The heat beat down on the black cat’s ebony coat, but it was a feeling now accustomed to her skin. Their wanderings had brought them nearer to home then she’d ever imagined being so soon- if ever, but she tried to hide the bounce in her step as they walked. She had no intention on appearing grateful to be near home- but, family meant a lot to her. And the idea of showing her face around some familiar people excited her. What had changed since she’d been gone? Did they even think her still alive? A rather sly grin crossed her face, and her tail whipped. No would not be underestimated, that was for sure.
She was older now, nothing like the cub she’d been with big green eyes and thoughts of being a hero. The face she had now was sleek and narrow, with deep set serious eyes and a stiff expression. And the black cat was now aching to start putting plans in motion.
But where to start? Life in the rogue lands was quieter then she remembered from a child. She left Kidondo sleeping after their hunt and went for a stroll- judging the land around her and eating it up in careful detail. Couldn’t afford to get lost in this empty grassland, and her whiskers perked. She was not a lioness who believed in the gods. If they were real, she mocked their presence by her own atheism- and if they were not, then she doubted they cared. But she did believe that somehow, fate would guide Kidondo and her. She could feel it in her bones.
Bones. Her eyes flecked down, and she noted the decaying remains haphazard animals had thrown about the dead-land. Her ears pricked and jaw set- curious, perhaps to see who else might roam the endless sea of grass.

A bright red form stalked through the grass, her pelt not doing much to help her with the task at hand. Her stomach had growled at her earlier and, having nothing better to do, Rin had decided to do a little bit of hunting. She needed to sharpen her skills anyways. She was growing quickly and she knew that if she lazed about too much she would get fat.
Then what would Duzi think of her? The mere thought of him brought a small smile to her face. She had started out hating his guts and now she loved him endlessly. It was strange, but it worked. Now she was seeing him in secret, since she wasn't sure her father would approve. Duzi was a rogue, rugged and dirty. She knew her father would want better for her. But, in all reality, she felt that things couldn't get any better than Duzi.
But that wasn't the point of her striding through the grass. She was on a mission to quiet her stomach so that maybe she could get in a good nap. Heh, so much for not being lazy.
Senses sharp and alert, she tried to locate any signs of prey about the place. But it seemed that the outskirts of the Kusini pride didn't hold much. She folded her ears back in irritation and let out a loud breath, making the tuft of fur atop her head float up for a second before drifting down over her eyes. The female shook her head so that she could see again and flicked her tail.
If there was no food, what was she to do? The sun beat down on her as the minutes passed. Standing in one place, she felt the full heat of the sun upon her back. Her fur itched and she growled. She'd have to find some place with shade or a pool of water to cool down in. Changing her direction, she headed towards the nearest watering hole that she could remember in the area. The grasses parted as she made her way, but as the minutes passed she began to think she was lost.
Normally she would have found water by now. Had she gone the wrong way? Bah, never could she get her directions mixed up! But perhaps...
Looking around, the red lioness spotted a figure moving in the distance. It was a little hard to tell, but she was sure it was another lion. An intruder? Rin's ears flattened as she quickly padded towards the other. It probably wasn't the best of ideas, being as she was still rather small and there was no telling what sort of being she would run into. But she never really was one to think about defending her home. It was simply natural.
Besides, she was powerful even with her small size and young age. She'd at least be able to put up some sort of fight before going down.
"Hey!" she called, growing closer towards the black figure. "You're getting close to Kusini lands. Are you intentionally trespassing or are you just lost?"

