The honey touched mare trotted through the long grasses of the open field, enjoying the cool breeze that tickled her mane. The hazy summer day was muggy, the water vapor in the air sticking to ones skin like fabric! It wasn't necessarily a pleasant sensation, but the stirring breezes held a faint scent of rain. Dark clouds were looming upon the horizon, giving fair warning to the world that rain was surely on its way.

Bella had never liked rain. Oh, the occasional shower made puddles fun to dance in while younger, but age had taught the soquili that mud stained the coat. Slipping as a foal was a bit more gentle on the body than slipping while full grown! As it was, this muggy afternoon, the lady paused in her trot to look dismally at the distant rain.

If only the sun could break through!

Continuing on her way, Bella paused to admire a small bed of wildflowers that littered the grasses. I need to be more like them. . . , she mused, appreciating the way the pretty flowers kept up their radiant attitude despite the gloomy afternoon. Oh sure, one could argue flowers didn't have emotion or feeling, but they most certainly didn't fold up and hide from rain storms!

Then again, maybe they weren't as intimidated by thunder as she was. . . .

As if to echo her sentiments, a low rumble was heard overhead. It wasn't immensely threatening and only served to warn the acutely oblivious that shelter may be needed. Succumbing to the fact the sun wasn't going to shine anytime soon, Bella turned from the flowers and continued through the plain.

The woods wasn't far ahead. Perhaps she could find some comfort and shelter within the shady forest.

The heat was horrable, the mugy days of summer were unpleasnt to him. Kajika muttered softly under his breath as he looked up at the sky. Rain. Well the rain would be good at lest it would cool down.

He wished for a breeze, a stronger one than the bare whispers of breath that washed across the plains today. It was humid and hot, and all he wanted was a cool drink of water and some shade.

The stallion slowly looked off into the horrizon, and a smile crept upon his face. The forest was closer than he had expected it. The thick branches of the canopy where sheilding out the rays of sun that had made their way through the clouds. "Wonderful." He said to himself as he picked up the pace.

His legs where heavy with the heat but he forced himself to run, the sooner he was embraced by the shade the sooner he would cool down and feel like himself again.

Bella slowed her trot as she breezed over a hill, pausing to look on in relief at the beckoning woods before her. They were large and, as far as she knew, fairly quiet. The woods was the last place the honey touched mare wanted to be. . . . Except when in the midst of a storm!

Memories flashed of her smaller days, the thought of the darkness enveloping her alive at night. She'd gotten lost within the heart of the woods and had been stuck all night without a clue on where freedom might lay. Nothing had happened to her besides having a good scare - the long shadows, the rustling leaves and snake-like branches that reached for her still made the femme shudder.

No, the woods wasn't all elegance and romance as some liked to preach. But it did offer shelter from the elements. . . For that the soquili could be grateful.

Pawing at the ground as the last of the sunshine was swallowed up by clouds, the girl reared up before jogging down the hill straight for the trees. She had just made it to the edge of the plain, running parallel with the woods when a sound tickled her ears.

A new rumble, though this wasn't anywhere near the sound of thunder! Stopping dead in her tracks, ears pricked with curiosity the female stopped. One breath, than two and she placed the sound to be hooves! Another wasn't far off yonder and the sound was getting closer!

Sure enough, over a small rise in the plain came the form of a brown furred stallion. Hmm. . . . She watched him run before shying closer to the comfort of the trees. Bella wasn't hiding. . . but she was getting out of his way! No need to crowd the plain or keep it all to herself.

Ducking her head, the mare pawed at the ground, forgetting about the brown stallion on the horizon. She'd stay at the edge of the woods and plain for now. . . . She'd retreat in to the solitude of the woods only if the approaching storm worsened. Anything to stay close to the open fields. . .

