He never realised how much he'd miss the Pridelands until he'd wandered to the Kusini lands. Red eyes gazed upon the Southlands, the free-roamer's border to the Pridelands. As the dark male stopped in his footsteps, he looked back to his travel companions - Kabichi, whom he'd grown fond of through the trip, that he was feeling a blossoming warmth towards growing, and his uncle Sairin. His uncle... He'd barely been aware he had any family. It almost made him want to go find the rest, find the others that hid. And yet, the homesick feeling he got thinking of the Pridelands kept him back. But he was almost home, and it was almost over.

==========================================

Off in the distance, he could smell it. After so long, it made the old Firekin's heart leap with joy. Even though he was a juvenile when he left, he still remembered. Oh, Finar-si did he remember it. The sand under his paws, between his toes, in his mane and fur... The shift of the sands as one ran, the heat of the sun. He remembered and missed it all, but he was close, so close. He just had to cross the Pridelands, and he'd be home. He sat down, looking to Paki and Khepri, black ears perking up. "We're almost there..."

The snow-white lioness stalked after Shin, remembering the Southlands well. It was here her family had sent her as they died. Here, the border to her home. The lioness paused, raising her head to smell at the air delicately, old and new scents flowing in.

Behind her, the massive form of Sairin came up from behind. He'd never been here, but he did not mind. He was needed. He had porpuse. Ishara's old bone necklace hung upon his neck as he moved, silently following the younger two as he smelled the air every so often, watchful, ever watchful, for Toshiro.

Silvery colored eyes shimmered in the sunlight behind the proficient bangs that hung down before them, sharp but for no real reason at all. They were a double edged blade, blind while his remaining senses were so sharp that he could even feel the two large bodies on either side of him. Paki was large for a lion, larger than a lot of rouges, though not hardly the largest of all time. No, the two lions beside him, the two hulking firekin that were almost the height of gods, they were the largest lions he'd ever met, even larger than his pappi.

Sniffing in with his caramel colored nose, Paki let his fluffy chest expand, almost stopping in his tracks as he closed his unseeing eyes and smiled. This was the smell of the pridelands eh? Was Moyo around here then? Would he soon be able to see his big sister again that he'd been missing ever since she left?

He was so close that it felt like every step changed his life forever, when in truth that had already happened.

Limping a little on her front left leg, Khepri smiled at Bodaway mischeviously and nodded her large red head. She of course hadn't heard a word he'd said due to the large sea-shell headphones on her head that kept out the voices in her head, but she knew what he meant as she'd passed by here on her way to find the accursed Ela' that Boda had proven to be so evil.

Now there was only one thing for her to find, one thing she had to focus on... and that was finding that big black and white fluffball that she'd left at the ocean so many months ago, before she'd met Boda and started on her stalwart journey towards the Ela lands that hadn't accepted her. But she had a promise to keep first to the lion that had probably saved her life, she'd said that she was going to take him to the Firekin lands once more and she had every intention of doing so.

"S'bout time too. Not tha' bein' with a pair o' big strong males ain' fun an all, bu' Ah need some alone time too." Khepri slurred from her fluffy muzzle and grinned playfully at them, knowing that Paki would get that she was only joking around.

Even so.. she could smell the pridelands and knew more than ever that she was closer to the Firekin once more, closer to those evil sands.

Taking a deep breath, the dark adolescent started down the slight slope of the hill they stood upon, white tipped tail curling slightly. His ears folding back, he bristled lightly as he smelled others. But he saw nobody, so assumed they were a distance off and the wind merely carried their scent. It carried the scent of him, as well, of Toshiro, of his father... And what seemed his ward, Kimiko. But a mere glance reminded him of the warmth that stood with him in his journey towards moving out of his father's shadow.

===========================================

A nod of the blood-red lion's head was all the other two got, though he knew the younger wouldn't see it. After a moment, he started on, black nose into the wind and streaked mane blowing like a banner. Glove-marked paws gently swept over the grasses, the mighty Firekin ignoring the prey beasts. He was almost home, they mattered not to him. All that mattered was home, Paki, and thanking Khepri for her help. He glanced at her, tilting his head slightly while walking. "Maybe once we reach the Pridelands, you should head back. I can tell you don't like the Blood too much anymore, and I'll mention nothing of you to them."

Kabi sniffed the air happily. They were almost HOME, even here, amongst a dead smell.

A dead smell. The lioness froze, head jerking up. The ground carried the scent, even after the rains cleansed the land. The scavengers, yess, had since moved the bodies, save a skull.

Kabichi's ears flattened at the skull. It was not small, rather, it was large. Enormous. But familiar. Immediately she bagan backing away, memories almost forgotten rushing forward.

Rogues.

They were surrounded.

Her mother was on the ground as she fled, not looking back to her father or littermates; the rogues had her family... The rogues....

Kabichi suddenly screamed, and began to tear away.

Sairin jerked his head toweards the lioness first, unaware of the memory resurfacing to the fullest, and immediately tore after. The land wasn't safe, and he made a promise. What he didn't expect, however, was that while small, the lioness was faster than the overgrown lion, and she quickly outstripped him.

