PART I Serena walked slowly through the gates of the village. Her murky eyes taking in her surroundings. This was the first time she was aloud out past the great wooden walls. The crescent moon shone down on her face and she tilted her head to gaze at it. “O, Hekate…” The words came from her lips but stopped as they always did. She had never gotten farther than that. She sighed and hurried along. She had had to beg the village leaders to let her leave the village tonight. She would return after a week. She hoisted the bag higher on her back and continued to walk. Her cells tingled as she neared a clearing. She set the bag down at the edge and removed her leather sandals. As she put one pale foot into the clearing the moon seemed to light up her surroundings. She walked slowly to the center and stood silently, head tilted to the side as if listening for a voice. ‘What am I waiting for?’ She wondered. Suddenly a breeze picked up. It blew her short brown hair around her face and she lifted her head again. “O, Hekate, listen to my cry. Fill me with the power of the night that is mine.” Her eyes widened in surprise. She had said the entire thing!
Suddenly a blue light filled in the clearing and wrapped her in it’s soft glow. She closed her eyes as a warmth spread through her body. She smiled. Suddenly her mind began to feel as though someone was tickling it. Her eyes shot open as a searing pain went through her skull. She cried out and fell to the ground. The light increased as did the pain. Suddenly her hair became long and silver. Her already pale skin became white. A voice entered her head, ‘I will give you your power, you are now a creature of the dark.’ Serena trembled. Suddenly the light was gone. Taking the pain with it. She ran her fingers through her now long hair and gulped. What would the villagers think? Would they burn her like a witch? She looked up at the moon. “Good thing you’re waxing.” She said aloud. “Maybe then I’ll see what my power is really like.” She then laid down in the center of the clearing and let sleep overcome her.
Serena awoke a few days later. She sat up and ran her fingers through her hair. “Almost Midday…” She rummaged through her pack for some food. She found a piece of stale bread and some salted meat, cheese and fruit. She ate quickly and washed them down with water from a nearby spring. Sensing that no one was around she stripped out of her dirty dress and rinsed it in the crisp clear water. Then she hung it over a branch to dry. She then plunged into the water herself. It was so cold it took her breath away. Soon she got used to it and enjoyed her bath. Suddenly a twig snapped. She panicked and ducked under the surface. She could hear mumbles and voices. Men’s voices. She dove to a deeper part of the spring. Suddenly she saw men’s legs come into the water. An idea popped into her head. She began using her hand to stir up the mud on the bottom. Her lungs pleaded for air. A fish she was not! Soon she could not see anything herself. And by the sounds coming from the men, they couldn’t either. She felt along for the man’s leg and grabbed it. She could feel his surprise. Then she bit down.
The man screamed and kicked her. He had knocked the remaining air from her lungs. She gasped and water filled her lungs. She arose choking and gasping. The men stared at her. Her long silver hair tumbled down her back, nearly to her knees. It fell over her shoulders and hid her breasts. She was still waist deep in murky water. “Give me my clothes.” She commanded coldly. They handed her the still damp dress and she put it on. “Are you a river spirit?” Asked one of the men. They were strangers to her. They all had soft brown curls or blond, wavy locks. Unlike the men of her village, who wore almost no clothes and cared little for physical hygiene, these men were well dressed and smelled of soap. Some were still on horses and wore armor, with swords at their sides. “Your accent is strange.” She said. “Yours is unearthly.” They replied. She stepped slowly out of the water. “I am no spirit, water, earth, fire or air. I am a servant of Hekate.”
