"Aw, can you believe it? We still can't use Spell-Checking Quills on writing tests..." Lorelei frowned as she looked over her freshly open supply/book list.
Allen Williams shook his head as he took the book list from his daughter. "It's only fair, Lorelei. Oh, wow, look at all these." He perused the parchment as his daughter looked over his shoulder.
"It's okay, Papa. You always worry to much about the prices which, I think, is totally unnecessary! Your family vault in Gringotts is loaded!" The red headed girl flailed her arms in the air. Allen looked at her sternly.
"Now, Lorelei, you know that we can only access that vault if we take Grandmum with us."
"Well, then bring Grandmum. She didn't mind my first and second year. In fact, she was thrilled to help us." Lorelei said, twiddling her fingers between her curls.
"Grandmum hasn't been well lately, Lor. We can't just drag her along to Diagon Alley...We're just going to have to pull together what I have and go from that." Allen said with a somewhat sullen expression on his face.
Lorelei nodded, a frown etched on her face as she thought of her sickly Grandmother. "But, Papa, if we use what you have, we'll have to buy books from the Junk shop..." She said, trying not to sound like a snob. She wasn't trying to make her father sound poor, she just didn't want her him to spend what little Wizarding money he had on her.
"Then we'll have to buy it from the Junk Shop. I want to hear no more of this. Get in your room and get dressed. We'll leave for Diagon Alley as soon as your ready." He shooed her away into her room, smiling all the while.
Lorelei sighed and shrugged then looked back at her father."I'm going to help with the expenses for my books, okay Papa?" She said when she stepped into her room.
Allen shook his head but before he could say anything, Lorelei shut the door.
________
Diagon Alley was as crowded as it always had been. Children peeked through windows while others darted in and out of stores.
Lorelei could see some familiar faces among the crowd but none matched the face of her friend, Alcyone. "Aww, Alcyone's not here."
"You'll see her in due time, Lor, don't worry." Allen said, leading his daughter into Flourish and Blotts.
Lorelei nodded, her eed curls falling over her shoulders as she did. After and hour or so of picking out all the books required, Allen and Lorelei Williams stepped out of the store with books cradled in their arms.
Lorelei scanned all the covers of the books to make sure they were all there. "I think that's it Papa. I can't believe we had enough money for all this!" She beamed and walked side by side with her father.
Allen nodded and smiled down at his daughter. "Aren't as poor as you thought?" He asked and Lorelei gave an uneasy laugh.
The two finally arrived home, tuckered out by all the walking and carrying of the books. Lorelei gave her father a quick hug good-night and scampered into her room. She was greeted by a squeaky humming sound: Stamp had been waiting for their arrival home.
"You ready Stamp?" Lorelei asked him as she picked him up and set him on her pillow. "We'll be back at Hogwarts soon. Haha, I can tell you're just as excited as I am." She giggled as she watched Stamp make small circles on her pillowcase.
She sat on the edge of her bed and stared at all the books and supplies carelessly thrown among the floor. "We'll start packing tommorw morning, Stamp. Then Papa won't have to nag us the last minute." She told him and placed him in his little shoe box bed on her nightstand. "Goodnight Stamp." She pet him gently and changed into her PJs. She spotted her wand under her bed ( she had to hide it since Muggle family members and friends came in and out ) and took it out. She turned down the lights, lay on her bed, and pulled the covers up, then stared at her wand with piercing green eyes.
She stroked the wand a few times then put it beside Stamp's shoe box. But after reuniting with her wand for what seemed like years, when it was really only a few months, kept her awake. Her thoughts drifted into who the new first years will be, what she'll learn, and all the new experiences she'll have. When she finally fell asleep, even her dreams were of Hogwarts.
