No, for me. I only got interested in Go after reading Hikaru no Go (manga). Prior that, I was playing chess more. I think I would be spending more time on chess now, if I have not taken up Go. I have seen short scenes of GO being played in some martial arts series, which of course never quite promoted the game much in detail compared to all the martial arts craps lol. I am so glad Yumi Hotta came up with this awesome anime series. My only regret is picking up Go late. If I had learnt it from young, I would definitely take a stab at becoming a pro. *sigh*

Hikaru no Go was it for me, too. I got interested in playing while reading the manga, and luckily I ended up meeting Cipher in the old guild thread (back before actual "guilds" as we now know them... when we walked everywhere in the snow, uphill both ways........). Thanks to her, I was finally able to play someone!
And now I try to get others into HnG in hopes that they will enjoy it as I have, and perhaps give me someone else to play. ^_^

I'm gonna go with the same thing everyone else has been saying, I wouldn't have even have heard of a GO for years if I hadn't seen Hikaru No Go on the Net, then I started getting the Manga (1-9 currently).
Three Cheers for Yumi Hotta!!

I'm the opposite of everyone. I didn't start reading Hikaru no Go until after I started playing go.
Of course, the friends who dragged me to go club with them had seen it, so I guess I still owe my go to hikago.

I would be not even knowing about go, probably. However.
There is a guy in a go club I'm in who thinks that if people were inspired to play go by Hikaru, then they're not "pure" go players. Why should that be? They're playing the same game, they know the rules, and they learn the same ways as the people who didn't get interested by reading Hikaru no Go. Besides, that would be like saying anybody who was inspired to dance because of a movie or inspired to be a scientist because of a lecture isn't "pure".
Crazy, right?

not necessarily...i can understand the way that he feels. With Go a lot of people have jumped on teh bandwagon, so to speek, and not come across go in a more profound way, therefore, some do not appreciate the cultural aspect of go as much as others. They are jsut doing it because it looked "cool" and "i saw it on tv". stuff like that.
however, saying people aren't pure would be a stretch...

I most likely wouldn't be playing. I stumbled across Hikaru no Go when I was reading though Shonen Jump, which I later got a subscription to. After reading a few chapters of Hikaru, I decided that I wanted to see the anime. Reason? To see if they showed the moves a little bit more clearly.
After watching quite a few episodes, I finally went and dug out a local Go Club. Admittedly, I don't go anymore due to the fact that it costs 10 bucks per semester to go. But anyway. If Hikaru had never existed, I honestly don't think I ever would've seriously considered Go. The only other time that I had heard of Go, before Hikaru, was a brief mention if it in Naruto. It was mentioned in regards to Shikamaru's genius level, with how his sensei could never beat him in Shogi or Go.

Nah I don't think so. But actually before I saw the show I've played it because it was something my sister was into (because prior she watched the show). But I wasn't too interested in it. After I watched the show it really got me going into the game. Thank goodness for HNG!