They stepped back startled. Only one came closer. His hair was black and his eyes as blue as the deepest part of the sea. His facial features were firm and harsh. “I am Prince Juliano. I am one of the heirs to the kingdom of the four floating castles.” She met his gaze. Suddenly she felt a click. Her mind went into his and began to search to see if he was lying. He was not. “Your highness.” Something prevented her from bowing. Instead she simply nodded her head. “Come with us to our kingdom. I wish to present you to my brother. We have been fighting continually and giving him a maiden that I have not used but want….” Anger filled her as his eyes walked up and down her body. She reached out to slap him. A guard grabbed her wrist and one began to bind her. “Let me go! Hekate will curse your family!!” She shrieked. “She will make your name cursed above all!! It will be another for-!” Her sentence was caught off as a bitter cloth was tied around her mouth. They tied her feet with coarse rope and threw her onto the back of a supplies wagon. She twisted and turned but it was almost useless to fight against the ropes. ‘Someone, please! Help me!’ She was met with silence. She wept bitterly the entire way. When they would offer her food or water she would turn her head. Her hair was beginning to grow short and become darker. When they finally had her in the castle of Prince Juliano’s brother it was brown, curly and short. She smiled in satisfaction. “Witch!” Yelled Juliano. He struck her with the back of his hand and sent her flying. She picked herself off the ground and touched the spot of blood near her mouth. “You’ve tricked me! I told my brother that I was bringing him a goddess!” She only smiled up at him. “I would not give you the satisfaction of such a feat.” She whispered. His hand met her face again and she sprawled on the ground, blood trickling down her chin and from a new wound near her temple. Apparently her head had decided to play with a rock. “Clean her up. Bring her to Eli. I will still give him the woman. Even -I- no longer want that wench in my bed.” With a swish of his robes he was gone.
She walked with the ladies maids to the bath and gave them her filthy clothes. They scrubbed her with lilac soap and poured warm water over her head. She stared blankly at the wall in front of her. Let them do their work. It was not their fault that a pig was their lord. They dressed her in a pale white gown with onyx stones along the sleeves, hem and collar. She touched the tiara on her head and frowned. “Why am I wearing this? Get it off.” They only shook their heads and fastened a circle of onyx stones around her neck. “I am not some gift that you cover with ribbons and gems!” They ignored her and began to comb out her hair. She glowered silently, sure that if she removed the jewels they would be forced back on her. Finally they were finished. They nodded and smiled in approval. She took one look at her reflection, and burst into tears.
She was brought into a large dining room. There were three other people in the room. On one side of the table sat Juliano. He was wearing all deep blue and navy. ‘He must represent water. That’s why they asked if I was a water spirit.’ Beside him sat a woman dressed in a lighter blue. Her hair was a sunshiny gold and her eyes were like the clearest sky. She wore a single pearl in her crown. She would have been very pretty but the scowl that marked her face made her almost unbearable to look at. She appeared more like a dried up sculpture than a woman. On the opposite side of the table was a woman dressed completely in green and brown. She had lush brown wavy locks that spilled about her shoulders and back. Her cheeks were a rosy pink and the smile on her face looked much like an accessory that Serena guessed went with every outfit. Beside her were two empty seats. She was the only one who rose to greet her. The other two gave her a look of contempt and turned to each other to whisper secrets. “Hello. I am Princess Lythia. That is my sister Aries and my brother Juliano. My brother Eli is missing for now I’m afraid.” The emerald in her crown was stunning. Serena curtsied. “I am Serena. Now servant of Hekate and Selene.” Her hair was turning lighter and beginning to grow longer. She realized that night was falling. Tonight must be a full moon. Lythia guided her to a chair and they sat down. Suddenly the doors burst open and a flustered but happy man rushed in. “There was a large bonfire festival at my corner of the kingdom so I had to…” His voice trailed off. Serena almost gasped when she looked at him. He had flaming red hair and a blanket of freckles across the bridge of his nose. His hazel eyes were almost orange. Everyone stood when he entered, as was the custom with royalty. He sat to the left of Serena and smiled at her. She could feel heat spreading to her cheeks. “I am Prince Eli…I feel as though we have met before…” Suddenly his eyes locked with hers. Then she remembered…
She had been young. Maybe only twelve or thirteen. Even then she prayed for power and control. Excitement. She had met a boy with fire red hair who had been stung by a wasp. It’s remains had been smoking when she had looked at it. “Boy, what is your name?” She had said. The boy had smiled and said, “Just call me Boy.” She had agreed and they had spent the entire day together. At the end of the day she had said. “I like you.” He said, “I like you too.” Then they had kissed. It had started as a friendly kiss but because of it their friendship took off faster than a bolt of lightning. They had met everyday for the next few years. He calling her goddess and her calling him boy. One day they had exchanged their real names. And he had said, “I am a prince. Our love could never be allowed. You must never tell anyone.” She had agreed. The next day she had been told that the prince was moving to a new castle. She was devastated. As was he.
