Helaku had believed, once, that his pain was over. That his paradise had been found, and for a time, it had been. Everything had been wonderful...until it had all come crashing down around him. Olathe had left him just like every other mare before. Let him believe his heart was safe, earned his trust, and then torn him apart. "Deceitful she-wolf," he spat to himself. "And the more fool I for believing her." They were all alike. They all caused pain, pain that made him wish he could do something, anything to make it stop. If it weren't for Mai and his offspring, he might have contemplated something drastic. But, alas, he must do his best to push through the pain.

So her great adventure had begun! The young mare had been traveling for a couple days. Her eyes were a-sparkle with enthusiasm, and her step was light with good-humor. In fact, she began to hum a sprightly tune that matched her footfalls.

It really wasn't very long after that before her steps were no longer that of a simple trot, but had added flairs and well timed hesitations to the same rhythm as her improvised song. With the sun shining brightly overhead, her hooves treading an intricate dance on the warm earth, and a sweet breeze stirring her draping forelock, her whole world was her dance.

Consequently she didn't notice the grey stallion. She didn't notice his surly, bitter attitude. She didn't notice the aura he gave off of wanting to be left alone. In fact, she didn't even notice that she was headed straight for him. She had only eyes for the ground directly before her (which prevented a misstep), ears only for her own humming, and thoughts only of the moment of utter perfection.

Unfortunately, her long, strong legs carried her very swiftly indeed straight into the stallion.

Helaku's ears laid back at the sound of approaching hoofbeats, and flattened still more at the sound of cheerful humming. How could anyone be happy at a time when it seemed everything should be colorless and drab? Olathe had claimed he neglected her...but he had always been there...she had always known where to find him. His thoughts distracted him, masking the fact that the hoofbeats were coming ever closer. The stallion's head jerked up with a sharp squeal upon collision, and he shied back with a loud snort to see who had run into him.

A mare. His ears pinned. Why couldn't that kind just leave him be?

A sharp squeal shattered her inner pace like a rock on a skin of ice. She gave her own startled snort just before barreling into the other soquili. She staggered to the side, her long legs tangling with themselves in a most ungraceful manner. As she struggled to regain her balance, her mane fell into her eyes, obscuring her vision.

With a final harumph at herself, she stood stead on all four hooves. She blew through her nostrils in a sigh before shaking her brown locks out of her eyes and turning a sincere look of apology towards whomever she had rammed.

"I'm so very sorry," she offered immediately. "That's entirely my fault. I wasn't pay any attention." She moved forward to sniff solicitously at him, a gesture of being sure he was alright. "I hope you aren't hurt?"

A long snort ratted through Helaku's nostrils as he simply glared at the mocha-and-chocolate mare for a moment. Once he might have thought her pretty...now, she was just another mare. "I'm fine," he finally said in a curt tone, tail flickering about his hindquarters. "Just pay attention next time." His true self was not completely gone...simply masked by pain and grief.

Zoet gave him a long, intent look. "Sounds to me like something internal was bruised," she commented in a brief flash of insight, though perhaps of the wrong sort. "I said I was sorry, and I meant it. I don't make it a habit of bumbling into random strangers after all." She took in his clear state of ire and tried to dampen her own rising irritation. "There is no need to be rude about it."

Of course her own ideas of rude might not be what others considered rude. For her, someone's tone could turn an innocent gathering of words into a high insult. She wasn't typically stung by such things, but to have her own genuine apology met with such cold fury bothered her. She fought the urge to frown, though the bright, shining light that normally lit her eyes from within had vanished. Her smile of contented pleasure in her dance was also irrevocably gone. She simply gazed at him intensely, trying to figure him out.

Perhaps he was part kalona?

"I'll start over for us then," she abruptly shifted gears. She cleared her throat, smoothed her expression, took a deep breath, and then took a step towards him, ears pricked in neutral greeting. "I'm sorry, I don't think I've met you before. I'm Zoet." She refrained from giving her nickname, since he didn't seem inclined to be the playfurl or affectionate sort. She would really expect him to sneer at the very idea. So she kept it simple and to the point. "It's nice to meet you. Who might you be?"

