Specializing in various talents of singing, dance, hosting, and acting, they have achieved outstanding success in South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and other East Asian countries. The group initially debuted with twelve members on November 6, 2005 with their first promoted single, "TWINS (Knock Out)". The original twelve members, in age order (from oldest to youngest), are Leeteuk (the leader), Heechul, Han Geng, Yesung, Kang-In, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kibum.
By the time of their debut, eleven of the members were Korean and one was Chinese. The Chinese member, Han Geng, was picked among from 3000 applicants through auditions held in China by SM Entertainment in 2001. Many of the members had already made a name for themselves prior to Super Junior's debut through acting, VJ-ing, and modeling. On May 23, 2006 SM Entertainment announced the addition of a new member, Kyuhyun, making them the thirteen member group they are today.

Pre - debut
Before their official debut, Super Junior was already a hot topic over the Internet. News broke about SM Entertainment's unprecedented plans of forming a large twelve member group. Rumors about the identity of the members as well as the group's name circulated for months. For awhile, many speculated that they were going to be known as Common Ground. Another speculations claimed that the band was going to be called O.V.E.R (Obey the Voice for Each Rhythm).
Prior to their debut, most members were, and still are, actors, MCs, models, or DJs. Some of the members still continue to do so today, such as Heechul, Siwon, and Kibum who are active in dramas and film. Leeteuk, Yesung, Kang-In, Sungmin, and Eunhyuk are still active DJs.
Super Junior made their pre-debut appearance on M.NET on October 2005.[a] At the showcase, Super Junior performed various styles of hip hop dancing.The group danced in a way where it seems as if they were battling with each other. Three of the best dancers in the group, Han Geng, Eunhyuk, and Donghae, also performed a separate dance away from the group.[c] After the performances, a debut expected from the group became more highly anticipated.
Debut
Super Junior made their debut television appearance as a group on SBS Inkigayo on November 6, 2005 as a twelve member group. The group performed their first promotional single, "TWINS (Knock Out)." A digital single with "TWINS (Knock Out)", "You are the one", and three more different tracks were released online on November 8, 2005. A CD single was scheduled to be released in November but a more complete album, Super Junior 05[d], was released on December 7, 2005 instead. Their debut album was a magnificent success, selling pass 73,000 units.[e]
An official fanclub was created for the group, called E.L.F. (Ever Lasting Friends). Since Korean fans tend to support their idols with a certain balloon color, Super Junior's official color became sapphire blue.
To further publicize the new group, in December 2005, Super Junior collaborated with label mate and popular boy band TVXQ. Together they released a single titled "Show Me Your Love". During this time, the two groups could be seen on the same shows together to promote their single.
In the new year, after "Show Me Your Love" performances were finished, Super Junior moved onto their second promoted single, "Miracle". The single version of the song differs from the original, as it has a dance break and an added bridge. In contrast to the edgy, rock-influenced feel of "TWINS (Knock Out)", "Miracle" was a light bubblegum pop love song with light-hearted dance choreography. It was the second and last song to be promoted from their studio album.
Promotional image for the album UOn May 23, 2006 SM Entertainment announced the addition of a new member, Kyuhyun, being the youngest member. The new thirteen membered group polished their newer and more mature look and released their newest single "U" online for free download on May 25, 2006. "U" exceeded 1,700,000 downloads. The title song became a success and enjoyed the #1 spot for several weeks on music programs for the first time in the group's career. Followed, soon thereafter, by the release of "Endless Moment" on May 29, 2006 and "Lovely Day" on June 6, 2006.
When promotions barely started for their newest single, "U", on July 23, 2006, a new single was released. Super Junior had been frequently appearing in various musical and variety programs to promote their new singles thereafter. Because their single "Dancing Out" was a summer single, they had their "Goodbye Special" (performing their last singles "U" and "Dancing Out" for the last time) on SBS Inkigayo on September 3, 2006.[1][f]
Aside from music programs, they could be also seen in dramas. In Super Junior's Mini-Drama (대결! 슈퍼주니어의 자작극), Super Junior wrote, produced, and acted in the drama. The subject matters of the drama were the top three choices from the viewers.[2][3] The mini-series soon became popular among fans. Super Junior have also participated in 슈퍼주니어쇼 Super Junior Show (슈주쇼 Suju Show), (2005-2006), Mystery 6, 슈퍼주니어 풀하우스 (Super Junior Full House) 2006, 미소년 합숙 대소동 (Super Adonis Camp) (2006). Their busy schedule was briefly interrupted when Heechul fractured his femur in a car accident, but the group managed to restart fairly quickly.