They turned away quickly. Crimson spreading over her face like a fan. Her hair was once more long and silver. She heard Aries and Lythia gasp. “I am Serena…I was once a commoner. Now I am a servant to Selene and Hekate.” Se looked at Eli when she said this. Eli stood abruptly and grabbed her arm. “Come with me. Brother, I thank you for this gift with every fiber of my being.” Then he dragged her to his chamber. As the door shut behind them Juliano smirked. “I knew he’d want a wench.” Then he began to eat.
Eli stood facing Serena. He trembled. So did she. “It’s you. I…I thought I would never see you again.” They stepped closer to each other. He removed her tiara and she removed his crown. “Eli…you are…you are the one he was giving me to. Now I know why neither Selene nor Hekate would save me.” They embraced. “Eli…Boy….” He covered her words with a kiss. Passion burned through her like wildfire as he slipped a ring on her finger. “Serena…my goddess.” He blew out the lamp and darkness closed around them.
Serena awoke unsure of where she was. Then she felt Eli’s soft breath tickling her ear and his strong arms around her waist. She smiled. Birds chirped outside the window and the sun poured on her face. “Eli, it’s morning.” She whispered. He groaned. “Already?” She nodded. “I know it seems early but we should be up by now.” He sighed and kissed her forehead. She wrapped a sheet around herself and picked up her heavy gown. She pulled it on. He stood up and dressed as well. He put the tiara on her head and she put on his crown. Then, arm in arm, they walked to breakfast. The others were already there. They watched as Eli pulled out her chair for her and she kissed his cheek. They were shocked at how informally they acted. Serena was ecstatic. She even smiled at Juliano. Eli held her hand under the table. She smiled at him and he at her. Aries cleared her throat. “Are you going to make her into your personal servant or toss her out now?” She asked, a slight smirk playing on her pale lips. “If you do not want her then I could make her into a dancer. She could dance at our center festivals.” Her eyes flickered over Serena, a corner of her mouth pulling back as if she had swallowed sour milk. Eli’s face flushed with anger and it was all he could do to not slap her. “How dare you speak of her that way!” He exclaimed, standing up suddenly. His chair fell over backwards and his plate flew across the table. Serena, Juliano and Aries flinched. Lythia just sighed. “Calm down brother. She is only trying vex you.” Eli snatched up Serena’s hand again and held it firm. “For your information, sister,” He said the word like it was acid on his tongue. “We will be married before the end of the month.” Aries sat still as stone. A blank, dumb expression on her face. Juliano almost choked but Lythia smiled. “I’m glad for you Eli.” Serena grinned. Eli and her ran from the dining hall. “Do you mean it? Married?” She asked quietly.
“Of course I do! Juliano and Aries will never understand love for their hearts and their feelings are as cold as the elements they control!!!” He roared. She put a hand on his arm. “Eli,” She said quietly. “You’re temper right now is as fiery as the element you control.” Her words must have been soothing because he calmed. “Take me to your kingdom. I do not like being in the neutral one.” He swept her up into his arms and she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Yes, my lady.” And then, he ran with her, out of the castle, to the awaiting carriage, that would carry them to their future.
The wedding was, unfortunately, two months later. It was probably the grandest wedding in centuries. Serena requested it to be held on the night of a new moon so her hair would be as vibrant as possible. She had it swept up into a bun with red rose buds tucked in. A ruby and diamond tiara rested lightly on her head and a necklace of rubies circled her throat. Diamond earrings reached for her shoulders. Her gown was as smooth as silk, the maroon material stood vibrantly against her skin. The train was decorated so heavily with gems it took two serving girls to carry it properly. She ran her hands down the material. “I wonder how Eli is dressed…” She murmured.
