Well, I've been designing Saiyan Armour using diferent things, most notably Kevlar for the heavy pads and shoulder pauldrons.
Issues I'm having are things like the different colours. I'm wondering if I shouldn't use a thick nylon border over the edges of everything and use that to embed sheets of shiny different coloured plastics into the chest plates and whatnot.
I've kind of figured old catcher's chest plates will make for the best ribbing for the pauldrons and abdominal cover. I can probably use thin Kevlar underneath for the shape, and sew in the ribbing for aesthetics. The only thing truly difficult is what to use to hold a full breastplate shape, or if I should go with a privately purchased and modified Kevlar vest.

I know of a good tutorial that makes amazing armor with wonderflex or foamies. Light, not extremely durable but it holds up well, and fairly easy to manage, it just takes patience.
Other than that, I think your idea might work, I can't really say though has I haven't attempted saiyan armor yet.