Shifting his paws a little at the awkwardness of not being able to see the actions of his two 'foster parents', Paki sighed and struck forward quite suddenly, his paws hitting the ground faster and faster as his nose sniffed out any danger that might be before him.

After months and months of being the way he was, Paki was used to it and he was more than capable of running even when others couldn't, because his nose could tell him and warn him of things that the eyes of those spoiled with them would betray. No, Paki's nose and sense of proximity were a better tool for this sort of thing than his eyes ever would have been.

Leaping over a rather large stick that appeared before him, Paki picked up more speed and laughter rang out through the air, his fur blowing back from before his face so the sunlight caught his glittering silver eyes as he ran. It felt nice, felt nice physically and mentally, knowing that here he was going to be home soon. His new home where he'd have his sister and a new life where others might not belittle him for his lack of sight.

"Ah don' think so. Ah told ya tha' Ah'd take yo' back ta the Firekin, blood or no' Ah gotta do it." Khepri said, she wasn't one to slack off or not do her duty when she swore that she would. Of course she was sure that Bodaway would find his way from here, but the simple fact that she had given him her word of leading him there, that kept her moving towards them. Besides, she could always stop on the outskirts of the sand and let him go from there.

"Though Ah do thank ya for no' tellin' none o' 'em. Ah'd 'ate ta have ya thrown ou' cuz ya mentioned mah name ta th' wron' lion, y'know?"

That thought made her feel a little awkward, she had left so abruptly that she wasn't sure who was still her friend, who cared, or even who hated her. She knew Naraka hated her, that went without even saying at all. He had hated her from the time she was just a small cub, now he had to have forgotten all about her, but she didn't forget him or stop hating him for what he did to her or her brother. For how he'd conned her little brother. Oh no.

"Ah'll get ya there Bodaway... bu' afta' tha'... Ah gotta go fin' someone." She smiled, knowing that he'd understand it was someone important.

Blinking in surprise, Shin halted and watched Kabichi run off. When his uncle followed, he had no choice but to chase after, just barely catching up to Sairin. "Kabichi! Kabichi, wait!" What had scared her so much? He hadn't noticed the skull, nor the smell of death.

===============================

Chuckling a little, Bodaway nodded. "Thank you. You are an honorable lioness of your word, Khepri." Gold eyes turned and watched Paki, mindful of the blindness the lion experienced.

He was distracted, though, when he noticed something moving in the distance. He couldn't see clearly, just a shadow. But something about the movements... They were familiar, strikingly familiar. Turning off course and trotting towards the running lion, Bodaway squinted. A memory, fleeting though it was, brushed across his mind, of a tanned lioness, as large as a Firekin, and a feeling of affection. Was it...? Could it be...?

Kabichi's nose flared as the smell of others came in, and she immedaiately swerved right, running rapidly.

Not again... Not again...

Sairin, meanwhile, tore after, paws carrying him as quickly as he could as he unleashed a roar, trying to knock the younger lioness to her senses. Whatever was wrong, running like this was dangerious.

Paki had run so fast that he was already a good length ahead of his comapnions when...

WHAM!

Something ran before him and Paki leaped over it, shocked to find that it was moving so fast that even he hadn't been able to sense or smell it. It was just that fast, just that incredibly fast. As he leapt through the air, Paki realized that he hadn't quite adjusted his body to land only seconds before his nose smashed into the ground with a loud crunch and he lay still, large body sprawled out on it's side limply. The landing itself had sounded hard enough through the air that other ears were sure to have heard it, yet still Paki didn't move, eyes closed and sides rising slower than natural.

"Nah, Ah'm jus' a lioness tha' don' like ta let otha's down s'all." she smiled over at him, tarnished golden eyes shimmering deeply in amuzement before she flicked her ears foreward to watch what Boda saw.

However all that Khepri saw was in slow motion as Paki's face connected with the ground with a sickening crunch and her eyes went wide. The little female never stopped moving once even though Paki hadn't seen her and while he must have smelled her at the last second.. still he managed to leap over her, though his landing was just....

"Paki!" The roar cut through the air from her large muzzle and all of a sudden muscles rippled under sandpaper fine fur and Khepri's enormous body lunged forward to see if he was even still alive. The way he was laying there disturbed her greatly.

Folding his ears back against his uncle's roar, Shin watched in horror as the new lion collided with the ground. He was torn on who to worry about - Kabichi, or this new lion. But he found more to worry about when he heard a new roar from a very large red lioness. Looking over, he was shocked to see how big the other lions were. They looked, even at a distance, bigger than Sairin! "Uncle Sairin, look!"

Doing his best to intercept the running lioness, Bodaway was forced to use some of his weight to try and at least knock her down. She could hurt her self very easily, and while him knocking her down WOULD hurt, running smack into a tree or rock at that velocity had to hurt worse. His next concern was Paki - The Firekin had not missed the sound of the smaller male hitting the ground.