Super Junior has yet to release their second full-length album, which is currently slated for a late 2007 release.
Overseas Expansion
Since Super Junior's debut in South Korea, other countries of Eastern Asia are taking an interest in this large thirteen member boy band, especially China and Thailand. Although Super Junior has yet to make an Asian concert tour, there has been speculation where Super Junior will target the overseas markets and hold major concerts in 2008.
Popularity in Thailand
Super Junior made their first overseas performance in Thailand on March 9, 2006 at a music ceremony.[4] After the appearance, Super Junior's popularity immediately rose in Thailand and their new single with TVXQ also made it to #8 in Thailand's "Channel V" music chart. Siwon was also chosen to be the endorser of 12 Plus, and filmed several comercials in Thailand. During Super Junior's performance at the Academy Fantasia in Thailand on July 14, 2007, several hundred Thai fans were crowded around the stage to watch the group perform. Some fans even fainted due to excessive heat and limited space while many were injured due to the heavy amount of shoving and pushing.
Expansion to the Chinese market
Along with performances of Kangta & Vanness, Super Junior made their debut performance as a group in China on June 12, 2006, performing their hit singles "U" and "Miracle". After the performance in Qingdao, Super Junior became the most frequently reported Korean artist from the Chinese media.[5]
Prior to the group's Qingdao performance, on April 2006, Super Junior's only Chinese member, Han Geng, visited China for the first time since his debut to promote Super Junior. Although the rest of Super Junior did not accompany him, Han Geng's first arrival to China created some chaos at the airport for over fifty fans welcomed him.[6] Primarily being unfamiliar to the Chinese market, Super Junior's popularity in China had shocked the Chinese and Korean media. Since then thereafter, Han Geng and the rest of Super Junior gave continuous visits to China. On June 2006, Super Junior made their first visit to China as a group. The group has made a total of over eight visits to the country since April 2006. The amount of fans that welcome Super Junior at the airport increase within each visit. In Han Geng's recent visit to China on mid-July 2007, close to three hundred fans welcomed him at the airport. [7] Some fans even rented rooms around his hotel room. [8] After filming the Chinese film A Battle of Wits, Super Junior's other member Siwon made frequent visits to China to promote the film. Along with the rest of the cast of the film, Siwon toured four cities in China, the stops including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Si Won's popularity even exceeds that of Andy Lau at some of the tour stops. On August 8, 2007, Han Geng and Siwon visited China again and traveled to Changsha to participate in a variety show that was suppose to be held earlier on April but was postponed because of the car accident. Over 7,000 fans were at the airport to welcome the two.[9]
On July 18, 2007, Super Junior arrived in Shanghai to attend a 2007 CY event. Due to previous chaos and confusion caused by the huge amount of Chinese fans at the airport, and also because of a tight schedule, the organizers for Super Junior decided to lead the group to exit the airport through the VIP section instead of meeting the fans through the main entrance.[10] The fans had no choice but to leave the airport without meeting Super Junior.
Due to continuous visits to China, sources say that the group has serious intentions to target the Chinese market, with a Chinese version of "U" released in the Chinese editions of their successful single, U, on June 15, 2007. It is also said that the group will record as well as perform more Chinese singles in the future. Sources say that Super Junior will hopefully hold their own concert in China by 2008.[11]
Super Junior made their first visit to Taiwan on June 16, 2007 as guest performers and award announcers at the prestigious Golden Melody Awards, also known as the Taiwanese version of the Grammys. Super Junior announced the Best Vocal Group and Best Performance Album awards.[12]. They also performed the songs "U" and "Miracle" at the awards ceremony. The group also broke a record at the ceremony, having the most amount of people to announce the awards.[13]
Super Junior was termed as "The Most Popular Group" in various Chinese news articles after walking the red carpet at the Golden Melody Awards.[14] It is said that their popularity at the ceremony even exceeds Taiwan's own artists. Over half of the fans present at the red carpet event were fans of Super Junior and over one hundred and fifty reporters rushed to the group to interview them.
