Oh birdies, where are you? Brown eyes scoured the open Savannah of the Pridelands as Nsundu scouted out potential prey. There were usually water birds around here, and the young lioness wasn't going to pass up the opportunity for lunch. That and where there was prey there were other hunters. If she could find a fresh kill or weasel a kill off a naïve youth it would make her life that much easier. If not... well, then she'd have to do the hunting herself. She would much prefer the easier route, thank you very much. But nothing was going to get done by just standing here. She had to find her prey! With a quick glance over her shoulder Nsundu picked up a steady feline trot, on the look out for signs of the birds she was looking for.

Life was...life.
Not to say it was bad. Mtembei was too young to really know any woes and strife. His family was surprisingly stable, given the family itself had sort of formed out of an accident, not that neither of his parents ever told him or his sisters that. They looked like a perfectly normal family, it was just that Banji seemed extra whipped.
Mtembei shook his head at thought. His father hung on his mothers every word. He didn't understand it! What a failure, he would often think to himself. Like now for instance.
Muttering, he rolled back over onto his stomach, huddling farther under the large, towering tree. Ahh, shade! And the freedom from his stupid sisters.
What else could he ask for?

A soft flutter of wings made Nsundu stop in her tracks. Aha! She had found them! Those sneaky birds would not evade her grasp any longer. She paused for a moment to listen for more movement – she didn't want to charge headlong into an adult huntress – before she deemed the coast clear. Nsundu crouched low and began the slow stalk towards her prey.
Ready aaaaand.... CAVALRY CHARGE!
The brown juvenile leapt from her hiding place, paws outstretched. Unfortunately, her claws only managed to snag one of the younger birds. It was hardly even worth the effort. Still, lunch was lunch and she would have to do the best with what she caught. She gave the dead bird a shake for good measure, before a strange coloured cub caught her eyes. The black and white of its fur was fairly normal, but it had these weird purple markings. Huh. Well, a cub was a cub, and she should probably say hi.
Deciding that it was better to eat where it was cool, Nsundu carried her kill into the shade near Mtembei, flopping down near the cub. "Mornin'," she said around the bird in her mouth.

Mtembei looked utterly horrified. Surely, if someone had murdered both his parents and then came here to tell him, it still wouldn't have reached beyond the level of sheer terror on his face.
Girls... Girls everywhere! Ugh!
Mtembei liked to deal with females with the same logic he dealt with every other problem: Ignore it, and it'll go away. It was that theory that allowed him to just turn away from her and curl up, closing his eyes.
Sleep, good. Girls, bad.

Why in her mother's name was the cub giving her a look like that? Nsundu glanced down at the bird in between her paws and then back at the funny coloured cub. Did he not like the sight of blood? Had a bit of a weak stomach? Seeing as he had turned away from her, it appeared that her suspicions were correct. Silly cub.
Nsundu gave a soft snigger, spitting out a feather before addressing her new companion. "You're goin' to have an awful time on your first hunt, tiny, if you can't even stand the sight of birds guts," she teased, unable to help herself. No doubt this cub was a male. Only they would do something as silly as giving themselves a weak stomach.

"Rip it open for all I care," Mtembei snapped. There was nothing worse than being talked down to by a girl! "My problem isn't the bird--or blood or guts." It was her. All of them.
Pride was little of an issue with him in most cases. He was glad to let his bossy sister lead the rest of them around, so if anything bad happened, he could just pin all the blame on her.
But this lioness wasn't his sister, and he wasn't about to surrounder HIS spot to some stupid, annoying, chatterbox female! Hmph.
"Why don't you go eat somewhere else?"

Ooh, touchy touchy. His weak stomach really must have been bothering him. Oh well. It's not like Nsundu really cared. If he was really that bothered he could get up a move. She wasn't part of this pride – and it was a possibility he wasn't either – so she didn't owe him anything, especially not respect.
"No need to get freaky," she replied through a mouthful of bird, "And denial isn't going to help anybody." Nsundu's tail flicked when Mtembei suggested that she leave, though she was grinning inwardly. He was so touchy! She had picked a good spot for her morning meal.
"If you're bothered by it, why don't you leave? You don't own this patch of land. Besides, didn't your mam ever teach you chivalry?" Not that Nsundu believed in chivalry, but it was always fun to taunt young male lions about it.

