Many people would do anything to save their own life, I honestly cannot see myself deeming my own life more important than another's... Why is it then, that so many people would save themselves without even giving a second thought about the reprocutions it would have on other people?
Also, how do you feel as an individual on this subject? Would you do such things, in all honesty?

That's a tricky one.
I would think everyone wants to save their own lives. I think it's just the nicer people who will try to save someone else's life. Amongst all humans, there are the heroes where as everyone else runs and saves themselves.

I think it's natural instinc to try to save yourself, but you can go against your instinct and chose to save someone else.

It's hard for me to say because I've never been in that kind of situation... sweatdrop

I have been told I was going to die several times.

Lucky for me I didn't actually have lukemea or anything.
But it gave me a chance to think about death, and I think that maybe I could risk facing it for somebody else.
Geez, I sound like I'm making myself out to be a complete saint!
xd

I would probably do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

instinct would tell anyone that their lives are more important than anything else. but you tell yourself that others are more important.

I'm sure many people would be willing to risk their own lives and save someone else. But when the situation does arise, it becomes quite difficult to fight back the instinct.
Also, many people are afraid of what happens when we die. That's why I'm sure people would be afraid of risking their own lives to save someone else.
All in all, as much as we say we would throw our lives on the line for someone else, it would be hard to act in that given situation.

As much as I would not like to think about a situation where I would have to face this, if I was with Kyle somewhere and we were both in some sort of accident where I had the power to save only one or the other, I've already decided that Kyle would be the one to save. It would just mean more to me to know I saved his life, than for it would for him to die, and for me to live.

If it was anyone else I was with, I'd try to split my efforts.

well, i think it is an evolutionary instinct to put oneself first, but for me,
it would depend on who i would be saving..

I really like this. I would have to say that...yea most people totally put them selves before others. It also depends on whether or not they're heartless or not. I know one girl who would just walk by a girl dying on the street without a second glance. I know...that's totally horrible. This is really a tough question though.
This is what I think. If people have to choose between themself or someone they don't know then they would probably pick themself because they don't know the other person or their family; however, if someone had to choose themself or a close, loved one it would be a harder choice. If it were a loved on they would probably save his or her life (same with family or very close friends), but if it was just a normal friend or aqaintence natural instincts would probably kick it.

Yes, saving ones self is our number one most natural, strong instinct.

Then again...in the case of suicide that's a disfuntion of the brain...so then instinct gets just a bit messed up.

In my opinion, a lot of people would do that kind of thing.
I know i might.
But if it came down to it and i KNEW that i could save someone, then i would try my damnedest to do it. No if's, and's, or but's.
All it takes is a little bit of convincing and i can make myself do things i wouldn't normally even think of.
I would do anything for my dad, and he knows it, whether consciously or subconsciously. So if it came down to it, I would do everything in my power to help him out.

And that's MY take on it. dramallama

In some cases, yes. I think if you were put into a difficult situation, such as say...you got your arm trapped under a boulder. Rather than lying there to just die, you could cut off your arm safely and somehow manage to minimize your loss of blood.

But mainly, I think it comes down to determination. The more determination you have, the more willing you are to fight on.

there is a difference between self preservation and saving one's life. . .at least that's the way I think of it.
If saving your life was the priority, then people wouldn't smoke cigs, or eat bad food. We'd all exercise like crazy. We would over populate the planet. Oh. . .I could go on and on.

I think our true instinct is towards satisfaction or happiness.

In the end I would have to agree with all those who said it would depend on the individual(s) they were saving. I instinctly value my life one increment more than any human I am unfamiliar with. It would take a strong personal bond for me to sacrifice my life for another.

In such an instance one should ask themselves, "What is my life worth? No, I do not mean merely living day to day, but what may I accomplish to benefit the whole of humanity that will surely surpass anything that this other is capable of."