The April 18th Car Accident
On April 18, 2007 after coming home from a Kiss the Radio program, four members of Super Junior, Leeteuk, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Kyuhyun, and two managers were involved in a car accident when the driver of the vehicle believed that one of the tires was deflated and attempted to change lanes, but lost control of the car. The van ran into the guard rail/medium on the driver's side and skidded for about 30M+. At some point, the momentum caused the van to flip over on its right side.
Kyuhyun was sitting behind the driver's seat, therefore he was the most injured out of all the members. He had a fractured hip, broken ribs, and facial scratches/bruises. The fractured hip was bleeding and his broken ribs had come down on his lungs. He was slipping in and out of consciousness, and couldn't really speak because of the shock. Kyuhyun was discharged on July 5, 2007 after 78 days.
Shindong was the least injured out of the members, and managed to leave the accident with just cuts and bruises on his face and body.
While Leeteuk had an operation regarding glass shards that were in his back, the operation was successful in removing them all. He also had a scratch near his eye and various cuts and bruises. When they found out how serious his injuries were, they had a plastic surgeon stitch him up. He got a total of 170 stitches on his face and his back. They're trying to avoid leaving any scars, but Leeteuk might have to have more surgeries later on to remove scars.
Eunhyuk was also reported with having glass shards in his back, and was said to have stitches.
Regarding schedules, all activities involving these four members have been canceled.
Police reports said that the driver blamed the accident on a flat tire, but investigations showed that the tire was fine and in actuality the driver had been speeding.
Both Leeteuk and Kyuhyun recovered quicker than the doctor initially expected. Leeteuk was discharged from the hospital on April 30. 2007 (3 PM, Korean time) but did not resume his schedule until after 33 days of recovery. Kyuhyun's family and friends were shocked to find out that he is recovering so quickly that his doctor even stated that he would not require any new operations for the time being. And after 78 days since the accident, Kyuhyun has been discharged on July 5, 2007 but will not resume to his schedule for a few weeks.

Controversies
Fan suicides
After an amazing weight loss from 87 kg to 47 kg in merely three months, seventeen-year-old Lee Eun Ji granted the honor to appear on an episode of SBS's Star King, a popular Korean variety show. After the program aired, television-goers of Star King, along with netizens, began to criticize Lee's unhealthy way of dieting. Her classmates also begun to spread hateful rumors of her at school and she received many negative remarks over the internet, criticizing on her looks and weight loss. When a picture of Lee with a certain "S group member" surfaced on the web, Lee became a more popular topic of bashing online.[16] After it was proven that the certain S group member was actually Kang-In of Super Junior, members from the official Super Junior fanclub, E.L.F., began to bash her frequently. Die-hard fans found her cellphone number and bombarded her with many horrifying messages. There were also reports claiming that her schoolmates became less friendly to her after her picture with Kang-In surfaced on the web, along with the previous rumors spread by her classmates.
Due to severe trauma brought about by Super Junior fans, Lee commited suicide on June 5, 2007. On a note written to her parents the night before she took her life, she stated,
“ I’m sad to have been scolded. Father and mother, I’m sorry for having worried you. I’m sorry for having given you pain. ”

However, it is still disputed whether or not Lee's suicide was really because of the bashing by Super Junior fans, or because of post-weight loss depression. According to Lee’s mother, she scolded Lee the evening before her death for not eating to lose more weight.
Cyber attack
On July 30, 2007, during an episode of School of Rock, Super Junior leader Leeteuk had mentioned that famous Korean figure-skater Kim Yeon Ah refused his cyworld friend invitation. After the program was broadcasted, over 7,000 hate comments from Super Junior fans were posted on Kim's cyworld minihompy daily. Kim's fans also counter-attacked Leeteuk's cyworld. However, Kim publicly clarified that she has never refused such an invitation. Ultimately, Leeteuk had to post an official apology for the incident to have ever occurred. Leeteuk explained that he wanted to make an interesting topic for the television program and did not expect such a bad consequence. He apologized and promised to never invent a similar topic again.[18]
However, recent rumors support that the incident with Leeteuk lying on the program was part of the script set by M.NET, a music and television program in Korea where Super Junior continuously are guests for. It is said that Leeteuk was forced to say the scripted dialogue for the television program, which told him to say that Kim Yeon Ah refused his cyworld friend invitation.[19] However, this incident is still arguable to whether or not Leeteuk really lied about the case or if he was forced to.