Stupid girl. What should he do? Stick to the ignore game. Yes, that was brilliant.
Denial? Ignore it.
Suggesting he leave? Ignore it.
Go on about some stupid girl thing? Ignore--
Oh, screw it!
"First of all," he began in a hiss. Mtembei finally turned back around, teeth bared and each and every little piece of fur standing on end. "I was here FIRST, so I don't HAVE to leave. You're the annoying one. Second, I don't know what chale-ver-ree is. Didn't YOUR mom teach you to not be such a pest?! If she did, she wasn't a very good teacher!"

No reaction?
Daaarn, Nsundu was really losing her touch! She could usually get silly little males to flare up in an instant as soon as she started on about chivalry. Unless, of course, they were those nice, thinking kind. The cub in front of her, however, was not one of those. She was sure of it. He would have responded to her when she said good morning if he was.
The juvenile was just starting to think she'd picked a boring cub to argue with when Mtembei finally snapped. There we go! It had taken him long enough, jeeze. She listened as the cub had his say, allowing him to finish his first point before she but in. "I didn't say you haaad to go. I just said that if your weak stomach couldn't handle it then you should simply wander away." The annoying comment made her grumble, however she chose to ignore it. For now, at least.
It was Mtembei's second comment that hit a nerve. Nsundu pinned her ears back, tail flicking angrily. How dare he insult a lioness, and her mother at that! "My mother taught me much better than yours did you, seeing as I know my place and you have no respect for females! I bet your mother didn't teach you anything worthwhile, seeing as you're a boy!"

Mtembei was very childish. It made sense given he was a cub. But he was really, really childish. If someone got on his nerves enough to argue with them, he would say whatever it took to feel like he was winning, even if he didn't really mean it.
As much as he didn't like females, he never had pegged males as above them. It didn't keep him from shouting, "My mother wouldn't tell me ANYTHING about how to act because she is a girl and I don't have to listen to stupid girls!"
He resisted checking to see if Leboya was around. Oooh, she'd get him good for that one if she heard it!

Nsundu bared her teeth at his obvious insult of the female gender, clearly unimpressed. She probably would have continued to pester the cub even if he'd ignored her. She probably would have still continued if insulted her person. But the one thing she would not tolerate was rudeness towards her mother, especially coming from a male. He even had the guts to call females stupid! He was really asking for it!
Managing to hold onto her temper enough to reply with her words rather than her claws, the brown lioness snorted. "I should have known she wouldn't teach you! Obviously she knows no potential for anything when she sees it!"

Mtembei made a face. Another thing he hated about girls was how they talked in circles. What was she even going on about? "Should've known? You've known me for... for two minutes!" Or something like that. It wasn't like he'd been counting. "And what are you talking about, 'potential'?"

"Yeah well you're a boy, aren't you? Boys are all the same. I only need to know you for two minutes to know you're predictable!" Nsundu shot back, not willing to back down from Mtembei's retorts. There was no way she was going to lose an argument to a cub who was not only younger than her but a male.
The moment Mtembei asked about potential Nsundu's snarl became a sneer. In her mind, she now had the upper hand, obviously being the more intelligent of the two. Mtembei didn't even know what potential was! Now that was sad, even by male standards. "Potential. You know, your ability to become something worthwhile. "Let that sink into his thick skull."And you, tiny, don't have any."

What?! Ugh!
"Girls are all the ones who are all the same!" he hissed back. "You're ALL annoying and can't mind your own business!" He had proof! She had come over here just to bother him! He knew it!
"I have more po-ten-tial in the tuff of fur on my tail than you do in your whole, stupid girl body, including your stupid girl brain! Not that it's saying much with how little girls brains are."
Oh, yes, Leboya would swat him good if she heard this. Don't look. Don't look.

The annoying part she could take, but mind her own business?! All Nsundu had done was come and try and be friendly with him and he said she couldn't mind her own business?! The brat! It wasn't her fault that he had a problem with girls. She would have been decently civil with him if he hadn't ignored her! (Well, not really, but she'd like to pretend she'd be civil with him.)
And what was this about potential? The cub barely knew what it meant and now he was claiming that he had more of it? Nsundu snarled at him, tail lashing angrily. She would love to take a swipe at him. His mummy wasn't here and nobody would be able to protect him. It was just him, her, and her nicely sharpened claws. One more comment, cub, one more...
Did he just call her stupid?
"You are DEAD, tiny!"
Nsundu lunged forward, paws outstretched in an attempt to claw the first part of Mtembei's body she could get. "We'll see how much potential you have when I tear that tuft off your tail!"
