Kichanga found himself treading lightly across the open serenghetti, deeply regretting the lack of cover in the area. Without really realizing it, the wild dog had ventured rather deeper into the Pridelands than he would've liked. He knew it. He could smell the musky scent of lions everywhere. Although, he supposed it could've been worse... he could've wandered onto a more aggressive lion pride's turf... he could've wandered onto the Firekin's lands and gotten himself killed (though he never really cared to set foot in the desert... too hot, and too dry).

Still, you just couldn't be too careful. So he moved slow, and he moved low, and he tried his best to keep a low profile... but he was confident that everything would work out alright. He was always confident. That was his thing. Honestly, if he didn't have his optimism, he didn't have much of anything.

Kaikura was always out and about. He didn't spend time with his family and he didn't have friends to speak of, besides one who had left without notice. But that didn't seem to matter to the strong young lion. Patroling the pridelands had become a habit, when he was testing his strength against strong preybeasts. When he had been little he had gotten tired and never made it all the way around. But now he could, his stamina built up from days of working himself until he slept.

He paused for a moment, shaking his growing mane from his face. There was an unfamiliar scent on the wind. And it wasn't prey, no. Unlike other pridelanders, he had little respect for anyone, let alone strangers. He started off in the direction of the trespasser, his tail swaying restlessly.

Initially, being upwind, Kichanga was unwitting of the unhappy predator stalking his trail. He simply moved along at a steady trot, pausing to lift his head and glance about every few moments to ensure the coast was clear... though he wasn't watching his back as much as he probably should.

Eventually, though, he chanced to glance back, and when he did, he saw movement, and the swishing of a tufted tail.

Lion.

Kich gulped and bit his lip, uncertain of what to do next. Surveying his surroundings, he spied a fairly large rock and darted, huddling up behind it, pulling in his tail and keeping his head low, trying to keep every part of him hidden... though it was hard to resist the temptation to peek. He had to keep his paws over his head just to keep it held down.

Beyond hiding, though, he could only hope that the approaching lion was of a good nature...

Sadly, Kaikura was not of the best of natures. He wasn't of the worth either, but he was hardly what the frightened wild dog had hoped for. After loping on for a while he had caught sight of the canine. When he disappeared suddenly, however, he frowned. Fleeing perhaps? And yet Kura would not put it passed someone to lay down a trick, an assault. He slowed his movements, following the scent instead with narrowed eyes and tense muscles. That wild dog was here somewhere...

Well, wasn't this just great? Now here he was, stuck huddling and hiding like a coward from someone he'd scarcely even seen. Who knows... maybe the fellow was actually really friendly! After all, Kichanga had heard good things about the Pridelands lions.

Still, the wild dog wasn't quite ready to take that risk. Especially not with a lion. Lions were big, tough, powerful creatures that could kill an old dog like Kichanga with one blow, if they wanted to. And Kich didn't feel especially like dying today, if he didn't have to.

But he was not accustomed to waiting and doing nothing. Patience had never been his strong suit, and as it was he couldn't see and could scarcely hear and smell the nearby lion. He wanted to see who had been following him. He wanted to know what he was like. He wanted to see what was going on, and his paws twitched anxiously as he forced himself to wait it out.

Finally, though, his true nature got the better of him and he couldn't take it anymore. Kich released his head and peeked up from behind the rock to get a glimpse of the lion. But the young lion male was a bit closer than the dog had anticipated, and looked none too happy. Kich gulped a bit, smiled sheepishly, and squeaked, "Good afternoon, sir."

Kaikura stopped, his slitted gaze slipping over to the revealed wilddog. He didn't answer the other predator at first, sizing him up. He didn't look like much of a threat. Which was normally enough for Kura. He puffed up a bit with his own pride and confidence of being far more dangerous then this silly beast. "It is afternoon indeed. Do you know where you are?" he asked in a low rumble, half threatening, half amsuement.

Kichanga held his ground, although he felt at certain points that the only think keeping him in place was how tightly he was clinging to the rock. Certainly he scooched back a bit, feeling uncomfortably close to the visibly perturbed lion. Trying to play off his own anxiety (and failing), he let out a nervous little titter and scratched at his ears as a habit. "Huh? Oh... uh... where I am... um... not... specifically," he babbled, "But ah... ah... I DO know that I am somewhere in the vicinity of the Pridelands, yes?"

He displayed what he hoped was his most winning smile... and not his most sheepish. "Oh, the Pridelands. Wonderful place it is you've got here. Really nice. I've heard great things... about the land AND the lions... it's great... really..." He wondered if maybe he should stop rambling, but he couldn't make his mouth shut. That, too, was a nervous habit.