Kajika didnt notice a ghost of honey slip inside the shadows of the forest. His hooves danced across the plains and the wheat grass tickled his belly as he ran. His lungs burned as the warm muggy heat pressed in on him from all sides. Sweat began to bead along his sides and brow and dripped into his eyes, stinging and blurring his vision.

Before he knew it he was embraced by the cool shadows and he slowed himself to a stop and rounded to look back over the plains. Dipping his head he caught his breath and shook his mane from side to side, the beads in his braids rattling softly against eachother. "Ahh... So much better in here." He said, closing his crystal blue eyes to the world as he relished the cool breeze that danced across him and caused the tree branches to sway.

As he opened his eye he saw a flash of honey once more. He held his breath for a moment and tilted his head. There it was again. It was almost as it someone was weaving in and out of the treeline. He tilted his head softly and slowly approched the mouth of the forest.

It was there he saw her, worry was present on her face as she looked out back across the plains. She like him who had saught shelter in the forest shade, but she didnt seem to enjoy it. "Hello there." He called out to her, hoping that he wouldnt frighten her away.

The world was silent. The thick clouds gathering around the world were growing darker by the minute, and a breeze began toying with her pale mane. An occasional gust blew through, small clues of the nasty weather to come. In a way the entire scene was perfect - an open, abandoned plain was a perfect spot to witness a brewing storm. Though there was a calm before the storm. . . .

Bella was far from calm.

The female just didn't like storms. Though lightning was beautiful to watch she knew of the power behind the light. Its deadly fingers need only be touched to result in fire, injury or death. If the electric tendrils weren't enough to contend with there was always the deafening thunder or worse, hail! Snow before winter, pellets of ice that rained out of the sky with reckless abandon.

Ugh. . . .

Snorting softly, she turned her head away from the plain only to find herself gazing upon a slow moving, approaching form.

"Hello there."

It was the stallion she'd witnessed running earlier. Ears pricking forward in slight surprise, the honey touched female's earlier concern broke in to a more radiant smile. Ducking her head, almost shyly, she shook out her frazzled, wind-blown mane and greeted the male gently. "Why. . . hello!"

It wasn't that she was super coy or timid, but the young female had matured enough to be touched by reservation. The world wasn't as innocent and pure as she used to believe. . . Even soquili could be twisted and cruel!

Given, Kajika didn't look dangerous, but one just never knew.

A small rumble of thunder and the concern returned. Eyes danced from Kajika, to the storm, and back again. Lucky him she thought; he didn't seem nearly as concerned or upset about the weather. . . .

Kaj's ears pricked forward at the distant rumble and for a moment he reconsitered the safty of the trees. Summer storms with the approch of autum on the winds could be the most dangerous. His blue eyes looked torwards the sky through the thick canopy of leaves that swayed above them in the breeze high above.

His gaze returned to the honey colored female and a light smile crossed his face. "Hello. Sorry if I started you." he said as another distance roll of thunder danced from the mountain tops and the sky was alight for but a moment as the first lightning strike slipped from cloud to cloud.

The air was filled with the cool freash smell, the smell of ozone before a storm. However much he may like that fresh smell the clouds that loomed black in the distance told him this would not be an enjoyable experiace. Heavy with rain they where slowly approching on the horizon.

"It seems that we will be in for a nasty bit of weather." He looked at the mare and noticed the consern that was written on her face. She was a stanger to him, but he didnt want her too be scared. "My Name is Kajika, what is yours Miss?" He asked her with a bow of his head.

Bella couldn't help but grin as the stranger apologized for his approach. "Oh no, no, it's not that. . . It's just - " The flash of light and thunder said it all. The fur on the back of her neck prickled as a touch of fear entered her heart.

Oh dear. . . why did the storms have to be so fierce? Couldn't the skies have blessed them with a cool shower instead of such a storm?

Tail swishing nervously behind her, she turned back to the brown furred stranger. At least she might not need to face the worst of the storm alone! "Nasty weather seems to be a bit of an understatement, I'm afraid. With luck though, it will pass quickly and the sunshine will return!" It was the only thing she could hope for at this rate. . .

