All right, everyone, this is another stroke-of-brilliance-of-the-crew idea: monthly prompts. Every month one of us gives you a prompt, and you write something. You can write whatever you like, a poem, short, and if you're a masochist you can go with the novel. This is a little excercise to help those of you in need of a respite from writer's block, or something to practice with.

Post it here, just like any other piece. Feel free--or forced--to help each other out. xd

Peace.
~Kirby

Monthly Prompt for August:

Planetary Eclipse. When a planet covers the sun. I don't know if that's possible or not and I don't really care--ponder it. Be inspired by it. Write something about it. Or about Jupiter crashing into Earth, I'm fine with anything. (: Imagery is a good skill to work on this month. Goooo~!

Okay, it's feeneshed.

It was coming.
She could feel it in the chilly air, an aura of hopelessness and dread that seemed to strike a ray of despair into the depths of her very soul.
In exactly three days, the dark planet would blot out every last ray of sun, and the world would end.
It was a horrible way to die, really, and it was the reality facing the young girl with her bright face and brave smile, her demeanor belying her fearful nature. To be cut off from every last memory of warmth and happiness! To die in fear, cowering like a helpless animal in the dark! In three days it was coming.

As if to leave her fears behind, Jennifer sped up, the crisp autumn breeze ruffling the edges of her scarf. Yes, the world would end. And it would be horrible. And she was the only one who knew. As her warm brown boots crunched across the fallen leaves, memories arose from the ground like ghosts, transparent and emanating an otherworldly light. It was her friends. She turned up the volume on her cheap CD player. It was not enough. The voices swirled around her, faster and faster, finally breaking her fragile mental barrier.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this, Jen?”
“Where have you been? What are those marks?”
“Jen… What’s going on? Is something wrong?”
Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong indeed.
But Jen wouldn’t talk anymore.

At school, the familiar assault of noise—classmates jabbering away at the latest gossip, other mp3s turned up, like hers, to escape the useless cacophony, the bells that signaled the start of classes.
Another day in hell. Day in, day out, it was the same, raucous, careless, and impersonal. She whiled the time away like an automaton, shuffling to each new class, her headphones tamped into her ears under her fleece hoodie to block out the noise. Teachers came and went, asking questions and expecting answers, and Jen would resentfully reply, mumbling incoherently under her breath an undoubtedly incorrect answer. There was a time when she had enjoyed it, all of it, but it was long past. Jen had been a bright student.
Not anymore.
At three-fifteen, the noise stopped. She removed her headphones and lumbered home in a half-waking haze of unseeing and uncaring. The next day would begin soon.

The second day passed much like the first, with one visible difference. Her indifference had been replaced by a fretful overexcitement, an agitation that became apparent when she arrived at school. “Jumpy Jen” her former friends leered. Only one day left, and it would all be over.

Excitement once again gave way to apathy. Today was the day. Alone in her room, her shaking hands lifted the gleaming pistol from its box, a shoebox, inconspicuously shoved under her bed. No one had suspected a thing.
One.
What had started it all? Who was to say? Things had gotten bad, fast. Maybe it was her dad leaving, or that stupid breakup. It didn’t matter, anymore. Her whole world had gone to hell. Mars rose like an angry storm in a blood-red sky, the war-god’s planet urging her on as she sparred, self against self, fear and desire. She knew what the outcome would be.
Two.
She knelt by the bed. What about her parents? Her sister? They would be better off without her, she knew. Her friends? They had moved on weeks ago. Now, a crater of sorrow obscured her vision, her emotions eclipsed by sadness. As shadow overcame her vision, she welcomed it, embracing the enfolding darkness. Her world was gone. She would succumb to that numb dread permeating every inch of her soul. Her story would end.
Here.
Now.
Three.

Awesome. Love how the prompt was totally not a metaphor, but yours totally was. I think.

Once I get the motivation (also known as classes I'm supposed to be paying attention to but don't), I shall write mine. I have a great idea for it. 3nodding

And some of it may actually be factual. Not much, though, because astronomy was my worst subject. xd

Ehehe, that's the only thing school's good for--time to write. That, and the free food. That's not too bad, either, I guess. xp

I love astronomy... But I kinda suck at it. 3nodding

You get free food? gonk Ours costs two bucks a meal!
PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2007 7:40 pm

It's free for her, her dad hooks her up. For us normal people, we get a choice between a variety of non-vegetarian goodies stare and usually you can get a good meal for less than $5.

Two bucks?!?! You're lucky. When our old school had stuff like that it was 3.50, maybe it's 4 now! O.o
