He moved side by side, his brown coat shining as he trotted along the sand. It felt good between his toes, soft and comforting and though it had him stumbling he wouldn't have changed it for anything else in the world.
A rough, sea breeze ruffled his fur, tugging it this way and that as he loped clumsily along the uneven ground. His tongue lolled as he ran, his panting coming to a stop as he spoke.
I should probably go and see my pa, he'll be wondering where I've been. In fact Remiel was quite dreading the reunion with his father. The clingy, elder wolf had never been too keen on Rem going out of his sight, let alone away from the pack. Remiel supposed that was understandable after all he had been through but still...
You can come along too, if you like. I'm sure he'd like to meet you, besides my pa's den isn't to far from mine. Secretly he was hoping that with Sandrina there, his father wouldn't be so mad. Atleast he hadn't been off by himself! No! He'd found himself a lovely friend. He glanced at her dappled coat and felt a warm squirming in his stomach. Yep, if he got his ears chewed off it would have all been worth it. He'd met Sandrina.
As they drew nearer he raised his head and gave a small, almost wary bark. Gizmo had grown more and more dreary with every passing day. He would try to cheer himself up by hunting or doing something useful, but the rabbits always seemed to escape him and life just didn't seem worth living anymore.
Every evening he would sit by the edge of the sea and sing his song of woe, hoping that his poor dead pups and mate would answer him. Sometimes he imagined their voices were in the wind and he thought of throwing himself to the waves. Then he thought of Rem and he had backed away, returning to his state of half-death as he lay alone in his den.
Yes. Life had grown dark and not even the moon brought him joy anymore.
Sometimes he would think of Orphen and wonder what had happened to her. She had appeared briefly, lighting up his life with hope. For if she had survived against the odds, maybe his mate had too.
Maybe...
Either way, Orphen had gone as suddenly and mysteriously as she had appeared and he doubted he would see her again for a long time, if ever. Then his son, his last remaining son...
Where was he?
As if his thoughts had summoned him a bark caught at his ears and the small male raised his head from his paws, gazing out around him.
Rem? It couldn't be...could it? But Gizmo would not go without answering a call. He stood, pulled himself up from underground and gave an answering bark.
Rem? REM!? Then he charged forwards, breaking through the undergrowth and sliding to a halt just before crashing into a wolf he knew very well indeed.
It was Remiel. He was back.
Gizmo stood as still as a statue, wide-eyed and speechless. For the first time in weeks his candle of hope had been rekindled.

Sandrina was not used to this new feeling between her toes, but it wasn't an unpleasant feeling. In a way she kind of liked the way the sand shifted and moved so that it felt like a live thing under need the pads of her paws. The uneven ground took some getting used to, but soon she learned to shift her weight the right way as she padded along and this too was something she grew to like.
She inhaled sharply as the seabreaze hit her senses never before getting this sensation. It was crisp, clean smell, not like the musty moss smell her home provided. And the air felt exhilerating against her fur. The mottled femme could see why this pack had chosen these lands specifically.
"Okay," she said brightly. Not knowing the details between father and son she did not know how long this would take nor how things would go. She'd never known her own father and wasn't allowed to question who he was in front of her mother. But from what she did know of parents the relationship was something intimate behind closed doors and stern in front of others.
At least that's how it was with her family.
"Oh I'd like that very much!" she said, quickening her step to follow Remmy. She never once thought that maybe she might be imposing. If Remiel invited her then she didn't think it was just a formality.
At the bark Sandrina took another sharp breath and braced herself. She suddenly felt the need to look better, be smarter, faster, stronger, and every good attribute she could think of. Her want was mostly to give Remiel's father someone to be proud of. She wasn't sure why, or why this thought had come so out of the blue.
But she wanted Remiel to surround himself with a worthy friend.
Hopefully she achieved the feat.
But, when the elder male broke forward she was suddenly intimidated. Not by anything he had done, but maybe that she couldn't measure up. She was a stupid wolf, she knew. Afterall, none of this would have happened if she was smart enough not to get lost. But...she was glad it happened! All the same, she felt small.
She smiled meakly though the other wolf seemed to be fixated on Remmy.