The voice from the grass brought a withdraw from the black creature. Her face grew still and she shifted her sleek neck- as if for a moment she was either unsure of where it was coming from, or unsure if she was insulted or not. But it slowly pooled off of her just as fast- and a smile crossed her face. It was a mischievous one, even when she didn’t want it to be. Yet, her ears flattened kindly so to not misdirect her intentions. Just a kid- although she didn’t yet see the full form of the girl yet.
“No intention on mine, but not lost either.” She spoke smoothly. “Is there a third option? Or do I have to pick from the two?” She began to be able to see the girl through the grasses as she stalked forward, and a peculiar perk caught her ear. It looked half like one of Kidondo’s brethren had gotten herself lost- but faintly, she did recall some of the Kusini pride being red. Weren’t they related to what’s her name? Her face frowned, and she was slightly troubled she couldn’t remember. If she crossed paths with her mother, she would make sure to politely mention it.
"Just like me to be in trouble already." She grinned.
But maybe she was being too coy. Her eyes rolled and she dropped the cool look, sitting down and looking to draw the girl out. “Nevermind me. Don’t worry, you’ve defended your lands. I’ll not walk further.” She smiled. "I seem to have forgotten how close the prides were here..." She studied for a moment. How close was the Kusini? Surely not far from the pridelands. Now she'd really have to watch where she stood.

Normally Rin wouldn't drop the subject of intrusion until said intruder was gone and done from her uncle's pride. But ever since she had met Duzi she had learned that first impressions weren't always correct. She couldn't go about assuming things about everyone right off the bat, otherwise she'd find herself with a lot more enemies than was wise. So she loosened up when she wasn't greeted hostily by the stranger.
"There could be a third option, I suppose. Have you an idea of what it might be?" she asked, trying to find out the other's intentions without being too blunt or rude about it. But of course, if she found nothing out she wouldn't be too disappointed. As long as those intentions didn't involve harming the Kusini pride in any way. There'd be serious trouble if this lioness decided to start something.
But, looking over the graceful form of the other female, Rin didn't think she'd try to do anything funny. There was no sound reason behind it, it was simply a feeling that she had. And she trusted her feelings.
Her ears perked slightly as she heard No mention something about being in trouble already. This brought a slight grin to her face. "You're not in trouble. Unless, of course, you try to get into the pride forcefully with bad intentions on your mind." Her claws flexed through the dirt as she padded forward, finally coming within feet of the other. She stopped then, respectful but still a bit on the defensive. She didn't think No would try anything, but she had learned to never let her guard down so easily. She'd been tricked before, and her pride wouldn't allow a second occurance.
The royal lioness lifted her head slightly at the words of the other. "Forgotten? Does that mean you are from around here?" If that was the case, then Rin had nothing to worry about, she hoped. All of the nearby prides were at peace with the Kusini the last time she had checked. And if this lioness was from one of those prides then there was a great chance she had no hard feelings against the Kusini.
At least she hoped.

No grinned and shook her head, her dull eyes briefly flashing with a curious glint. “I’ll buy complacent walking for the third option. I can’t say I’m really being all that productive.” Her voice purred. “I've got no buisness here. Sometimes my feet start walking and I let them go.” She admitted. “But, you don't look like you've been waiting to bust me all day. I suspect you know the feeling?” She quirked, not too afraid to throw out some questions of her own. The other female had seemed winded when she'd come across her- had she been out in roguelands herself? She smelled of someone else...
A smile, but it was more reserved. “I’m from the pridelands. A while ago." Did they think about her? "Wonder if they they think me dead..." She trailed off. It was an odd place to laugh, but she cooly did anyways. "But, that's what happens when you do too much walking. You get yourself into things. Better if you stay home, unless you're out looking for them." She commented.
As she smiled, she couldn't help but note the female again. She would have to try to stall her so Kidondo could see! Surely, if there were kids as red as that one, the firekin could be satiated. Stick her in the pride, and they wouldn't know the difference.
If she was tough enough. But No was certain that any rogue entering the group was sure to be as touch as nails as far as she was concerned. It would be a nice boost of confidence to meet more people like that. People clearily worthy of surving in the desert and matching firekin traditions.
"Kusini..." She trailed off, her jaw shifting. "I'm No. And, trouble? I'm a bit of bad luck." She smoothed with a kind of cheshire like look- as if the idea of it was exciting to her. "It finds me, now and then. And you?"

