Name it "The Ford"

That's what everyone identified cars by manufacterer back then, so they'd say "I have a Ford" or "I have a Buick".

So your car can be "The Ford" "Get in the Ford" "I'm taking the Ford" etc.

That's a beautiful car you have there.

I would if it didn't cost so much. I would never put my car in the hands of maaco or some chain car painting company... plus, the finishes on their cars are horrid. I do know where I might be able to use a downdraft booth, which would then bring it to just how much the paint would cost.

302's are nice, I was looking at a '68 that had a 302 in it. The only pisser is, '67 and later Mustang's started getting heavy. My car may only have a little 289 in it, but, it is a lightweight car. It weighs in only a couple hundred pounds heavier than a Honda Civic (non-hatchback). It surprises a lot of people to learn that my all-steel, 40-year-old, Mustang is lighter than almost every car it passes out on the road. I would estimate mine pushes about 2,900lbs. considering the heavier block, sound system, etc. A '67 or later mustang will come in anywhere between about 3,200lbs. and upwards to 4,000lbs. (some of the early '70 mustangs were just boats)...

I've been looking into stroking the 289 to a 347... it would take it to about 300-310hp I'd guess. Problem is, stroker kits are about $2,000 last I checked... for now, it will probably stay at minor stuff like 4bbl. carb, new camshaft, headers, distributor, etc. I'd like to get it running about 270hp, basically, have the same output as a K-Code mustang (Hi-Po), maybe lighten it a little bit.

It's amazing how much of a difference a carb makes. A stock 2bbl. C-Code mustang will run a 17.8 1/4 mile... just with switching to a 4bbl. A-Code (which actually means a 4bbl. carb, different cam, and possibly higher-compression pistons), you're running 15.8. I think a K-Code would run maybe high 14's/ low 15's... which isn't bad on a car as old as it is...

67' later Stangs are indeed heavier, i think its all the bull they add in them, heavier parts, thinking that they are more durable. I like lightweight cars. bore and stroke kits put a SHITload of power in the cars, my friend sleeved his also, its built for drag but it handles well in the street.
i think you need to be a gorilla to drive the thing, due to the power and constant oversteer. K-code, K-car? K-cars are lightweight cars usually with a 3cyl or a 4 cyl. the suzuki cappuccino is a tiny car with 3cyl. funny looking thing

I likes your mustang, i always did love classic muscle cars, i hope i can get a Plymouth Cuda and a Datsun 280ZX later in my life

Yeah, it's a different world driving a car like mine. I realize a lot of people still drive older imports that don't have traction control, abs, and what not, but, even so, it's different with a car as old as mine. Some of the things you have to do while driving my car appear archaic to people. K-Code mustangs are commonly known as Hi-Po Mustangs... they had a hopped up 4bbl. 289 that put down about 271hp... as compared to the 225hp of a stock 289 4bbl, and 200hp of a stock 2bbl. 289. I've never considered mine a muscle car, it's a pony car... almost a sports car I'd say with how lightweight it is. It's not going to win any drag races, but, since it's so light weight it can accelerate well and take corners are lot faster than most other cars of its time.

I've never been a huge fan of 'Cudas, not to say they're bad cars or anything, just not my taste. 280ZX's are awesome cars, really, any old Datsun/ Nissan Z's are great cars.

So, I've hit a dilemna...

summerjob is about to end and I'll be dropping $1,300 into my bank account... obviously this means ******** with the engine a little bit.

I'm split between three options:

1.) New dual-point distributor and spark-plugs: This is, by far, the cheapest option to go with and something where I wouldn't need to drop it into a shop to get it done. Mallory dual point distributor with iridium spark plugs (either Denzo or Bosch). Should see a marginal improvement in performance and hopefully a slight increase in fuel economy. Cost: approximately $450 (about a $380 disributor and $60 worth of spark plugs, plus other small things).

2.) Shorty Headers - most likely coming from Hedman. This will give me a much great increase in horsepower (plus marginal gains in fuel economy), plus a much better looking engine. Ceramic coated 16-guage steel. No Y-pipe would be needed because the car already has been set up with dual exhaust. This one I'm split between whether or not I'd drop them in or not. I'd have to find out if I would need to do much modification to the exhaust system. If they would drop right in place where the manifolds are then I'd be willing to do it. However, if it requires welding I'll need to take it to a shop. I'm looking probably at about a 20hp gain with this option. They include flanges, screws, and everything. Besides installation they would need to be tuned. This option would be closer to about $900 ($450 headers, several hundred in getting them installed and tuned).

3.) New carburetor and camshaft. This will be the most expensive option and will probably drain what remaing funds I will have. The carb would be an Autolite 4100 4bbl. 480cfm Carburetor (Autolites, when slight work is done, work much better than Holley), with a slightly different cam. I'm not sure how much of a horsepower increase I'm looking at, but, I am looking at 20mpg on a 289 V8, which would be great fuel mileage to get. The carburetor is about $500, plus, the new camshafts about $250. This would be something where I'd at least want to have a shop drop the cams in, I'd be willing to install the carburetor. However, considering the altitude I'm operating at I would need to have the carbs jetted to handle thinner air. This option, I'm guessing about $1,200 in parts, shoptime, etc.

So, which do you think I should go with?

******** with the engine eh?
sounds a lil kinky to me, i perfer a 2JZ myself XD.

I dont know much about muscle car mods, or muscle cars itself
but what is your goal in this?
drag?
torque?
or enough torque and speed to strip your paint?

Lose the A/T. Get a four-speed or a five-speed. =O

If you wanna gain my respect, be like that kid in FnF Tokyo Drift and drop a Sylvia engine into it... although, I have to admit: that's a mighty clean engine you already have in it. Nice work. =D

Nice car! i don't think it really needs a name to tell you the truth. and i don't think that i needs a paint job neither i like the way it looks. That is one beast of a car. Have fun driving it. doesn't really get good gas milege though and with the rise in gas prices have fun paying at the pump.
