So, not sure if this is an allowed topic, but if it isn't feel free to take it down.
Anywho, this is just a thread for what type of covering (be it head, or other type) you wear, and why (yes, this includes "I just like it").
For me; What: military (cadet) style emo hat. Why: Becoming more of an observant Jew, so head covering works for me. biggrin

Why? I'm an observant Jew, and we have three reasons to cover. One is to remind us that there is always something/someone 'above' us. Another is to signify to others that we are Jews; this also reminds us to be on our best behavior at all times. And the third is because once a Jewish woman is married, her hair becomes "nakedness," that is, a part of the body that should be kept covered, just like the other areas that she would cover. I have a fourth reason, but it's my personal reason rather than a religious reason: I just don't like my hair, so if I can cover it, I don't feel self-conscious. What? I wear a wide variety of hats, caps, snoods, and scarves. Most of them I get from one of three places: http://www.tznius.comhttp://www.modestworld.comhttp://www.shukronline.com (look under Hijabs) Sometimes I cover partially so that you can see some of my hair, while the rest hangs out the back of a scarf or cap; sometimes I cover fully so that none of my hair is visible. The question that wasn't asked: When? I cover my hair if I know I'm going to be around men who are not in my immediate family. At home, if a man or men are coming over, I cover. On the other hand, I don't cover at my gym or the swimming pool because both of those are all-women spaces, and no men will see me there. The logical reason behind covering one's hair before men is that hair is sexually enticing, and so if I know I'm around a man who will never be enticed by me, I don't mind uncovering. My hairdresser, for example, is mama's gayest little soldier, so of course he can see my hair. He'll never be interested in me, so it doesn't matter if he sees my hair, which is fortunate, because he's pretty much the best in town. Other men, men I'm not 100% sure are 100% gay, don't get to see my hair.

Divash said the religious reasons perfectly- ido not yet cover my hair (im not married; im only 16) but i am looking into the idea of it when i am older. i am a recently observant jew and go to an orthodox high school, where skirts of knee length and shirts that cover shoulders and have less than an inch and a half between the colar and your collarbone are requiered. i went to a jewish camp at the begging of summer and did not bring mostly skirts, about a week into camp i realized that dressing in skirts and modest shirts. i am back from cam p and now am only wearing pants if i am in an inviroment where i know i will not bee seen by men outside my family or when i am working out at the gym- i do not have the ability to work out in female only inviroment so i wear loose pants and have niot figure out how i will continue swimming

pig_girl, I may have an answer for you, both about swimming and about the gym. http://www.primomoda.com has wonderful sportswear. I have two of their sportswear outfits by their supplier Hasema. I also bought one of their swimsuits and am going to be wearing it on my cruise next week, and I'll let you know how that works out, if you'll remind me. Both the swimwear and sportswear are three pieces. Sportswear starts with a pair of track pants with pockets and an elasticized drawstring waist. Then there's the top. It's sort of like a zip-up shirt or tunic, except that it's about knee length. It's lined fully with cotton, but I also tend to wear a cotton tank top beneath it just in case, G*D forbid, it should come unzipped. The top has pockets too, which is great for keeping my keys or iPod with me. The last piece is a hijab. It covers the hair like any scarf, but the great thing is that you can tuck it into your brassiere straps beneath the tunic/top and it WILL NOT budge, no matter how vigorously you exercise. You can be rolling around on the mat doing aikido, or gymnastics, or whatever, and it just won't come off at all. Scarves or snoods tend to fall off if you roll around or go upside down much. The swimwear is also three piece. The first is a full-body unitard that covers you from wrist to neck to ankles. The second is a little overdress that conceals the body so that the exact shape of your figure remains indistinct; it's about knee length. The third piece is a hijab which, again, you can tuck into your brassiere straps for security. Even if you're not covering your hair religiously yet, I find that covering in the gym just makes sense. First, you're not worrying about whether it looks okay. You're free to just work out and not have to worry about vanity. Secondly, keeping your hair beneath a covering keeps it from getting caught in gym equipment, or grabbed accidentally, or stepped on and pulled. It's a safety feature.

at worship one of the women elders hands us a little lace covering and a pin to use.
id we are single or unmarried we get white ones; widows get black.
i find it comforting to have this in common since i have no money and some of them are rich, but it makes us look like one group of people.

I generally dress conservataly. The only time I wear hats is when I vollundeer at the cancer center. Somehow, those hats aren't meant for me. They are for the paicents that lost their hair. Wigs are a part of this too. All the good quality ones are gone.
Since I live in Florida, there are no hats around, except at the cancer center. Must thing only people that have cancer need hats. Oh well. They need them. Yes, these hats are free. Some of them are great design. I want to know who makes them.

It's a learning curve. I was debating in a thread I was moderating and accidentally deleted my opponent's quote, typing over her words so it looked like she was arguing with herself! :lol Those Quote and Edit buttons are a wee bit too close together wink

Hello, all. I'm new. Received an invite and thought it looked interesting, although I'm not totally sure how well I belong...
I don't usually wear any kind of head cover, except for purely fashion reasons. Usually a beret or fedora because...well, those are just cool.
I do tend to dress pretty modestly, I guess. I have some scars on my arms and torso that lead to awkward questions if people see them, so I usually wear long sleeves. I also sunburn way too easily, so exposing as little skin as possible is in my best interest.