Rin sat back upon her bottom and tossed her head slightly. She scoffed and grinned at the other. "Just because I seem like I haven't been waiting for something it means that I wander?" She paused for a moment. She supposed that was true. No was correct after all, being as the red lioness wasn't exactly the epitome of being productive. But she didn't need to know that.
"I've been looking for food. Call it wandering if you like, since I haven't found anything yet. But I like to think it's got some purpose." That was all half-true of course. She had been looking for food, but only within the last thiry minutes. And the day wasn't so young anymore.
At the mention of the pridelands, the younger female's ears perked slightly. This lioness was from the pridelands? She hadn't heard of her before, but then again she didn't stay up to date with the going-ons of the pridelands either. She was a descendent of the king, or former king thereof, but she lived in the Kusini pride. It was rather hard to keep up with things when you weren't all in among them.
"The pridelands, eh?" she asked, rising to her paws. She flexed her claws again, the arrogance in her wanting to show off. "You've lived under my grandfather then? It's sad to hear what happened to him." She trailed off, feeling a sad feeling come over her. She had never spent time with her grandfather but she still felt sorrow for him all the same. The way he had died...
She dug her claws into the ground and bristled slightly. If only she could have avenged him. But it was too late now. She whipped her tail as she realized that there was nothing for her to do.
She cleared her throat, getting over her emotions. She hated sadness or sorrow of any kind. It was such a useless feeling to her. "No?" she echoed, ears twitching. "That's an odd name. But a name nonetheless, I guess. I'm Rin."
At the mention that No was a bit of bad luck, she laughed slightly. "Stay away from me then. I've got something good going right now that I don't want screwed up." When asked if she was from around here, she silenced for a moment or two. Finally she nodded. "I live in the Kusini pride. My uncle is the king there." She glanced off into space as she thought about Duzi. He was a rogue, living on the outskirts of the pride. She visited him often and there were times where she was gone for a day or two at once. She was wondering if it was even correct anymore to say that she belonged to the Kusini'Mwezi pride.
But whatever she would be considered--rogue or a member of a pride--she still had Duzi. And that was all that mattered to her.

“No, no.” The black cat dismissed. “I don’t mean that.” What did she mean? Her ear pivoted carefully. “I just recognize the look. In the eyes. You don’t look like someone who sits around and waits for someone all day just to prove their worth as a sentry. That’s all I mean.” The lioness added coolly- but the female’s next comment dropped the expression from her face, and her ears folded.
“Oh…!” She breathed. “I’m…very sorry. I was just a kid when it happened…” Her eyes lowered, and she shook her head. “I remember that night. I don’t think I’d ever seen it darker. My sister was…well, I don’t know. I suppose we all suffered a loss. I knew I’d never stay in the pridelands… but Mufasa was a good king. A very good king…” Her family owed their sister and daughter’s life to him, didn’t they? “My family owes a great debt to yours. Whether you know it or not.”
Her head bobbed in approval as she scowled at the horizon. “Mufasa set the bar for how things are run. I think there is a lot to be learned from him. Hopefully, I can use a bit of it in my own dealings. My king, Kidondo and I- we’re out to look for that sort of ideal. That someone can use power from around him and surround himself with it. Look at the pridelands, and how big they are! Not that there aren’t problems. But who’s ideal is higher then what Mufasa made? Who can say, 'I want none of it!' Anyone would die for that kind of legacy.”
She gave a rather swauve bow of her head. “It’s good to meet one of his! I’m sure a bit of him floats around in you.”
But! Her name. That, got the grin back. “No? I like my name. Silly name, but I don’t think it’s ever been forgotten. I aim not to be forgotten.”