On August 9, 2007, a hearing was held to discuss about Leeteuk's lying case. According to the various articles, the panel discussed that it is hard to know whether a guest on a show is telling the truth or not, since Leeteuk did not say it during a live broadcast. Since the show did not verify the story before it was aired, the show has to take responsibility for the incident to have occurred. A final decision will not be made until further discussion after August 21, 2007. However, the charges will not be pressed against Leeteuk.[20]

Musical style and ability
Being a large thirteen member boy band, the members contain a variety of different vocal ranges, therefore it is an advantage for the group to sing in different musical genres to target different audiences. Nonetheless, the group has managed their music to stay in mainstream K-pop.
Super Junior has released only one full-length studio album, and one CD single to date. Despite this, Super Junior is still frequently seen in joint albums and also branching out to different subgroups to participate in several drama soundtracks to prevent inactivity within members.
Each member has different to similar vocal ranges to complement each other when singing, especially in their fast dance tracks that requires various different techniques of harmonizing. Yesung, Kang-In, Siwon, and Kyuhyun are known for their deep baritone vocals. However, they are also known for their vocal belting techniques, notably Yesung and Kyuhyun. On the other hand, Heechul, Sungmin and Ryeowook are known for their higher, tenor voices while Leeteuk and Han Geng's vocals come between as a mid-high range. Most non-lyrical introductions or bridges are usually harmonized by Super Junior K.R.Y. They can also be seen singing short acapella cuts[g], and ultimately are acknowledged as the most talented vocalists in the group. Shindong, Eunhyuk and Kibum are the known rappers of the group due to their different vocal range. Donghae constantly raps as the back-up vocals.

Super Junior's debut single, "TWINS (Knock Out)" was a rock-influenced release, and also a cover of the British rock band, Triple 8. However, their follow-up single, "Miracle", was a bubblegum pop love song, a clear target for the younger audiences. The rest of the tracks in their first studio album, Super Junior 05, mainly consisted of pop love ballads and also R&B-influenced dance tracks with rap and fast drum beats.
Nonetheless, Super Junior's main focuses are still in their various dance tracks. Their first official and most successful single, "U", was a dance track, with the influence of rap. Their second heavily promoted single after the 2007 SMTOWN summer release, "Full of Happiness" (행복), was a bubblegum pop and dance song that was originally sung by H.O.T.
L Y R I C S
Super Junior does not write the lyrics for the majority of their songs. However, Heechul, Shindong, and Eunhyuk are sometimes credited for writing the rap lyrics in some of their tracks. The three were credited for writing the rap lyrics in their joint single with TVXQ, "Show Me Your Love". Eunhyuk was also the main contributor for the rap lyrics in the group's popular single, "U". Most of the rap contains simple meanings with English incorporated in the lyrics.
The main theme involved in most of Super Junior's songs are usually about situations that are related to love, or one's relationship and feelings towards the other. Soft ballads like "You are the one" and "So I" encourages a positive environment in one's love relationship. Fast tracks with light-hearted melodies like "Miracle (Super Junior song)" and "차근차근 (Way for love)" contains bubblegum pop lyrics with positive views of love and trust. However, fast dance tracks like "TWINS (Knock Out)", "OVER", "L.O.V.E", etc. usually gives in negative connotations about love and relationships. For example, in "OVER", the lyrics hovers around a confident persistence after a relationship breakup. "L.O.V.E" involves around a loss of hope and confidence after love was shattered. Likewise, Super Junior's debut track "TWINS (Knock Out)" revolves around love that was destroyed although the main theme is to encourage one to keep their dignity and courage instead.
However, most of Super Junior's recent productions deal with deeper topics instead of love. Although "Success", one of their most recent songs, subtly involves its topic around love and trust, the climax of the song deals with the power of determination and bravery. "Wonder Boy" involves self-determination and pride. The topic of "love" is not at all mentioned in the track.
T A L E N T S
As trainees under SM Entertainment, most of Super Junior knows how to play the piano. Some members also knows how to play the guitar, drums, and other known instruments. Although they are treated as vocalists, the majority of Super Junior were professionally trained around areas of dance. The majority of their choreographed dances involve various skills of hip hop dance and jazz dance, such as popping, waving, sliding, and locking. They are also seen performing breakdances and robot dances. Han Geng and Sungmin are sometimes seen performing their flexibility and gracefulness during their dances due to their knowledge of the martial arts. Ultimately, Han Geng, Eunhyuk, and Donghae are considered as the most talented dancers in the group because they are usually seen leading the dances and also dancing to solos. Shindong is also credited to be one of their choreographers for their various dance performances.