Eli was wondering the same about her as he was put into a deep maroon suit. An orange cape hung behind him and was clasped with a deep red ruby. His golden crown was gleaming. He wore a pair of shiny black boots that made clomping noises when he walked. (He liked the clomping noises). As he walked to the alter to await his bride he smiled to himself and remembered the words he had spoken to her when he was a boy. ‘Our love could never be allowed.’ Now here he was marrying her! His breath caught in his throat when he laid eyes on her. Her beauty was even more stunning than before. She smiled behind her thin lace veil. In only a few moments they would be married. Then they would be together forever.

PART II Serena and Eli lived in his castle and she was permitted to do whatever she pleased. She enjoyed strolling in the fire gardens and reading one of the many books that haunted the libraries grand shelf’s. Sometimes she was visited by Hekate. She and Serena would chat nonchalantly about trivial things and also about her powers that she was coming to have. She could heal faster now, and she was able to comfort those who people had thought were vicious. Hekate had promised that she had an important task to overcome and she would not die until it was complete.
Serena and Eli had been married for a little over four months when Serena became ill. The mornings was when she was worst. In the afternoons and nights she was fine. The doctors could find nothing wrong with her except for a change in appetite and how long she would sleep. Eli was extremely worried and there were charred items throughout the castle from when he had suddenly made something burst into flame. On one of these occasions Serena was with him. “I don’t understand it!” Eli shouted. “There are no medicines, tricks or cures for you! Supposedly you are healthy but every morning you spend at least an hour over the toilet!” A curtain suddenly caught fire and she threw a pitcher of water on it to extinguish it. “Eli, darling, I’m sure that all is well. Lythia will be coming any moment now and you know how good of healer she is.” She patted his arm affectionately. “She will know what’s the matter.”
Lythia arrived an hour later. She and Serena embraced happily. “It’s been five months since I last saw you!” Lythia exclaimed. Serena smiled then frowned. “I’m sorry to hear about the attack on your kingdom. Do you know who planned it yet?” Eli kissed his sister fondly on the cheek before rushing off to throw verbal insults at the doctors again. “What’s the matter with him?” Asked Lythia. “Is everything alright?” Serena motioned for her to follow her. They walked to the library where she bolted the doors behind them. “I’ve been rather sick lately and the doctors can find no cure. It is driving Eli out of his mind that he can’t help me. I‘ve also become much more tired and I‘m gaining extra weight although my appetite has not increased.” She sank into a chair. Lythia’s eyes widened. “You mean you can’t tell? Well, the fire kingdom is more about fighting than healing…” Serena gave her a puzzled look. “What do you mean?” Lythia knelt beside her and placed a hand on her belly. “You are going to be a mother.” Serena brought a hand to her mouth. “A mother? I am scarcely twenty years old.” Lythia smiled. “Then it is high time. My mother was married and had me when she was sixteen. It’s nothing strange.” She helped Serena from her chair. “Come. Let’s go tell Eli.”
Eli took the news well. First the table cloth caught fire. Then the bouquet in the center of the table. After those were doused he was simply grinning. “A father! I’m going to be a father!” Serena smiled. “I was worried that you wouldn’t like the news.” He laughed. “Not like it? This is the best day of my life!” He hugged her. She laughed and pushed him away slightly. “Be careful. We don’t want to hurt the baby.” She put a hand on her belly. He smiled and placed his hand over hers. “We’re going to be a real family.” He said smiling.
A week later she felt the baby kick. Three months later she was in the library when a sharp pain went through her back. “Ooh.” She squeezed her eyes shut against the pain. “Darling, mommy needs her rest.” She didn’t feel he pain again until that evening during dinner. Her fork was halfway to her mouth when suddenly the pain shot through her again. “Oh!” She put a hand on her bulging stomach. Eli looked over with concern. “What is it Serena? Is the baby kicking worse?” Lythia stood up quickly. “I can tell it’s not that. Come Serena. We have to get you to a bed straight away.” Serena followed her. The shots of pain were quick, close together and like daggers in her back. She moaned as Lythia helped her down the hall to the medical wing. She sank into the bed gratefully. Only a second later another one hit. “We’re going to have a baby very soon.” Lythia said smiling. “I’ll go retrieve Eli from the dining hall.” She turned to leave and was almost knocked over by him. “No need. I’m here.” He sat down beside Serena and clasped her hand in his. She looked at him in pain. “Lythia says the baby is coming.” He kissed her forehead. “I know precious. I know.”
