Okay. So this is something that's been confusing me lately.
I keep seeing kids my age calling themselves "scene" kids. Usually, these kids dress like emo kids, listen to emo music, and generally act like emo kids. So I figured it was just the new thing emo kids were calling themselves.
Anywho, one of my friends told me that they weren't the same thing. So I turned to the one stop shop for answers (teh interwebz) and found this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Be-a-Scene-Kid
Basically, it's a guide on how to be a stuck up, conceited little twit. It has tips like, "Use old slang like 'rad' 'stellar' 'braw (bruh)' or 'dank,'" "Be a vegetarian or vegan," and my personal favorite, "Think that you are absolutely, without a doubt, the most gorgeous person on the face of the planet."
So I thought this was all very amusing. I figured that some stuck up a*****e somewhere wanted to be emo and decided to do it in such a way that they would still be the center of attention, and thus came up with "scene."
But to my surprise, I found out that, supposedly, punk rock is associated with these "scene kids."
Now this confuses me, mainly because everything I know about punk tells me that this "scene" stuff is bullshit.
I mean, punk advocates an independence from corporate and government dependency. Libertarianism with a bit of a socialist streak. A do-it-yourself attitude. Call it what you want.
Someone who truly believes in the "punk" lifestyle certainly wouldn't want people to be vegans or vegetarians "just to fit in." They wouldn't want kids to dress a certain way or act a certain way just to be a cool "scene" kid. So I end up confused.
Can anyone tell me just what the hell "scene" is?
Is this really what kids are into now days?
Does scene have anything to do with punk?
What the hell is the deal with subcultures changing their names to be different?