Super Junior has been criticized in the past for lip-synching and lack of vocal skills, specifically for shaky pitch and heavy breathing.[21][22] The criticisms worsened in July 2006 when they lipsynched on Show! Music Core (쇼! 음악중심) of MBC, a show that guarantees all live performance. While fans have defended them saying that [Kim Heechul|Heechul]] was ill, their critics argued that they shouldn't have to because they are a large thirteen member group. With Heechul being ill does not account for all thirteen members.[23] Despite this, they have still remained popular through their strong fan base and their album sales have been strong.
Criticisms slowly dropped when Super Junior began to give more live performances, displaying steadier vocal skills. Their ability was more strongly proven when they gave in live performances while dancing, most recently in MBC's, Show! Music Core, performing their new bubblegum dance single, "Wonder Boy".

Film and television career
Although Leeteuk was the first to appear in a drama back in 2000 in MBC's All About Eve, Kang-In was the first to debut as an actor among Super Junior, having a supporting role in the Korean drama, A Man and A Woman, released in May 2002. Kang In has yet to appear in a new drama, due to his dedication to be a radio DJ. Heechul, Siwon, and Kibum then followed, individually debuting in separate dramas.
Chances of Super Junior debuting in the silver screen became brighter when Siwon was chosen to take part in a supporting role in the 2006 Chinese film, A Battle of Wits starring Andy Lau. The film has gained positive reviews from the audience, and Siwon's acting was praised.
Super Junior's debut film Pretty Boys' Series of Terror Events (꽃미남 연쇄 테러사건) premiered on July 26, 2007 in Korea. This is the first film released from SM Pictures. [26] Every member of Super Junior is in participance of the film with the exception of Kyuhyun, who is still resting from the April 18th car accident. The film has yet to make its Asian premiere.
The film is a whimsical comedy involving a blogger by the name of Kibum who blogs all the terror events on the 14th of each month. Siwon will star as the president of the Student Union, Kang-In as the president of Judo Society, and Heechul as a president of Dance Society. In the film, the three become targets to series of terror events.
The film did better than expected in box office sales. In reference to online ticket sales, the company was expecting a 22% range, but the sales made passed 41.19%. [27]
The members also starred in various music videos from various SM artists. The most notable performance was in Zhang Liyin's debut music video, "Timeless", featuring Han Geng and Siwon.

Being a large thirteen member boy band, Super Junior's main target was at the younger audience when they first debuted. Siwon also remarked that Super Junior is a group with a variety of styles, for each member displays a different charisma.[28] Similarly, after the formation of Super Junior K.R.Y and Super Junior T, Super Junior began to capture different audiences. The majority of Super Junior K.R.Y's supporters are teenagers and young adults due to the group's active performances in ballad and sad love songs. Although Super Junior T's possible target are to a similar audience, they have successfully introduced the younger generation to accept traditional trot music. They are also warmly welcomed by the older audience due to their entertaining styles of performing. Recently, Super Junior has developed a more mature style; their vocalization becoming more heavily expressed and their fast tracks began to contain more detailed dance choreography.
Without a doubt, the majority of Super Junior's supporters are female.

A W A R D SSuper Junior confirmed their ability as successful performers when they were nominated as Best New Group and won at the 2006 M.NET/KM Music Festival, given on November 25, 2006. Follow-up awards include Best New Group and Mobile Popularity at the MTV Seoul Gayo Daesang Awards, given on December 1, 2006. N O T E Sa.^ All members of the group were present at the showcase with the exception of Ryeowook and Kyuhyun. Both were not present because they were not members of Super Junior at that time. However, Ryeowook joined Super Junior soon after this performance. Kyuhyun did not join the group until after their official debut.
b.^ Super Junior performed B2K's "Take It To The Floor."
c.^ Han Geng, Eunhyuk, and Donghae performed Usher's "Caught Up."
d.^ The album was called Super Junior 05 because it was the same year when Super Junior was officially announced as a group and also the year when they debuted. However, it is not certain if their future albums will have a similar title. (For example: Super Junior 07 for their next album)
