Travel had been long and trying, but he'd made it. He'd finally made it. He'd crossed the Pridelands. This was a feat which filled Kichanga up with a heartening pride; the Pridelands were huge, and crossing them in just a few short days wasn't an easy feat.

His good mood was to be short-lived.

He came to a rocky ridge and stood upon it, looking down. The land below was barren, alien... a moonscape. Kichanga stepped back a bit and nipped at his lip. It was his nature to be generally cheerful and optimistic, but looking down on the Graveyard, Kich found it rather hard to be sunny. He couldn't help but feel if he went down there he'd get his head eaten off by something grouchy. But, looking back, he didn't think he could bear going back the way he came... especially after that encounter with a rather surly lion. So Kich stood on the border of the Pridelands and the Graveyard, desperately indecisive.

Bluu chuckled to herself as she tore voraciously into a carcass she'd drug into the frindges of the Graveyard. A gazelle, young and stupid, that she'd caught in the Pridelands. Not normally something she'd go for all on her lonesome, but it had all but leaped into her jaws when she rushed it from the cover of the dense grass.

Her dark blue fur was more purple and brown now, than blue, especially around her face, neck and chest. There was blood everywhere, and she loved it! The meat was tender and juicey, and it really hit the spot. While the hyena didn't much care if her food was recently dead, or if it was carrion, she did tend to get into moods where only meat still warm from the body would satisfy her.

The rounding of her sides gave testiment to how long she'd been eating already, and soon she'd be so full that all she wanted to do was flop down on her side and nap... But not yet. Tosseding back a large bite, Blue gobbled it down and let loose an ear splitting cackle, rather enjoying out the sound rang out over the stillness of the Graveyard.

It occured to Kichanga, after a few moments of standing perched precariously upon the rocky ledge, that he felt... rather exposed. He was practically on display up here, there for any passerby to see. He wondered if maybe he should head for a lower elevation.

Then he heard a cackle, and he froze, uncertain of where it had come from, or the intent of the one laughing. But he caught a distinct scent on the breeze. Blood. Gazelle blood. A fresh kill. Kich felt his mouth water reflexively at the smell of it and realized it had been a while since he'd eaten anything. Getting a good sniff of the wind, Kich decided to follow the smell and see if there was any chance of his getting a piece, although tracking the kill was taking him a bit further onto the Graveyard side than he would've liked.

That's when he saw her. A hyena. Now, Kich was an open minded sort and liked to give everyone a fair chance, but he couldn't help but feel a little nervous around a hyena if only for their reputation. She was taking such glee in her meal that she'd made quite a mess of herself, and at first Kich wasn't sure if he should say anything; ultimately, though, he came to feel a little awkward just standing there. So, hanging back a bit to give her her space, Kichanga cleared his throat and said, "Um... good morning, ma'am."

The blood splattered head jerked up at the sound of a nearby voice, long ears perking forward. Bluu scanned the area with keen eyes, a frown pulling at her face.

"Eh? Who's there?" She called out, stepping back to take a protective stance over her kill. Not like she cared to fight over it, but hell... she wasn't done yet, and she'd caught it by herself! "Show yerself!"

When her icy gaze found the other canine, she narrowed her eyes and studied him intently. Tans, not bad for hunting... male... but not hyena. How disappointing. Looks like a wild dog... which might or might not be trouble for her. "Whatcha want?" She barked, her tail wagging.

At Bluu's sudden movement, Kichanga reflexively staggered back a bit, ready to sprint if she tried to attack to defend her prey. Relieved when she made no such move, he steadied himself and drew cautiously closer, having been asked to show himself. Not wanting to cause problems, he obliged. For a moment he just let himself be studied, blushing at her suspicious glances. He wasn't quite used to being treated this way. But then again, he'd never really met a hyena before... maybe this was just their way.

Finally, though, he worked up the courage to answer her demanding questions. He decided it would probably be a bad idea to ask about food right off... she seemed awfully defensive of it. So instead he gave her a graceful bow and said, "Sorry to bother, ma'am. My name is Kichanga. I... don't really want anything. I just thought I heard someone over here and I could stand for some company." He cocked his head to the side with curiosity and grinned warmly. "Might I join you?"

Bluu let out a sharp cackle as she tossed her head, clearing white fluff from her eyes. She gave him a closer look when he came to stand before her, her view unobstructed now.

"I ain't no Ma'am, boy." She barked, her fangs bared in a fierce grin. How funny... a title of respect for a hyena like Bluu. "Ye can call me Bluu, and I'd be suprised if ye came here fer nothing but company. I'm not exactly the sort of someone that someone would want to just spend time with. And ye don't even know me." The blue female chuckled as she shook her head. Her white tail wagged as she licked her maw free of blood.

