Ack! No one loves lotr sbg!
In the words of Grima, "That is a lie..."
I've been collecting LotR for over two years and, for those that don't think much about the LotR game, all I can say is that you've not really played it. Or if you did, you played against someone who wasn't at all enthusiastic about it - either that or you weren't.
I know someone who has been playing Warhammer and 40K for longer than I've been alive (and that's a good 19 years!) but when he played LotR with me he thoroughly enjoyed it because it is one of those games where numbers doesn't exactly secure victory. It's about the roll of the dice, strategy and how well you use your force on the field. Sending a Ranger of Gondor into a Witch King is going to secure the ranger's death but that could be a diversion to get a stronger character into combat with him - perhaps Aragorn or the King of the Dead or something. It's not exactly "right, my character has more rules than you so you're dead" or "this unit is larger so you're crushed" - in fact, nothing like it. The system works so that even an Elf can catch a sniper shot against a Mordor Troll - but he'll need a great testament to the ways of fortune to get it. That, in the guy's mind, was what made the LotR game so enjoyable.
It's developing more into a strategy game now, though, since the Courage rules have changed. You send your guys too far away from the leader when your numbers are down and they aren't going to stick around for long. And the new use for Will is going to be the general mainstay for your army when they reach the field. And with the new battle companies rules showing up in White Dwarf there's never been a better time to start collecting Lord of the Rings. And, of course, I can help you out if you need any tips or guidance.
