This time, for sure! He was really going to get it right this time! Just a little. bit. closer. Annndd... Go!
Mtembei had been huddled down against the ground, but now he sprang forward in one great leap toward the flock of birds. The creatures took to the air immediatly, leaving the cub to faceplant on the dirt.
He 'AGH!'ed and huffed and made every possible sound of aggravation he was capable of. This wasn't working! Dad had told him he was too young to learn how to hunt, let alone need to know how. What did Dad know? All he did was walk around and listen to those...those... Those annoying girls.
The flock had settled not too far away. Mtembei had pegged them as stupid, but in truth the birds were lazy and understandablely viewed him as no threat.
If at first you don't succeed...

Sauda really didn't get out much. She much prefered to hang around with her family...which usually ended up being her father since her mother was busy and some of her sisters like to get out and about. But today she had actually wandered off a bit, watching the endless blades of grass pass her by. She wondered absently how so much grass came to be...but those odd thoughts were quickly tossed aside as she saw a flock of birds take flight and then land again.
Curious, but also wary, she flicked her ears back and went to check it out. After being attacked by that warthog she was always careful when she was out. She didn't want to get trampled, after all. She crawled forward, looking very slowly right and left and then over her shoulder and...
Thump! She stopped, having bumped her nose against something furry. She flopped back and blinked to see that it wasn't anything scary (she had almost had a heart attack!). Instead it was a very oddly colored cub.

Oh, for the love of--He couldn't get away from these damn things! 'Things' refered not to an actual object, but to females. They were EVERYWHERE! Was he just sent by some higher power for them to torture!
"Hey!" he hissed. "Do you MIND?!" The loud racket startled the birds. When they took off this time, they took off, up, up, up into the air and flying farther and farther away. Mtembei's eyes widened and he ran out to where they had been, teeth grinding together.
"H-Hey! Wait!"
It didn't surprise him that beckoning them back didn't work. He hissed in frustration and leered at the other cub.

"Sorry," Sauda murmured sheepishly, rubbing her nose with a dark paw. She sounded genuinely sorry, but that was about it. She wasn't about to go groveling around for a common mistake. Blinking silver eyes she watched as he raced after the fleeing birds, something that seemed very silly to her. Obviously the birds would win since they could fly...
After a moment's pause she loped carefully over to where he had stopped and then asked, "Do you like birds much...?" She was assuming that was why he had been chasing them.

"Yes, I LOVE birds." His voice was sarcastic, prepped for the rant that soon followed. Mtembei was just aggravated, and had no problem lashing out at some stranger. Given that stranger was an annoying female, one of many who just COULDN'T seem to leave him be!
"That's why I was trying to catch it, and bite it's head off, because my love for birds is like no other!"

"You're a very angry little boy," Sauda said, blinking her silver eyes. And very silly at that, obviously. "You'd never catch one," she said practically, "which is why I thought you just liked chasing them...since that would make more sense." She flopped back on her haunches, watching the other cub with confusion. She hadn't really met someone unhappy like this...since her sister's were mostly cheerful, if spirited, and her parents were always very optamistic people.

Mtembei knew shouldn't care what some dumb girl thought. That was why, even though her claim he would never catch a bird really, really pissed him off, he wasn't about to let her know it.
"I will catch one," he informed her curtly. Why did all of them insist on lingering around just to bother him? Fine, let her stay. He'd just show her how she was wrong.
His eyes fled around, searching. Bird, bird, bird... Aha! There were a couple!
"Watch and learn," he snarkily told her.
