He was exhausted from the hunt, but only wished it had been more successful. His cousin had gone with him- but with the major herds now leaving the packlands for the winter, it had been hard locating the travelers in the brush.

It hadn’t helped that Hayden, fresh now from the north and full of stories and constant exuberance had clearly reminded him how vastly different he was from the rest of his family. Good, strong, black furred wolves with bright eyes, sharp teeth, and wits to match it. Even growing up, his good friend and cousin had always outshone him. Out of all the third generation Hrothmunds- surely it was Hayden and Thallen that had had the most promise; and with poor Thallen dead, that left Hayden to wear the crown of the idealistic throne that was their family. No doubt when Phib died- it would be Hayden who would grasp control of the family. If his mate Joana didn’t grab it first.

It troubled him, but it always had. And he felt particularly guilty for the feeling after Hayden had been nothing but good to him. When they were pups, he’d scrapped with the other young males to keep the runty dirt-fur’s nose clean. And he’d saved his other ear- that had to mean something.

But. Worst of all- he’d have to introduce him to Mozelle now. And that worried him most of all. He loved Hayden, sure- like a brother. But like a brother who was catnip to women more times then not. Phib might have had the stoic resilience of a soldier- but Hayden had all the families charm.

What did that leave him with? He grunted and settled down with his head on his paws. Mozelle didn’t seem to be around yet, and he compulsively missed her. She was the best and only good thing that had ever happened to him. In embaressment, he flushed and folded his ears. She said she loved him, but he wished he could do something to really earn it. Really feel like he’d made himself worthy of the returning affections.

But so far... not so much.

Hazily, he yawned and shifted his hips. Maybe it would go well though. He’d love Mozelle to meet more of the family- particularly the family that wasn’t his father. God knows, Phib had already bragged to them about her.

The spotted female stood quietly on the beach, her toes sinking in the sand as the water came up and nearly touched them. But she stood far enough back to where the water would never soak up into her fur. She didn't like the feeling of wet fur, but she loved the ocean. It was so calm and so serene, and the smell of salt was calming now. At first it had been a bit overwhelming, but as she had settled down with Gareth she had come accustomed to it.

Gareth...

She had news to tell him, such wonderful news. But she wondered how exactly to put it. They had been trying for so long that it had seemed they would never conceive. But now... now they were finally going to be parents together. It excited her so much that she couldn't stand to be on the beach for much longer.

She wanted to find Gareth.

Mozelle had noticed that over time she had never stayed away from him for very long. Whenever she left him to do one thing or another she always made a point to hurry back to him. Perhaps it was the way that he made her feel, so complete and whole. Or maybe it was that her heart still fluttered and her stomach still filled with butterflies every time she even thought about him. All of those things told her that she had done the right thing, choosing him over Kapu.

And these new lives inside of her, they were proof now that they belonged together. They had gone over some rough times before, in their earlier attempts, but her getting pregnant now only proved that they could endure whatever life threw at them. Together.

Wagging her tail, the mother-to-be turned away from the sea and headed back to her mate. She wasn't quite sure where he was at the moment, but she knew that she would be able to sniff him out. His scent always stood out the most to her within all the scents from the other members of the pack. And it proved useful, especially now when she felt the need to find him even more dire. She wanted to tell him the news; she needed to tell him.

"Gareth!" she called, excitement coursing through her veins. Suddenly his scent hit her and she yipped excitedly, changing her course slightly so that she was heading straight for him. She couldn't wait to tell him! Her belly was already slightly bigger than normal, but she knew that Gareth wouldn't comment. Not if he wasn't sure if it was just her gaining some extra weight from eating a lot or not. He was always so sweet about those sorts of things. One of the many reasons she loved him.

"Gareth!" she called again, growing closer. "Gareth where are you?"

The sound of her voice rose him from where he sat, and momentarily dispelled the worry and inadequacies which always haunted him. “Here, here!” He called, and jovially broke towards her, his body tossing about the brush with little care for what was in front of him. He greeted her like a pup himself, full of nothing but squeaks and whines and nervous ear turns as his tail ground into the sand. After the brown wolf had settled, he chuffed and licked her muzzle. Nervous habit brought words from his mouth- but, she was probably used to it by now.

“Mozelle! I just got back! I’m sorry, what is it?” He writhed and sat, a wild but generous smile crossed across his muzzle. “I’m… agh,” He frowned and shifted his ear. “Didn’t get any food, have to see if someone else had better luck today-“ He prattled as he watched her silver form.

She looked particularly beautiful- but he had always thought that and thought nothing of it.

Mozelle couldn't help but laugh slightly as she heard her mate's ramblings start up in response to her calling his name. Her tail swayed gently back and forth as she eagerly approached him and accepted his greeting. He was always so adorable when he acted this way: puppyish and always so full of energy. He'd need it all for what lay ahead of them.

She smiled warmly at him and patiently waited until he had calmed down a little bit. Once he had finished, she took a step forward and nuzzled against his neck fur and up against his chin.

"Don't worry about that, Gareth. We can always find something to eat later. We can go hunting together." Together. It was such a magical concept. Together they were and together they would always be. Nothing would change with them and, if it did, it would only be for the better. Like now, with these new lives forming inside of her. She just knew that he'd be thrilled to hear the news.

"But right now it doesn't matter. I have some news to tell you," she spoke seriously, though not in the way that hinted at bad news. How could it look like bad news, what with her being the way she was? She felt like she was practically glowing with pride and joy as she smiled at her mate and as her tail wagged gently behind her.

"I think you'll like it."

It took a while for him to settle, but when he finally had the gentle movements of the female beside him calmed the nervous wolf down. He sighed and flattened his ears, and let the bridge of her nose rub against his neck. How did she ever get to be so soft? He was too embarrassed to ask how she did that, and all the amazing things she seemed to do. He only hoped he could be worthy of that- of her time, her friendship, her love…

Her words distracted him, and Gareth blinked and peered downwards at her. “Wh-what?” He commented lightly, unsure of what she said at first. Something to tell him? Compulsively, he feared it. News was rarely good for the brown male- but he would not doubt Mozelle when she said it was good news. He hesitated and wagged his tail, before meekly smiling.

“What…do you mean? What kind of news?” Maybe she’d already met the bunch? Was his father planning something? [Wait, how could THAT be good?] Maybe… “Good, news?” He asked again, his head tilting.

Mozelle giggled slightly to herself as she watched her mate get all excited then wind down again. He seemed flustered at times and she thought it was the most adorable thing in the world. If he became any more adorable she'd have to attach herself to him and never let him go. It was a feeling that was hard to explain. Everything he did just made her more and more attracted to him. His difference from everyone else made him that much more special to her. She loved that he could be so different all the time.

Of course, his father didn't see that as such a great thing. But she felt that, with time, Phib would warm up to his son. It was just going to take some persuading or perhaps some motivation. Speaking of which...

"Yes, good news. Very good news." She took in a deep breath, restraining herself from simply blurting it out at him. She knew that he would be so thrilled at the news, as she had been, but she didn't want to seem like a total lunatic.

"You know how we've been trying and trying to have puppies?" She let a pause fall between them, wagging her tail as her violet eyes glowed with pride and happiness.

"We finally did it!" she blurted, lurching forward to nuzzle herself against him. She was holding herself back, but she felt that even then her feelings were so much that she was nearly toppling him over. But could she really be blamed? Honestly, this was the greatest news of all. Finally, the two of them would be parents together. It was a sign that they were truly meant to be together, despite everything else.

"We're going to be parents!"
