My dad is first counsellor too, but I don't usually get asked to speak because I attend the singles ward. My Homecoming assignment was half an hour long - be glad that you don't have to do that.
When I do talks, I usually start by looking the term up in the topical guide.

what ever you do, DON'T make an analigy(sp?) to pirates.
a girl in singles ward reused a talk from her cousins baptism for sacrament meeting last month and started it by "clearing up some common misconceptions about pirates"
"First of all, not all pirates were bad"
yes, yes they were. Pirates stole stuff. thats bad.
the analigy would have worked alot better if she had just said "on a ship the holy ghost is like the man in the crow's nest, the captian is Jesus, and the ship's owner is heavenly father" instead of tieing on pirates just because PotC3 came out. rolleyes
anyways... um, talk slow to save page space? neutral