Rin grinned softly to herself as the other lioness seemed to tread carefully until she could cover herself up. She enjoyed keeping others on their toes. She supposed she got that from Duzi. He was always keeping her on her toes, doing such unexpected things and testing her randomly. It was all rather annoying but she loved him.
"Damn right I don't," she spoke proudly. "I work on my own terms." For the most part. The only time when she would put something else above her was if her pride was in danger or if something happened to Duzi. But both were rather unlikely events and so she did things on her own time--things she wanted to do when she wanted to do them.
As No apologized and showed sorrow for the loss of her grandfather, she growled quietly and shook her head. "Don't be sorry for anything. It's not like you killed him." It was in the past and a rather sore spot that she hadn't quite figured out yet. It wasn't something she wanted to talk about openly. But then, hadn't she been the one to mention it? She was careless sometimes.
She shook her slender head and flicked her tail. "What's a debt to me anyways?" she murmured. "I've no reason to make anyone pay." It sure as hell wouldn't bring her grandfather back.
The black lioness continued speaking on about Mufasa but Rin simply tuned her out. It was her way of doing things. Any time there was some emotioal strife or conflict, she shut it out. And now, with the subject of her grandfather vivid in their conversation, she felt herself wondering about things she'd never wondered about before. She had never felt any real loss before, but for some reason she felt a pang of pain now.
But she managed to catch the words when No spoke of her king. Kidondo? She'd never heard of him before, but then again she wasn't such a social butterfly. There were plenty of things she didn't know about other areas. "What for?" she asked, curious about this king. Obviously he wasn't a king in this general vicinity, yet if No was about and if she spoke like her and the king were closer than normal, there had to be a reason behind her coming out this way.
Blue eyes narrowed as No mentioned that anyone would die for a legacy such as her grandfather's. "And my grandfather did die for his legacy," she spoke sourly. "But I don't see the point in dying for something if you're just going to be dead anyways. Can't enjoy things when you're dead."
"Heh, sure there is," she continued, tossing her head slightly. "He's in me, but what parts?" she asked, not expecting an answer. She felt her and her grandfather were so far apart. How could she be compared to him? What had she done in her lifetime?
"Well if you aim not to be forgotten, what do aim to be remembered for?"

Kidondo was more tired than he had been in his life and he had slept well. He had needed the rest, needed the boost to his energy and now as he woke and stretched the sleep from his limbs he felt himself again. He yawned, his tongue curling and fangs flashing in the sun. He was glad of the soothing hear, glad of its power as it struck the ground and warmed his fur, it reminded him of the home he had lost and loved so dearly. The home he would oneday regain.
Then after a moment he realised somethign was out of place. No was gone. His heart gave a worried jolt and he was on his feet in a moment, glancing out across the land. Where could she have gone to? His worry soon eased, however, for only after a few moments of searching he heard voices carried on the wind.
No's voice.
He felt his heart warm at the sound of her voice and though he was not yet close enough to distinguish words very well. He paused when they came into view, his eyes meeting that of a young lioness. Her fur was one of the most brilliant shades he had ever seen and his gaze flicked between No and the stranger. Should he go up to them or should he stay behind? He didn't want to risk anything.
Then he caught Rin's last words and his ears perked up. He didn't approach or speak yet but if the females glanced his way they would see him standing there.

No was quiet for a moment. She knew, if only partially, what her family owed. She remembered that night- her mother coming home with Xu in her mouth and quickly giving over the rest of her cubs to their aunt, Tai. How people had whispered. How Xu had been so quiet. She remembered going with her aunt and her brother to the meeting with the adults- although they were not the only cubs so bold. And she listened, and learned news of the great king’s death. She’d never truly asked what happened that night. But she wasn’t a fool. She could feel it in her chest. “He saved my sister from the lion that killed him. I do not know if that’s what cost him his life. But, even if it was only a distraction…we still owed him a lot. I can’t say I’ve made much good on it. Maybe he’d understand what I’m doing.” She mused quietly, but like Rin, was not too keen on staying on the subject.
It reminded her too keenly of mortality, and just what the life of kings could often be. But with that said- she did not think Mufasa died in regret. Her idealized version of him, at least.
Out of the corner of her eyes, she caught the sight of Kidondo approaching. But no- not just the sight. A part of her could feel him coming, and she liked that, whether it was a real feeling or just the workings of her imagination. She was glad she’d stalled long enough- this was just the kind of thing that would do Kidondo some good. “Kidondo,” She spoke, only carefully turning an eye to him, and gesturing with her head to the girl. “The granddaughter of King Mufasa.” She introduced.
And then she picked back up, a bit lighter now. “I don’t think a life is good served doing nothing. I left the pridelands because I knew I had to do something. I couldn’t stand the idea of getting old and having babies. And that’s all I would be remembered for: Good old No, she had babies and was a good lioness. She lived in an ideal world, and did not have to fight for anything.”
Her head shook. “There are other prides out there where things aren’t so easy.”
She turned more cordially towards Kidondo, and looking back at Rin. “This is Kidondo- king of the Firekin, whether they’re willing or not.” A grin crossed her face as she concluded. "And we're aiming to do something. That's what we'll be remembered for."