Kabi kept going, panicking, when the larger lion slammed into her, knocking her to the ground and rustling her senses. It hurt, she could feel her leg slicing open as she landed, and her wound snapped her out of it as she jerked her head up to face the much larger male. The lioness gasped-- the lion was enormous-- and started moving to her feet when Sairin unleashed a roar at the other male, putting on a burst of speed before sliding to a stop, sighting the wounded male. He stood as tall as he could, and growled at the large male, bristling.

"What, lion, do you want with the female you just knocked down!?"

Sairing didn't trust the strangers to actually HELP.

Oblivious to the world around him for a long time, Paki's head swirled in pain and agony, his nose not working and his other senses all out of wack as his brain felt like it had been dislodged. Never once had this happened to him, all the times he'd fallen on his face he'd never once lost the ability to smell or feel.

Maybe this was what being 'brained' felt like?

Snorting blood from his nose and slowly shoving himself to his feet, blood poured from his nose for a few moments, staining his long fur crimson to match his companions. His head of course felt dizzy, but Paki couldn't help it, he knew that something was going on around him that involved Bodaway and Khepri as he'd heard both of their roars mix with the roar of another.

Pricking his chocolate colored ears forward at the new growling, Paki stood up and stumbled over in the direction he'd heard it from, his eyes never moving, though his still running nose sniffed as hard as it could to smell Bodaway and Khepri. He knew that they were somewhere close and the growl hadn't sounded like his dad's or his mom's. Glaring in the general direction from beneath his thick mane, Paki started to bristle savagly.

There was fear in the air that was emminating from a smaller body that he could sense nearby. It wasn't a cub but it wasn't an adult... still, all the same there was fear in the air and Paki figured that all the growling and snarling wasn't helping.

Tarnished gold eyes watched as Boda knocked the other female over with ease and Khepri put her enormous body between the new male and her friend, her eyes blazing and her short fur on end in every direction. The Blood boiled beneath her fur at the sight of her friend laying on his side unmoving and it seemed to make her even angrier with every second that she saw it.

"We don' wan' anythin' ta do with 'er. She' caused our frien' ta bust 'is nose open though. Ain' she gonna say she's sorry." Khepri growled, her deep voice punctuating every word dangerously as her her tail swished back and forth.

The way Khepri had placed herself put her square in the middle of them all, keeping the new male from Bodaway as well as Bodaway from him and the younger female at the same time to force everyone into a sort of stalemate for the moment. The only one that she couldn't do that for was Paki, who was slowly walking forward from behind the newcome male with his blind eyes blazing and his fur slowly bristling.

Hunching up her shoulders, lest she have to leap to save Paki from being swung at by the new male, Khepri's body seemed to shrink a little, her muscles rolling under her fur again almost warningly. This was a dangerous set up, but hopefully there was a way to fix it all and it depended solely on the little female's next words if she even had the guts to say them after her apparent fear of Boda.

Sliding to a halt, Shin looked between Kabichi and the obviously injured lion. But his growing loyalty to the lioness drove him to hurry to her side, checking her over. "Kabichi, are you alright?!"

Sides heaving slightly, Bodaway stood in a relaxed yet ready manner, watching the monochromatic adult male. "For her to not smack into a tree at such a velocity." He nodded over to Paki, ears flicking in his mane. "He fell because he did not smell her soon enough, and if a blind lion can be harmed that badly, imagine how much she would be hurt if she'd run into a tree."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 05, 2007 1:39 pm

Sairin snorted, slowly moving over to his charges while continuing to watch the other lions, making certain to keep a wide path.

Kabichi shivered, and leaned against Shin.

"I'm OK.... Just a bad memory.."

Her entire body quaked, and she eyed the new lions, now coherant. To be frank, she'd no idea someone had tripped, but the sight of three rogueish looking lions set her on edge again. She attempted to fluff up and look big, just in case, but she was terrified. The only lions close to that size she'd ever known had been her mother.

It took a group to take down and kill her mother.

Blushing at how bluntly Bodaway put his inadaquecies that still remained, Paki slowly sunk to the ground and padded at his nose with a chocolate tipped paw, a blush settling unhappily over his nose and cheeks. Of course he hadn't meant to actually trip over the little female and here he'd thought he'd done a good job of dodging her by leaping in the air. It was only his landings that needed working on after all.

"M'fine." Paki muttered beneath his breath. Though currently it seemed that didn't matter to Bodaway, who was simply having it out with the others purely on the principals and had forgotten about both himself and Khepri for the moment. Not that he minded, the less he was focused on the better in his opinion, especially after making such a fool of himself.

Stepping back as Boda started in on the others, Khepri simply let him handle it, as his voice and words weren't so broken and fragmented as hers, not to mention the sheer force of his words made her wonder.

Flicking her tarnished gaze over to the shuddering female that had caused all this trouble she frowned a little. Khepri was normally a nice and loving lioness, but when her family, her friends, her loved ones, were threatened she became a raging monster with rippling fur that was almost impossible to stop. She could only guess that this was what she appeared to this small and colorful female.

"Yo're alrigh' yes?" Khepri asked loudly enough for the female to hear and get the indication that she was indeed saying it for her ears.