There was no use trying to out run the weather and only a fool would be caught without protection. Even if the trees gave little shelter and provided their own dangers, Bella knew not where a safer place to hide resided.

There was her teepee back near the lake but. . . Bella was a free spirit and often strayed away from the human that gifted her with jewelry and love. It wasn't that she didn't appreciate her company but. . . . Bella was her own soquili and hers alone.

She preferred the open spaces and freedom to a closed in teepee.

As a flash of lightning sent her retreating a few steps deeper in the woods, she gave an anxious smile to Kajika. "My name's Bella," she finally responded, chuckling in hopes to break up her anxiety. "And I can't say I'm fond of storms."

Kajika watched the mare and smiled himself, she seemed a little less worried when she was speaking to him. At lest that kept her mind off the storm for a few moments. "We'll its nice to meet you Bella. I cant say I'm fond of storms myself, but they do have their own beauty." He said, cutting himself short.

He rather thought storms, like all of nature was like a mare. Even in her wrath they held such beauty and grace it was truely amazing, but that was a deeper feeling and he didnt want to share that part of himself so openly with a stranger, after all one doesnt spill their inner most thoughts to someone they just meet.

"I'm sure it will pass as all storms do, but it doesnt look like it will pass soon enough for my liking." he said as his blue eyes gazed up at the sky as sky lit up again in the distance followed by the rolling thunder. "Standing even in the thick of the forest we are sure to get wet...I know of a cave not far off from here where I'm sure we could find better shelter. Would you like to come with me?" He offered, he couldnt really leave her here alone with a good consence, she was so worried.

Bella shivered as the sky lit up, trying her best to keep her typical elegant composure. She just couldn't help herself - the storm looked ominous and agressive! There would be little shelter provided, even by the woods thick canopy of leaves and branches. Oh no, if the winds were fierce enough and the rains heavy enough, the weaker limbs would be nothing but projectiles. . .

"They are beautiful," she agreed gently, allowing her amber gaze to drift off the storm and back to the stallion beside her. At least he seemed composed! He must believe her a coward but . . . Bella wasn't stupid. Nature was not a force to be reckoned with. . .

"But deadly in such beauty. They can be wicked cruel," she added, ducking her head as if bowing before the power before them.

A rumble of thunder and Bella swished her tail. A splattering raindrop fell through the canopy, thick and cold. The sprinkle would soon turn to a downpour and the storm would be on top of them shortly thereafter! Ears twitching, at the offer to return with the male to a cave . . . "Oh could I?" She breathed, breathlessly delighted and relieved by such an offer.

Some might keep such a sanctuary secret but Kajika seemed not to be so selfish. "Oh yes, I'd like to very much," she agreed, feeling about as relieved as if someone had swooped down and rescued her from certain doom.

Who knew? Maybe Kajika had. . . Goodness only knew the storm was going to be a rough one!

The mare was right, the storm was deadly beauty and could be wicked cruel. Such words about the storm where close to his own beliefs and he nodded his head, his the beads in his braids lightly clicking together as he dipped his head.

The thick drops of rain where only a prelude of what was to come, the wind was picking up, causing the trees to bend and sway to the power of the storms mighty will. He didnt think Bella was a coward for fearing it so, she was smart to do so, deep down he feared it to. The wind bore with it a chill that caused his hair to lightly stand on end.

"Then we should hurry, I think even now we are to late to avoid getting soaked by the rain. " He said with a light smile, though his brow knitted softly together as he watched the black clouds continue to pour in over the horizon.

The mare at lest looked relieved at the offer of shelter, and right now he wanted to be no where else. The storm was beautiful but he didnt want to be caught out in it.

"Its this way." he said with a nod of his head before turning to lead the way through the thick trees. The wind continued to blow and the leaves and trees creaking against the force almost resembled the crashing waves of the ocean.