Rin listened quietly as the other explained that Mufasa had saved her sibling from a killer lion. Sacrifice. He had saved a girl only to have his life taken from him. No had spoke that she wasn't sure him saving her sister had cost him his life, but if that hadn't then what had? Certainly there wasn't more than one vicious lion out there looking to kill a famous king.
"If my grandfather were truly great he wouldn't ask for something in return," she murmured. And she knew that it was that way. She had heard of the greatness of her grandfather, of how caring and loving he was towards all that lived under him. She felt that he would have willingly given his life up for any of his pride members if it meant they would have a chance at life.
The wind shifted and a new scent was brought to her. Inforcements? She tensed up and the fur along her back bristled slightly as she turned to glance at the newcomer. But as No spoke his name, she relaxed somewhat. This was her king. He was large and very regal looking, demanding respect from everyone around him. There was a sort of power about him that she'd never before witnessed, and it awed her slightly. But she was also stubborn and so she didn't flinch as he entered the scene.
When she was introduced as King Mufasa's granddaughter, her head lifted ever so slightly. She was just as royal as he was. The only difference between them was that he held a royal position and possessed royal blood. She only had the latter.
"I agree," she huffed. "It's too simple to stay at home and nurse babies as all the other females do. That's why I patrol the borders. I've got no other place to go so I defend my pride while the other females stay at their dens and suckle little cubs. Fighting and defending is what I live for," she spoke, her voice growing soft. That was how she had met the love of her life, Duzi. She had been defending her pride against his 'invasion' and in the process she had developed feelings for him.
At the mention that other prides didn't have things so easy, she simply shrugged. "It's not like things can't be changed. If things are sour then it's their own fault. Fight for what you want, don't just let things pass by without so much as an acknowledging glance."
"Firekin, eh?" she spoke, flicking her round ears. When she had first met Duzi, he had mistaken her for a Firekin. It was interesting finally meeting one.
"What is this something you're aiming to do?" she pried, no longer caring if she was blunt. Besides, No had tangled that bait right in front of her. She couldn't be expected to just sit back and watch it from afar. She wanted to know what it was.

Now that he had been acknowledged the firekin prince slipped closer towards them, moving to sit beside No, though positioned slightly behind her. This was No's conversation and for now he would be content to listen in. Besides he was still riddled with sleep and he wasn't sure whether he was of th emindset to give a decent response. The conversation actually interested him. This pair of lionesses weren't to find happiness in a family? So many of the females in his pride had given upp their warrior ways for family. Strange how it seemed that complete strangers were more Firekin than the purebloods were. He was in good company here.
It was then that he decided to speak.
"You speak truths." Kidondo replied, shaking his mane to rid his eyes of its presence. "But change is something Firekin aren't particularly fond of. They banish their own kind for thinking outside of their comfy little traditions." He was still bitter about that, but the guilt of disobeying his father worried him more. The day when they clashed in battle was ever growing nearer and he feared that day more than any other.
He curled his tail lazily, waiting for No to respond to the other question. He wouldn't butt in when No was obviously building up to it. Besides when it came to words No was far more tactful than him. He glanced at the black feline and there was pride in his eyes.

No quieted as Kidondo spoke, her eyes attempting to smoothly transition from Rin to him, and back to Rin without looking eager. She was working on being tactful- but tactful or not, she was very genuinely intrigued by this girl. A daughter of Mufasa- whom reminded her of herself a bit. She could trust a person like that. And she looked more firekin then some of the blood… “Some people are afraid of change, because old ways are so rooted into them. The firekin are suffering from it.” She commented after he’d spoken. “They’re still living in a post-plague world- they’ve gotten lazy from slave labor, and timid of outsiders and anything passed the desert. Meanwhile- you’ve seen how our lands have progressed these years. It will kill them, if something it’s not done.” “They’re a good people. It’s a place to be proud of- to die for even. And what they stand for- or at least, what they did a long time ago. And there are many looking for a change. But we can’t change anything without support; which is what Kidondo and I are doing. We're building a bit of an army, you might say. We will show the firekin that rogues and deserters have become more worthy of their title- and show them a path back to being great.”
Her eyes lowered, and the end of her tail swayed. "But...it will be a hard fought battle. Doing so pits us up against the King; who calls us traitors but blindly leads his people to destruction."
"We can make something back from it, I am sure. Build the desert back up into a place that can be the one to be admired- not the one to be looked down upon for exteremist thought and it's own demise."