Imposing or not, Remiel was still glad to have Sandrina to his side. Maybe it'd soften his father;s words. Though come to think of it, Remiel didn't think he'd ever heard Gizmo raise his voice to him, let alone shout. No his father was a kindly pacifist. It was more Rem's shame than anything, that had him worried about this reunion.
Almost without realising it, he pressed himself against her, walking so his shoulder brushed against hers. He wanted to thank her for just being there but thought it might sound goofy, so decided against it. He'd thank her later, for now he had something important to do.
Besides, he really did want Sandrina to meet his father. Somehow he needed Gizmo to accept her as one of his friends and like her as much as he did. His tail wagged and suddenly he heard his father's voice calling him.
Don't worry. He spoke quickly. My pap will love you. And then the undergrowth moved and his father's face came into view.
Gizmo seemed stunned, not by the fact that Remiel was there, but the fact that he wasn't alone and with a female he didn't recognise. He sniffed the air daintily then turned to gaze at his son. His eyes shone with unshed tears and his tail wagged very slowly from side to side. The colour of his fur hid his age, grey almost invisible against white, though the fur had grown a little wispy around his muzzle.
Rem... Gizmo wasn't a smart wolf himself. He would never have won any contests in thinking strategies or exploring 'outside the box'. He was all for the hear, thinking as a pacifist thinks. To him, love and joy and friendship could fix any problem in the world.
Rem... But at this moment the wolf seemed to find words difficult, even for him with his strange and somewhat awkward speech.
Rem back. He finally finished. And without warning he pounced his son, rubbing his face against Rem's neck as if he were a pup. After a moment, when his joy had evaporated to something more controllable he turned to Sandrina.
Gizmo happy you brought Rem home.
Rem beamed proudly, glad to see that he'd finally grown larger than his dad and smiled between father and friend. She's Sandrina. I met her on my journey.

When Sandrina felt Remmy's shoulder brush against hers she half closed her eyes and moved her tail so that it light touched his side. He had a way of making her feel less afraid, and more confidant. She liked that feeling. Around him she didn't feel so stupid and most of her words, though at times they still came out sounding silly, sounded so much better when he didn't chide her for them. No, she could always be herself around him.
She beamed at that. If his father was like Remiel, then she was sure they would get along well. Though she did have a slight curiousity to see how the two wolves measured with each other.
Remmy was softspoken and gentle? Would his father be the same?
She sure did hope so.
At the happy reunion she smiled. She definitely could see how the two would be related. Even the air seemed to shift and twist to the nature of the wolves. It seemed calmer somehow, more peaceful and serene.
Twas a good breeze.
Sandrina's eyes lit up. She didn't know what to say to that, it sounded too special for words. Thankfully Remiel broke the silence and her words finally left her brain to come out of her mouth.
"It's a pleasure to meet you sir," she said daintily.

Remiel's heart filled then. The little gap that had been aching slowly filling itself in until he felt complete again. This was all he needed. His home, his father and...his friend. His friend? The word didn't sound quite right for Sandrina. She was different from his other friends, different from Equus and the others he had met. She was...a special friend but he just couldn't think of the appropriate word for it.
However, where he found difficulty in finding the right word. Gizmo didn't.
Gizmo no sir. Gizmo just Gizmo. Especially to Rem's girlfriend. His tail wagged and he seemed not to notice the complete look of embarrasment and shock on his only son's face. Gizmo was worried Rem might not come back... He glanced at his son's face and smiled softly. His fur was the colour of his mother's. His heart gave a small lurch but in the next moment it was gone.
Aeria wouldn't have wanted him to be sad for the rest of his life, besides with Remiel back and with a girlfriend there was a future to look forward to.
Sandrina come from far away? Both look very tired. He was beginning to realise that they were probably exhausted after their journey back. Gizmo not have any food here. No luck hunting lately... His ears drooped shamefully.

