Life had gotten exponentially difficult for Beatrix Darnell with two toddlers in tow (even if this was pleasing alliteration). The desire to bond with a new child warred hand-in-hand with the practical reality of taking two toddlers shopping everywhere, especially when both needed new clothes and Hell would freeze over before Jacoba went gently unto the does-this-shirt-fit? night. It was equally difficult because Wisp Darnell had shown herself to have a cheerful, ridiculously easy disposition, and if Beatrix didn't watch herself she knew that she would let Jacoba get away with murder simply because Wisp didn't complain half so much.
Whatever the case, in order to go through the ordeal of finding Jacoba trousers that could be cut down so that they didn't affect her stumps, her tiny blonde-haired sister had been abandoned to the tender mercies of the late-night shopping creche. The mall was bustling with people all desperate to fulfill evening consumer needs, and the creche was filled to the brim with small children and aggrieved abandoned kids who were sulking and reading ancient comic books in a corner.
Distracted from missing her mother, Wisp had narrowed her big blue eyes and had taken to a slightly fossilized puzzle of Thomas the Tank Engine with only about seven pieces. Then she had gotten even more distracted by an enormous pile of crayons and newsprint: she was furtively consuming a fat yellow crayon when she thought nobody was looking.
The creche was FUN!

It had taken Mercury several days to recover from the shock of discovering that her new daughter was allergic to sunlight, and another few days to realize that whether or not it was practical, life went on. This meant that shopping went on as well. She needed clothes for a toddler, Angelique was practically foaming at the mouth for a chance to leave the house, and Ishi got loud when she went stir-crazy. Which she had been doing a lot recently. The front yard, even by moonlight, got boring after the fifth visit.
It had actually been Nereus who had suggested the late-night shopping, saying that evening that he needed rubber gloves for the next day and why didn’t they all go out as a family. Mercury and her oldest daughter had readily agreed, and all of them had piled into Mercury’s aging Jeep and driven to the mall.
Nereus had disappeared to the drugstore within seconds, leaving the womenfolk alone. Mercury and Angelique had instantly tried to go completely different ways and then realized that before they did anything, they needed to figure out what to do with the baby.
Which brought them to the crèche. Angelique had disappeared somewhere between deciding to go there and actually implementing the plan, so Mercury was dropping the little girl off alone. As she was set down, Ishi looked up at Mercury, turning her head to focus with her right eye on the woman. “Where go?” she asked.
“I’m going shopping, but I’ll be back soon. So will Angelique,” she said. Ishi frowned thoughtfully, inserting her thumb into her mouth while she considered this new information.
“I stay?” she asked. Mercury nodded.
“Just a little while. Go talk to the other children. Say hello like I taught you.” Ishi sucked her thumb in pensive silence, but eventually nodded.
“Fine.” And Mercury had left. Ishi watched her go sadly and then looked around. She took her thumb from her mouth and glanced once at all the children, turning her head to fix her good eye on each one, and then walked over and sat down not far away from a small girl with pale hair. She gave the girl a passing glance and then inserted her thumb into her mouth and stared at her feet.
She had just decided that people scared her.

The little girl looked up at the new arrival: what with a baby back home with no legs and a blind mother, she did not seem much perturbed at Ishizuke. Crumbs of yellow crayon fell from her mouth, and she wiped them away.
"Hellohiya!" she said, pleased. She had a much better starting command of the English language than Jacoba had, but the way she used it - indescribably twee - drove Beatrix bonkers. "You're a littl' girl like me. Hellos!"
Distracted again, the little blonde picked up a purple crayon.

Ishizuke looked up at the overly-sugary small child who had just addressed her and was reminded instantly of Mercury when she had just finished a pot of coffee. The comparison was not entirely a good one. She considered answering for a moment, then took her thumb from her mouth.
"Hi," she answered, opening and closing her fingers in a wave before inserting her thumb back in her mouth and watching Wisp taste the rainbow. Heck, she was digesting the rainbow. Mercury had told her that eating crayons was bad, when she had tried it. She withdrew her thumb from her mouth with a faint pop.
"You no s'posed to eat those," she said eventually, pointing at the crayons that had thus far escaped Wisp's peculiar tastes. Then she once again stuck her thumb in her mouth and turned away.

The other little girl turned big eyes on Ishizuke, pausing in the act of putting the purple crayon in her mouth. "Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?" she asked, drawing the word out for far too many syllables.
Then she added sympathetically, after looking: "You got'n owie on your face."

Ishi looked over again when Wisp gave the drawn-out 'why' and shrugged. She had already decided that she didn't much like the little girl who was talking to her when Wisp mentioned her face.
Then she blinked a couple of times, turned her head so she could stare at Wisp full on with her good eye, and very deliberately retracting her thumb again.
"Burneded by the sun," she answered, pointing at the lights. "Hurted lotsa. Hadda go to hopsickle."
And then she picked up a crayon and studiously began drawing a large scribble on the floor.