As the large male spoke up, Rin turned her attention to him for a moment. She noticed how regal looking he was. He certaintly seemed to earn the title of a royal; it didn't seem like he abused his position and that earned him a few points. At the mention that the Firekin kicked out their own simply because they might have thought a little differently sometimes, she fluffed up and hissed slightly.
"Fools!" she cried, but then she recovered herself. It just pissed her off when lions acted so stupidly like that. They seemed so secure and confident in their ways that they couldn't see it was only hurting them. Shaking her head, she sighed. "Adaptation is how we live. It's sad that they can't see that. No offense," she added on the end, flicking an ear towards Kidondo. But she did truly feel they were stupid for killing themselves simply because they didn't want to change.
"Change is inevitable," she huffed, looking back towards No. This really bothered her, the fact that the Firekin were so arrogant as to not see the error of their ways. But who was she to show them otherwise? "They either change or die. I don't think there's much of an excuse for something like this."
But--she had heard of the greatness of the Firekin pride. It had once been something to seriously fear. Now? It seemed it was nothing but a small kit among all the adults that were the other prides. It was a good thing they were doing, No and Kidondo. They said they wanted to change the Firekin pride and make it great as it once had been. Rin suddenly felt as if she were bashing the pride too much.
"I'm sorry," she began to apologize. "My feelings are too strong sometimes." But she was learning to deal with that. Duzi was teaching her how to control her feelings, but there were times where she simply let herself go.
Thinking, she began to see what No and Kidondo were doing. Not in the Firekin, but right there in front of her. They were telling her all of this for a reason. "Are you trying to get me to join you?" she questioned, smiling slightly. It was a chance for adventures, battles, and a chance for her to actually do something with herself rather than sitting around the Kusini patrolling the borders that were never invaded. It would be interesting, and she wondered if Duzi would go with her if she decided to follow these two.
"If you are, I think I'd very much lend my aid to you. I'm a little small, but I'm still growing and I like to think I've got sharper claws than some." Not that she was bragging or anything. "Besides, I'm tired of sitting around and doing nothing."

Kidondo had never really acted kingly. Yes, he hadn't been a childish creature. He had been mature pretty much from the outlook, but who wouldn't be? Growing up alongside his father, learning all he needed to, it was enough to make anyone grow up before their time. As a cub he had adored his father but then he began to hear things and learn things, mainly due to Nuri, and soon he found himself changing inside. Soon the ways of the Firekin seemed wrong. He had never really wanted to be a King, never really wanted to have such responsibility. He just wanted to be himself! But now, sitting beside No, facing this rogue who looked more of a Firekin than most, he realised now that this was his destiny. He had been born to save his kind and No had been born to aid him in that.
Perhaps this strangely coloured female had been born to help him too.
"No offence taken. I'm one of the banished lions. We're of the same mind I see. Change is only natural. Clinging to threads of the past will only drag a lion down." He replied. His heart had sweeled with affection towards No as she spoke of the desert. It was as if she had always been there, made to walk it's treacherous grounds. He wanted to tell her, right then, how wonderful she was but decided that now wasn't really the time.
He started at her sudden exclamation and turned to No with a look that said; 'she's perfect right?' He couldn't help but smile at the young one's words. She was so keen to do something that would get her away from the normality of everyday life. He supposed he was the same. No too.
His tail flicked.
"You definately have the spirit for it." He replied, allowing No to give the final judgement. She had initiated the conversation after all and in his mind, he had already decided this young one was perfect.
Seemed someone was on their side.