"Now, ye can stick around if ye want... ye must be rather lonesome if ye come to me for company." She eyed him for a moment more before she turned to snatch up a piece of meat, watching him from the corner of her eyes as she gobbled it down.

Kichanga winced a bit at the sound of the cackle but stood his ground. He wasn't sure this lady was... all there. But she'd yet to make any truly aggressive moves, so... the ever-optimistic wild dog held out hope that she was alright.

Nervous as he was, he still managed a reassuring smile (or what he hoped was a reassuring smile). He wondered if perhaps he ought to stop with the pleasantries, as they utterly failed to impress this rather roguish hyena girl. But that didn't stop Kich's mouth from saying, "Well, I'm just in the habit of greeting all ladies I meet as ma'am." He blushed a bit. Old habits die hard. He cleared his throat hastily. "Well, it's nice to meet you all the same, Bluu. I'm Kichanga... you can call me Kich. If you want, I mean." He glanced about himself awkwardly. He wasn't sure how to act around this girl. And he didn't honestly know why he wanted her company either, because he was pretty sure it wasn't just the meat.

He didn't realize it until she said it first, and his ears drooped a little at the thought. "Yeah, I guess I am pretty lonely," he chuckled. "It's been a while since I've met up with anyone who didn't want to beat me up." He smirked at first... though the smirk faltered a bit. Quietly, he amended, "Um... you don't want to beat me up, do you?"

Bluu snorted as she ripped free another hunk of meat, tossing it back with obvious relish. Nope, Bluu was no lady, save for the fact she was female. All that 'manners' stuff just got in the way of enjoying life. It was just too restrictive for her. She liked being loud and brash and rude, it made things fun!

"Do I need to beat ye up? Are ye planning teh steal my food? Attack me?" She snorted again at the thought. It wasn't even worth contemplating, since she could already tell that this Dog was not the sort. "Too much effort, boy-o. An while I'm beatin' ye up, there is a chance someone might just come along and steal my food. You're not worth loosing my meal over."

Another shap cackle burst from the female, her hyena-laughter rolling out over the dry, dusty graveyard. Silly male... what did she look like, some sort of priest, to give up the pleasures of life just to preach to some lost little waif? Chuckles rolled from her as she turned back to her meal, even less attention on him than before as she worked to fill the last little crevices in her belly.

When Bluu ripped off her next hunk of meat, a spray of blood spattered Kichanga in the face. He blinked a bit, paused, then reached up to wipe his face clean as nonchalantly as possible. No, that hadn't been embarassing at all...

Snapping back to attention as Bluu spoke again, Kich responded to her questions by laughing perhaps a little more loudly than he needed to. "What? Me? NEVER!" he declared obtrusively, and punctuated it with further insistant laughter. If dogs could sweat, Kich would be doing so right about now. And while it was true that he'd never attack anyone... honestly, he had been considering sneaking a bite if he could manage. He was awfully hungry. But now he had to keep on his toes.

"Alright, well... thanks for the vote of confidence," Kichanga muttered, calming himself a bit. Well, at least she wasn't going to beat him up. That was a positive development. He sat down hesitantly and shuffled his paws in the dirt, feeling suitably awkward staying here... but honestly now he was just getting curious about this brash lady. "So... um... you live here? Or..." He pointed down to the dusty graveyard "...there, rather?"

Hardly noticed the blood spray, though if she'd had she'd have been a little suprised. She'd have thought all the blood had leaked out by now, with how long she'd been eating. Silly male, to stand close enough to get hit by it...

She chuckled as a smile pulled at her mouth, gobbling down a few more pieces before she lifted her head and licked at her snout. Her eyes swept over the male, appreciating what she saw even if he was a bit scrawny and gangly... at least, compaired to a hyena.

A sharp cackle of laughed burst from the blue female at the suggestion that she might live with the pack. "Ha!" She barked, tossing her head. "Ye think I live with the pack? Bunch of wildebeasts, can't think on their own and need a leader to show them the way... not ol' Bluu, no sir. As for living here... eh." Her muscled shoulders rolled as she lifted a paw to lick it lightly, getting at a little of the fresh blood on it. "I live wherever my paws take me... and they happen to take me and leave me here for the time being. Could be different tomarrow, or the next day."

Her sharp eyes had noticed his ravenous gaze at her kill, and she paused in thought. There was plenty left... and she was practically bursting at the seams... Shrugging inwardly, she deserted the torn up carcass in favor of a pile of bones that cast a nice shadow, flopping her blue and red-splattered body down in the dirt. Her sides heaved as she panted, tongue lolling to cool herself. "Bluu's a wanderer, yes sir. Life's one big playground, gotta see all of it to really appreciate it." She said, half to herself.