Had Sandrina known what he was thinking she would have uttered some similar confusion. Friend truly did not seem an adequate word to describe the growing bond they had. She felt for him like she never felt for another. Not friends and surely not family....maybe not even for herself. But, though Sandrina was slow she was equally inept in the ways of relationships. She would call him a friend, even though it felt severly lacking when describing him.
But then too, Gizmo's words hit her ears.
"Oh okay then, Gizmo it is," she said sweetly before that one word hit her eyes and melted her heart.
Girlfriend?!
Sandrina didn't how to respond to that. What could she do or even say to something like this? She looked over at Remiel, hopefully and then quickly turned away. It hit her like a dive in icy water, this strange feeling she was having, deep within her chest. The thing that took hold like a thief in the night. It was LOVE. Completely and utterly. She was head over paws in love with Remmy.
But with all self assured knowing there was also a shred of doubt. What if she was in too deep. What if Rem didn't love her back?
She decided not to think about that. She would later, but not right now. Though she did want some kind of sign that this was true, that she could be his...his... she wasn't sure if she could even think it. It seemed just too good to be true.
Instead she focused back on Gizmo. "Oh yes, very far...I got lost getting back to my pack," she said rather sheepishly. As he drooped she was ever quick to encourage. "I'm sure you're a great hunter anyway!
Everyone has their off moments...and, we've just eaten," she added quickly, "so no worries.." She smiled big and bright, hoping this would take his shame away.

Remiel was in a daze. Completely and utterly. He stared out acorss the tree seemingly frozen in place. The look of shock had dulled to something akin to confusion. Why was his heart pounding like this? Why was his stomach filled with fluttering butterflies.
Maybe the rabbit he had eaten was bad or...
He cast a glance towards Sandrina and swallowed. She was different that was for sure. She was far more intelligent than any other female he had met. She knew how to love life and she didn't let anything get her down. A wolf who knew how to live like that had to be smart.
He wriggled on the spot, his tail waving slowly. Could Sandrina really be his...girlfriend? They hadn't done anything that he wouldn't have done with a friend, though secretly he wished she would stay. Most friends he met he was quite content to let them og on their way. With Sandrina...it was different. He wanted to cling to her and never let her go. Besides, his heart did funny things when he looked at her.
Was it love then? Could it all have happened like this? So unexpectedly?
I would always come back. This is my home as long as you're here, pap. He was sorry that he had made his father worry but not so sorry that he regretted his actions. A young wolf like him needed to get out and see the world. Besides, he had secretly been hoping that he would find some sign of his mother and siblings.
He decided it was best not to tell Gizmo that.
Sandrina's right, we hunted. I used all the knowledge you taught me. We are tired though. I thought I should come and see you before we slept though. He stepped backwards in preparation to leave. But you know where to find us now. It was Remiel's way of saying goodnight.
But just as he was turning to go he remembered something and turned his head back to his father, catching the shine in his golden eyes. Oh, I met Whisper by the way. He thought he should bring atleast his father one bit of good news. Without realising it he had shifted closer to Sandrina again. She remembers you. I think she said she's coming to visit.
Gizmo wore a soft smile on his face. He couldn't believe how much Remiel had grown. In his mind he remembered him a pup, cuddled to his side, sweet and innocent to the world. Now he stood before him an adult, strong and well and with a mate no less. He smiled at their inability to register the word he had used but he knew it to be true, even if they hadn't come to turns with it yet. They had the same aura as he had had with Aeria all that time ago.
Gizmo not very good hunter. Gizmo only catch rabbits. He wriggled with embarrasment, clearly not used to receiving compliments. There was nothing spectacular about this wolf. He was neither big nor strong or very dominant yet somehow he had managed to survive, catch the heart of a wolfess and raise a little of pups, one of which was with him now. Like Rem, Gizmo liked to think they were still out there somewhere, but his old heart doubted it sometimes, especially when night came and he saw those same stars twinkling brightly at him.
Gizmo let you sleep then. We talk tomorrow. He watched Remiel turn to leave, his ears twitching forwards. Whisp? He thought to his old friend and a joy mixed with guilt washed over him. Poor little Whisper. It seemed he wasn't the only survivor after all. Warmed by the news the wolf turned and headed back into his den.