An hour later, Serena was popped up in the bed with a pillow at her back. She pushed again. Her hair was damp with sweat. It was silver now and the moon rising in view of the window pronounced it‘s color even more. Eli was holding her hand and she was squeezing his. “Now breathe Serena.” Lythia ordered. Serena took a deep breath. “When will this child finally arrive?” She gasped. “Now push!” Serena pushed again. “I can see the baby!” Lythia exclaimed happily. Serena screamed as the baby slid from her body into Lythia’s awaiting arms. The baby, a girl, flailed her tiny arms and hollered. Serena, exhausted, smiled at her newborn daughter then her eyes widened. “Lythia,” She whispered worriedly. “Should I still feel contractions?” She squeezed Eli’s hand again and began to push. Lythia handed the newborn to an awaiting attendant who rushed from the room to get her cleaned up. “Relax Serena. Everything is fine.” Serena nodded and pushed again. “There’s another baby coming!” Eli jumped. “Twins?! Are you quite sure?” He left her side for a minute to see for himself. Serena grasped the blankets and held back another scream as a second baby came into the world. She leaned back on the pillow and closed her eyes. “It’s a boy Serena, a healthy little boy. What are you going to name him? Serena? Serena?” Lythia’s voice was drifting farther and farther away. She could faintly hear Eli calling her name as well and a baby crying. But she was so tired…and soon everything had drifted away. And at last it was dark.
Sunlight spilled over Serena’s face. She blinked sleepily as she yawned and stretched. What had happened? Suddenly she sat up. “My children! Where are my…” She looked around the room. It was different than the room she had given birth to the twins in. She was in a large, oak, canopy bed. A fireplace crackled across the room. There was a smell of lavender incense in the air. She could see a tree, which looked dead, outside the window. She pushed the large, warm, comforter back and put her feet on the floor. Suddenly her eyes darted to the blanket. Green? She fingered it. There were delicate designs of flowers and plants embroidered on it. She suddenly realized it was…cold. It hadn’t been cold just last night. Had it? She wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and walked over to the window. “Snow!” She exclaimed. She opened the window and a gust of sharp, cold wind surrounded her. She quickly shut the window. She turned around confused. “But…just last night…” Suddenly a servant, clothed in green, came in. She looked startled to see Serena up but then rushed over excitedly. “You’ve finally awakened!” Serena gave her a puzzled look. “What do you mean? I’ve only been asleep for the night. Haven’t I?” The servant led her back to the bed. “Wait here. I’ll return with Lady Lythia and your husband.” Serena went back under the comforter. Grateful for the warmth. Lythia and Eli burst in. Serena almost gasped. Eli had the beginnings of a mustache and beard. Lythia looked exhausted. “Darling! You’re finally awake!” Eli rushed to her and hugged her as tight as he could. She pulled away finally. “What happened? Eli, how long have I been asleep?” She moved over in the large bed to make room for him. He laid beside her, tears in his eyes. “You’re frightening me.” She whispered. Lythia sat on the chair next to the bed and gave her a tired smile. “You frightened us Serena.” Eli kissed her.
“Eli stop it. Tell me what’s going on. Why is it snowing? Where am I? And how long have I been asleep?!” She exclaimed. Lythia sighed. “I will answer your questions in order, one, it is snowing because it is the middle of winter, two you are in my kingdom, the kingdom of the earth. I brought you here because my kind are healers. And three…” She took a deep breath. “Three, you have been asleep for almost two years.”