"Ooooooh," Wisp said enviously: she had never gotten to go to the hopsickle in her short life, and therefore Ishi was highly sophisticated. She racked her brain to think of things that were equally impressive. "My sissa got no feet," she said, and added: "I gotta splintner!"
Happy that she had successfully engaged with Ishi on the medical front, she mimicked her and scribbled all over the paper with the purple crayon. She got some of the crayon on her hand and giggled, adding more to herself than the paper. "I draw you," she said, picking up the pink crayon and licking it experimentally. "Okay go!"

Ishi decided that no matter what the mildly irritating little girl said to her, she wasn't going to respond. She was tired of talking. She was actually pretty tired in general. She did, however, manage to look interested and nod politely when Wisp talked about her splinter.
The only thing that confused her for a little bit was when Wisp said 'okay go'. Had she missed something? Was there a race? She didn't think she'd be able to miss something like that. She frowned a little bit, picked up a broken orange crayon, and started scribbling again. She was drawing a scribble. If someone asked what she was drawing, she would say 'scribble.'
Minus points for literal-mindedness and cynicism.

Wisp worked hard, sticking her tongue out the corner of her mouth. Fascinatingly, as she did so, little blue prismatic sparkles started to appear around her - tiny, fiercely blue rainbows, shading to green in places as she worked. Eventually, she ended up with a large blob of yellow and pink, and she dropped it in Ishi's lap with a huge pleased grin. "All done!" she said.

Ishi continued to scribble on the tiles, impervious to any sort of prior warnings about colouring on the floor, until Wisp said something. Since it was her left side mostly facing the girl and she was blind in that eye, she didn't even notice the sparkling rainbows that fluttered around Wisp. She probably wouldn't have cared anyway.
She was, however, polite enough to glance up and over at the drawing Wisp was holding up. Thumb still in her mouth, she nodded and tried to smile as best she could without removing the finger. Then she gave in and pulled her thumb out of her mouth with a 'pop'.
"Good," she said, and then looked thoughtful. "I Ishizuke. Who you?"
Bonus points for politeness.

Now, that was one heck of a name! "Ishh," Wisp attempted, then "zukeh," coming out with something eventually like "Ishazukeh." Eventually, she just gave up: "Ish."
Distracted by the amazing complexity of Ishizuke's name, she grabbed another piece of paper and started to scribble on it again with the red crayon. "M' Wisp," she said.

Ishi waited quietly while Wisp struggled with her name. She hadn't expected it to be so hard for the girl to pronounce, but the confusion it caused was an added bonus, since it meant that she didn't actually have to pay attention and converse with the girl.
It was a selfish reason, but Ishi was a small child, and small children often did things for selfish reasons, so it wasn't unusual, really.
Eventually, Wisp gave up and told Ishi her own name. And the girl nodded politely, then looked around for something to do. There didn't seem to be much...so eventually she looked back at Wisp.
"Nothing t'do," she said, not quite whining. "Boriiing..."
If her sister had been there, Angelique could have opened an illusion for Ishi to play in with her, but Angelique was nowhere in sight, and so Ishi was at a loss.

"Is cool," Wisp protested, still obviously entranced with the approximate ninety sheets of foolscap and all the crayons one could eat. She liked the noise and the bustle and the light; she was happy as a pig in mud.
Unfortunately, just as she was really getting into it, Beatrix appeared back on the scene with the pram and bags in tow. "Fitting time," she said briskly to her daughter, and despite the small blonde's immediate protest of "awwwwwhhh," Wisp was picked up and popped in the pram. "Jacoba, you'll be a good girl for the next five minutes as your sister and I get her things, won't you?"
"NO," Jacoba said hotly.
"That's my good girl," her mother said, and she and Wisp disappeared off. The little blonde's last words to Ishizuke were a merry "Bye!"; the half-blind girl was left with the redhead, instead. Having screwed up her mouth to yell out in protest, Jacoba looked at Ishi instead; then she smirked the sly smirk of every child who was destined to grow up the school bully.
"You's got a freaky face," she said, unknowingly echoing her sister. "Freaky face!"

Ishizuke opened her mouth to respond to Wisp, obivously not thrilled by the comestible possibilities of crayons, but a strange woman interrupted her train of thought and, in fact, removed the source of her bewildered discomfort.
And then Beatrix set down a girl with very peculiar legs and very bright hair. Ishi turned her head to fix Jace with her good eye, blinking once or twice as the girl started to taunt. She had never been taunted before, and had never really thought of her face as marking her as different. For a while, Jacoba's words didn't faze her in the least, but after a while, the sound got annoying. Ishi looked thoughtful, inserting her thumb into her mouth while she searched for a way to stop the girl.
"You not have legs," she pointed out, pointing at Jace's obvious lack. "Least I walk," she added, quickly finding her way into the spirit of the whole 'cutting comment' thing. She wasn't entirely sure why this girl was annoying her, but she would rather like it to stop, thanks very much.

"I walk," Jacoba said scornfully. Well, ... she crawled, and she could stand, couldn't she? The fact that she was actually markedly different hadn't really settled into her yet. It hadn't ever been called to attention in a way that made a difference; sort of like having red hair, something that was yours but was entirely neutral. She sniggered in an unlovely fashion at Ishi. "You gotta monsterface like Halloween."
