than an afternoon to read. i know (even though it's finished now) i still feel like i haven't done enough, that i've left it and i shouldn't have.

but what you need to do is let the story decide if it's worth writing. i never made myself write--i don't think a lot of writers do--the novel wrote itself. it became something alive and it only used me to record its intricacies; let your novel be like that and you will finish it if it's worth writing, and if it's worth writing, it's worth reading.

of course, having only recently finished my first novel, i am no expert. but...that's how mine came about: it wrote itself; i feel treacherous even calling it "my" novel.

I agree 100% with Flicker. Though, I wouldnt have finished mine I know. Matt threatened to uh.. lock me in his attic with the spiders if I didnt finish. So I did. Because spiders scare me.

If you are worried about subplots and forgetting binding details.. write them down. Keep a little folder with random notes and such that is just for the story. Write down any subplots and how they connect within the story. This also helps for writers block. Taking notes. When I got stuck I looked back at either the old notes at what I had written about.. or what I plan on writing.