She said nothing to Gizmo, but let out a small half chuckle, thinking he might be kidding. That this wolf was being modest to be polite. If both wolves knew how highly the motled female thought of them then perhaps their confidence levels would be just a little bit higher. But, all the same she didn't touch further on it.
Sandrina stayed quiet for the duration of Rem's internal battle and while he continued to speak to his father. It wasn't really her place to say anything and even if she felt the need to voice a sentence or two, she didn't really have anything to say anyway. Thus, she stayed close to Remiel; smiling occasionally or letting her tongue loll out of her mouth. In a dainty way of course.
When she felt Remmy's body move backwards, being as close as she was her interest was heightened and she was pulled back into the conversation at hand. She nodded at the uttered phrase. Yes, they were tired. Awfully so, but she didn't add on to it.
"Goodnight," she said sweetly to the older wolf before following Remmy away.

Leaving his father behind, Remiel dipped his head to murmer. The den is only just around here. He nudged at her cheekfur, taking delight in how thick and soft it was on his nose. He particularly liked how her scent filled his nostrils and remained there even when he drew it away. He had a slight bounce to his step even though he was tired and when they reached the den he paused at its entrance and smiled back at her.
Home! He replied with a fast wag of his tail. Then, once his introduction of the den was complete he slipped in. The mouth of the den was actually rather small but inside the chamber had been widened out and had enough room to fit three large wolves comfortably. He pushed himself to the far side and flopped down, panting. The smell of home was perfect. He could smell the scent of the thick, moist earth and the leaves and fur that covered the floor.
Make yourself comfortable! He replied, tucking his head into the groove of his paws. He yawned then, closed his eyes and continued, seemingly not wanting to fall to sleep so soon.
Tomorrow we'll go to the sea and I'll show you around. But only when we've slept as much as we can. He laughed, though it sounded drained.

Sandrina nodded and pressed her cheak further to his nose as he stayed where he was. She felt giddy, like a headrush from some unnamed source. It was a good feeling and not one she wanted to let easily slip away. Her tail swung to and fro and just like he she was tired and drained but still felt a strong kick in her step.
At the word she inhaled sharply, letting each syllabel carress her heart and warm her soul. She commented that it was a nice place, a lovely place, but her brain could not really make the full scop of her feelings be heard or spoken. She was so filled good vibes she couldn't remember a bad time. But, now a new question entered her brain.
Where to sleep.
It was true the den was large enough for five of her, but she didn't want to be away from Remmy. She didn't want to overstep her boundries either.
Oh this was hard.
Well he HAD said for her to make herself comfort. And Sandrina could only think of one comfort to be had. So she padded over to him and flopped down, burrowing in his side and resting her head on her paws.
"That sounds nice," she murmured as she half closed her eyes.

If a wolf could purr, Remiel would be purring at that moment. Instead he panted softly, his tongue lolling from his mouth as she snuggled up against him. This feeling was different. It wasn't like snuggling with mother or his siblings as a pup. His fur felt like electricity as it brushed against hers. He could feel her warmth radiating from her, absorbing it and sharing it.
He would sleep well tonight, he knew that. The warmth and comfort of having her beside him was already making him feel sleepy.
He raised his head and brushed the end of his soft, whiskered snout across the top of her head, nuzzling briefly against the back of her ears where the velvet fur grew. Soft. Comforting. He curled his tail up around her hind legs, as if holding her against him.
Goodnight. He whispered, unsure whether she was even awake anymore. Then slowly he hooked his chin up over her neck, using the thick fur at her ruff as a pillow.
Warm.
And Remiel did indeed sleep very well.