The wild dog sat, stationed at what he felt was a safe distance, and he watched the female hyena with a great curiosity.. He winced a bit when she once again cackled, ears drawing back to protect themselves from assault. She was a loud one, she was, and Kichanga was sure his ears would be ringing before he left here... but he put up with it for now. After all, there was a chance he could get lunch out of this.

And then as Bluu ranted and rattled on, Kichanga listened intently... and now he started to feel a little more at home. As the hyena spoke, a grin slowly settled on the wild dog's face. These were awfully familiar sentiments, and they made Kich feel that maybe the two of them weren't so different as they seemed to be. "In this, Bluu, I think we're in complete agreement," he declared. "I, too, am a wanderer of the world, no ties to hold me down. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to live." Being born and raised a rogue, Kichanga has never really understood pack mentality... which might be a failing on his part, but he didn't think so.

He watched her move away from the carcass and continued to stare. He shuffled a little closer, but wasn't sure he should approach yet. He didn't want to seem too eager, or too aggressive. And so he reached out a paw and pointed at the kill, and anxiously he asked, "Um... you done with that?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2007 9:43 pm

"Eh?" The female looked up as he pointed at the kill, wrinkling her snout as she snorted. "Yah, I'm done. Gonna pop if I stuff anything else in this ol' maw of mine." She huffed as she grinned, shaking her head and neck to raise a small cloud of dust. That ever present dust, it seemed. Bluu might have been pretty, if she could ever get and keep herself clean enough to see that rich blue color of her coat, and the flames that licked up her stout legs.

"There is so much t' see... why would ya want to be in one place all th' time?" She shrugged and shook her head, mystified at the mind of creatures who spent their entire lives living inside their pack or pride boundaries. It just didn't make any sense... how did you know if what you got was good, if you didn't know anything else? That there was just stupid.

"Ah well... no accounting for folks' minds." She chuckled as she panted, tongue lolling from her jaws. Eating always made her hot... all she wanted to do when she was so stuffed was sit and rest.

Glee sparkled in Kichanga's eyes. "Alright!" he yipped, digging in eagerly. "Thank you kindly!" He ate quickly, for he was quite hungry, but he tried his hardest not to make too much of himself... although he could probably be sure that his present company wouldn't much care.

As he sated himself on the carcass, he listened well to Bluu and nodded. He sympathized wholly with her point of view. After all, that was why he, too, wandered. To discover all manner of new things. "Besides," he added as he gulped down a mouthful. "If you stay in one place too long it kinda feels like you're doing nothing at all." That's how Kich figured, anyway. He always felt so lazy if he stayed in one place too long, like he was betraying the whole world by not exploring it.

He shared in Bluu's chuckle and then dug in once again eagerly. He'd been uncertain about the hyena before... but now he was starting to think that he rather liked her. At least they had something more in common than he'd previously expected.

Bluu's lips curled in a grimace of agreement, and irony. It did feel like that, and now that she thought about it, she'd been spending far too much time here. What was she doing? She was a traveling girl, so why wasn't she traveling? She snorted and shook her head.

Her pale eyes shifted to watch Kichanga as he ate, and she found herself thinking it was really a shame he wasn't a hyena. He'd make a good one, he had the right out look and up-beat personality.

Flicking her white tail, Bluu sighed in content. Life was good... and she could always pick up her traveling again tomarrow. Not like there was anything that said she had to start now. Satisfied, she watched Kichanga eat with perked ears. He sure seemed hungry... She chuckled as her head tilted. "Don't get to eat much, Cap'n?" She grinned.

Kichanga could feel Bluu watching him, and suddenly felt self-conscious despite himself. He tended to try to keep up appearances, and here he was making a mess of himself. He knew that Bluu didn't care... but he cared... and he felt he was doing himself a disservice. Thus, he paused a moment from his eating, rather reluctantly, to clean himself up a bit, licking the blood and bits away from the dirty places.

He smiled, but sighed, at Bluu's question. "Not exactly," he replied. "It's... kind of hard to hunt as a lone dog. I mostly feed on scraps. And sometimes I get so distracted by my travels that I... kind of... forget to eat." Here, he glanced away and blushed, embarassed at the admission; forgetting to eat was a painfully foolish thing. In fact, he wondered why he'd told her. He'd grown so comfortable in her presence, what with their like-minds, that he now found himself announcing things that he might not otherwise say. After a brief, awkward pause, he resumed his feasting, struggling to tear old meat from bone.
