I have english pointer by the name of Roy. Now, one winter he just appeared on our lake house porch emaciated and looking just pathetic. We fed him and gave him a crate to sleep in. My other dog, Jet (also a stray we saved), who was about 1 at the time, simply adored Roy

That happened about 5 years ago, and Roy was pretty old back then. Now, he is just getting more tired and you can tell that he is ready to go. He used to be a champion hunting dog if you looked at how built he was. Yet, he is still hanging on despite the fact that he has horrible arthritis and a wheezing problem. He has even ran away one for 2 days in a row twice.

I was just wonder, how long is the average lifespan for a English pointer and how will I be able to tell when he is finally about to move on?
Also:
My other dog, Jet, has practically grown up with Roy. When Roy dies, I'm afraid Jet would just give up(like in Where the Red Fern Grows. Is it normal for dogs to be a bit mopey when a fellow dog dies?
(both dogs are male by the way)

I'm sorry to hear your dog is growing old, but my friend's Pit lived a full 5 good years after the vet said he had less than a year. So you never know. When your dog stops eating, that's usualy a sign that they are in too much pain to go on. But sometimes you just have to make that horrible decision. My dog had glaucoma and was blind for the last 3yrs of his life, but we didn't put him down when he became blind because he still enjoyed life and still did plenty. It wasn't untill his eye became swolen and he didn't even want to leave the house because the wind in his eye was painfull that we had to look at his quality of life and decide it would be cruel to keep him. Chances are your other dog will be sad and lonely, don;t be too quick to get another dog, a replacement can make the greiving a whole lot worse for your dog. My dog and cat were best friends, so when my cat passed, it was a whole year before we considered adopting again, but it's different for everyone.

My dad's dog Sadie worshiped his dog Kaybob, and when Kaybob passed, Sadie became depressed. She wouldn't move, wouldn't eat, so he had to get another puppy to pester her out of her funk.

When we had to have our dog Cory put down, our other dog Patriot was off his food for a couple days and he was mopey. He knew what had happened.

Dogs know when their friends die, and they are affected by it. Sometimes the best thing is to get another, sometimes it isn't.