Serena’s eyes widened. “Two years? You cannot possibly be serious!!” She looked to Eli. “Tell me this is some sort of sick joke! Eli…where are our children? What happened to them? If you’re serious then our children are growing up without me and I want to know where they are.” Eli smiled and stroked her hair. “They’re being brought here as we speak. They were sleeping. You gave me an awful fright. I thought I had lost you.” She touched his cheek. “There’s no need to cry. I’m fine now You can never lose me.” He kissed her again and she let him. Finally he pulled away. Serena gazed into his eyes. “Tell me exactly what happened.” And they did.
Apparently, Serena had not had the strength to give birth to the twins. She had been sick with a cold only the past week and she had not been getting enough sleep. She should have died then and there but, she had simply slipped into a deep sleep. It had pretty much been a coma. Lythia had cared for her for as long as she could while she was in the fire kingdom but she did not have the tools she needed. Serena had been moved to the earth kingdom only three weeks after she had given birth to the twins. The children, whom Eli had named Jacqueline and Wallace , had drifted to sleep not long after their mother did and slept for the three weeks before they came to the earth kingdom. At that time they awakened.
Lythia paused while food was brought in. Serena was extremely hungry but found she could barely choke down a few bites of melon or swallow any of the cold chocolate that she was given. She politely set it on the table and laid beside Eli. She pressed herself against his chest and clung to him. He curled himself around her and she smiled. Suddenly she heard the door open and two servants hesitantly came in. “My Lady, you requested that the twins be brought in?” With a cry of delight Serena leapt from the bed. She grasped the closest child, Wallace, and covered him with kisses. He giggled in delight, his dark eyes sparkling in amusement. “I’m your mother…” She wept and continued to hug him and cover him in kisses. Jacqueline began to fuss and Serena swept her into her arms as well. “My children…” She kissed them and continued to hug them as she brought them over to the bed where Eli still lay. She put the twins on the bed and Wallace crawled to his father. It was clear that they both knew who their parents were. Jacqueline refused to leave her mothers arms. Every time Eli would reach for her she would burry her face in her mothers neck. Serena lay beside Eli and stroked her daughter’s back. “What else happened Lythia? I want to know.” Lythia was in the middle of moving a vase of orchids closer to the window. She set it down and walked over to the bed.
“Well, after we brought you here, two sisters constantly came to visit you. They never said their names. They would simply come in this room, at night all the time, and then they would open the window and sit on either side of you. Holding your hand. Every time they would go you would seem better so I would allow them to come. They never told anyone their names or spoke at all. Only the short one with blond hair. She would greet the servants and ask me about your progress. The dark haired one only cried silently and would kiss your forehead before they left.” She picked up a blanket she had obviously been sewing. “That’s really all that happened. For twenty long months you’ve been lying here. We had just about given up hope…” A tear fell onto the blanket. “But when Juliano and Aries came to pay their respects…almost happily…” She gave Serena a watery smile. “That’s when I knew you would live. You would never ” She folded the blanket and set it on the chair. “And now you’ve finally awakened. Now, would you like to eat something for us? You haven’t eaten anything in almost two years.” She smiled and stood. “I’m going to go announce that you’re better and ready to go home.” With that she swept from the room.
Serena and Eli laid silently for a few moments and watched the twins tumble about on the bed. Serena slipped her hand into Eli’s and squeezed. “Darling, I think I know who it was that came to visit me…” She put her opposite hand across his chest. “It was Hekate and Selene. They promised I wouldn’t die until my important task was complete…” She closed her eyes and sighed. “I love you Eli.” She whispered. The twins crawled between their parents and laid down. Wallace stuck his thumb in his mouth and Jacqueline did the same. Soon, their deep even breathing could be heard and Eli smiled. “Dearest, look how sweet they look. Dearest?” He panicked for a moment when she didn’t answer. She opened her eyes and smiled at him. “Don’t fret love…I’m fine.” She gave him a small kiss on the cheek and was soon asleep. Eli smiled and stroked her hair. “Rest well love.” He whispered. When Lythia came in a few moments later to inform them that Juliano and Aries wished to speak with them as soon as possible, she saw the small family sleeping peacefully together and smiled. It could wait.