"Not because of you," was all Helaku would say on the topic. Her comment, innocently meant as it might be, had brushed a nerve. Though it might not be physical, there was an internal bruise indeed, the reason for his brusque actions. "Maybe not a need, but I don't see why not. Your kind has been a great deal more than just 'rude' to me." He lifted his head, golden eyes challenging her to deny his words. "Enough of that. I am Helaku."

Very much on her guard now, with his challenging attitude with a perfect stranger such a she, she flicked her tail and stomped a hoof. Her instincts told her that there was more to him than this cold, angry facade he was thrusting so defiantly at her. But her better sense told her to leave him to his misery and hatred. Her heart, though, was much softer than her common sense, and she couldn't help wishing she could ease some of the intense emotions that surely must be boiling beneath that hard surface.

"Well, I had thought we were the same kind, you and I, when I first saw you." Carefully meek, but no less sincere, she ducked her head. "I can see I was wrong, and that I've done you some unkindness without meaning to. I apologize, and hope you can forgive me for whatever it is I have done." She didn't THINK she'd done anything, but there was no sense fighting about it when he was already so worked up. Her gentle father had taught her that pride should always be set aside in such situations. A ding to one's pride was worth the soothing of a distressed heart.

Her forelock had fallen into her eyes again, but she didn't want to risk looking aggressive by tossing it out of her face. Instead, she peeked out at him from behind it, her head still lowered apologetically. "It really is nice to meet you, no matter the circumstance. I'll leave you be, if you would prefer."

What words Helaku might have said warred with a sudden surge of guilt. With a strangled, irritated growl, he shook his head at himself. Why the guilt? She's probably the same sort as she was. Pretending to be nice, just to get close. But something about her meekness held him back. Damn chivalry. "What do you want?" he managed to growl.

The tan and brown mare blinked at him in surprise. "I don't want anything. I was just taught to be polite." her brown eyes were wide through her obstructing forelock, which she now gently toseed to the side with a careful movement. "I'm sorry if I'm a bother with my manners. You have a nice day." She paused, weight shifted to take the first step away. She looked into his eyes again and added sincerely, "I hope your day gets better. Bad days are far from fun." With that, she bobbed her head pleasantly and nickered a soft farewell before turning to leave him alone.

She reminded herself that she had had such days herself before, when she'd rather bite someone's head off than find the good in them. She was sure she had been just as much a grouch and a bear as that stallion had been. Thinking thus, she was less inclined to see him in a bad light. It really wasn't fair, judging someone on a first meeting when their mood was so obviously already spoiled. Maybe another time, they could meet under better terms.

Lost in her thoughts, she ambled slowly off, her tail rhythmically swishing behind her in a slow and thoughtful way.

Helaku didn't know if he'd ever felt so conflicted in his life. The stallion that he normally was wanted to call out, to apologize, but something else told him not to, that she wasn't worth it. He lashed his tail and stomped hard into the earth below. He wasn't up to this yet, he knew it. But the least he could do was try to apologize.

"I'm...sorry. Another time might...be better." The words felt both forced and sincere. Helaku hated this, hated feeling like he'd split in two somehow. He needed to fix it one way or another.

She paused, broken from her thoughts, and looked back at him when he spoke to her. She tipped her head slightly and visibly absorbed his words, as well as looking beyond his eyes, trying to sense what was going on there. It was definitely beyond her ken, but not beyond the understanding of her soft heart. She nodded slowly in agreement. "Alright then. Another time." She smiled at him then, the gentle genuine sort of smile that held reassurance as well as acceptance. "I wish I could help make it better now, but I think right now I'm part of the problem, somehow." Ah, another flash of baffling insight. How could she possibly be the problem when he didn't know her? With a mental shrug, she let the issue go. "Good luck to you, Helaku. May happiness find you once more, and soon." With a last bob of her head, the again turned, leaving the stallion to wrestle with his issues on his own.
