Being a parent was still, admittedly, new to Jiza. She wasn't sure how much she would have enjoyed the first phase of parenting, had it not been for the cubs. Being denbound for no reason was never a good way to live. But she had put up with it, because there had been nothing else for her to do for the four newborn cubs. Had it not been for the overwhelming love she felt for those four tiny little bundles of fur, she would never have been able to keep herself from leaping away into the sunlight.

Now, the cubs were no longer blind or deaf, and they had become quite rambunctious within the den. It was getting a bit small for the rowdiness of four cubs, especially Gharadi, who seemed to suffer from some sort of hyperactive disorder. It only made her mother enjoy her antics all the more, though.

But today. Today was the day for another first. It would be the cubs' first time out of the den. The time had come, Jiza was sure. So she rose from where she had been lying against the wall, and slowly made her way out of the den. The cubs would follow on their own accord.

The father had admitedly been nervous about this day. Even though the seemed healthy, the cubs were quite small. At least, compared to anything he had ever seen. Despite Jiza's reassurance that they were quite hardy, he couldn't help but think they were going to break the moment they stepped out of the safety of the den. Not that the den was truely any safer when it came to tripping and such things that might actually break a cub, but for Juke there seemed to be a magical protection bubble around it, making sure that nothing bad happened. Out here, though, in the real world... It was so easy for something to happen. An adult lion didn't have much to fear besides starvation and thirst, but a cub was a completely different story. Hyenas occasionally picked them off, along with all of the other 'enemies' of lions. Seeing as a youngster was defenseless, Juke was borderline paranoid that something was going to happen. For that reason, he was going to stand gaurd and watch the entire time.

Taking advantage of his slight height, Laszlo charged ahead of the litter, tailing his mother by nearly a pace. Of course, where the lioness was merely walking, he was practically galloping. He wanted so badly to see the outside world, to hear it. The den was all he and his siblings new, and its music was getting a little old a bit fast. He had learned quickly that if he tapped his paws at different times, he could alter the sound somewhat, but the dirt muffled everything. For some reason, he assumed that there was less dirt in the regular world and more things to make music. Plus, there was simple curiosity. He wasn't a very rambunctious cub or anything, and didn't usually get that curious about things, but his young mind couldn't help. Everytime his father came home with a meal, he imagined some vast world with magnificent colors and a symphony of sounds. Of course, it was a little over extravegant, but he wasn't disappointed.

When he was out of the shadow of the den mouth, the scents and bright light assualted his senses, temporarily blinding him. He stumbled around, trying to see. The dim enviroment of the den was becoming more and more appealing as he blinked around all the white, trying to make out the figures of his parents and siblings. After several moments of struggling, he gave up, simply flopping on the odd ground beneath him, surrending to the fact he wasn't going to be able to see just yet. Whatever was under him poked at his belly. It was mildly uncomfortable, but he figured he'd have to get used to it. As he waited for sight to return, he noticed something incredible. When sight disappeared, the music grew louder. Or perhaps it was simply that the music outside was louder? He couldn't know for certain. Whatever the case, an entirely new song was vibrating in his ears. He tapped his tail to it slowly, still gazing about even though he couldn't actually see.

((Yay! ))

It was different. VERY different. In fact, what had begun as a terrific idea suddenly began to seem less and less appealing. The white light grew closer, blinding the golden eyed cub as she tried to keep up with her brother and mother. It soon became a battle of wills. . . . Curiosity burned within the little, grey-furred girl but logic stopped her. . .

She didn't know what was out there.

The den was comforting - she knew what was in the den. She knew her sister and brothers scents, understood the locations where mother and father could be. Everything had its place, everything was where it should be. . .

And yet, despite her baby 'need-to-know' instinct drew her after her siblings, her heart feared. The closer she approached the slower her footsteps became. Ears pricked, searching for familiar sounds, the little one just didn't know what to do. . .

Where was Momma? Did she stay within the den or did she follow? Holding up the line, slamming on the breaks before she let herself out in the absolutely massive unknown, Jumuu gave a whimper and cry for reassurance. Why had her mother run off so fast? Why hadn't she waited? Silver-tipped tail flicking, the little lioness dropped to her belly and waited.

Were her other siblings going to go too? Would they all leave her alone inside? The shy little one mewed her fear, tail swishing in annoyance. Curling up, she waited to see what her siblings would do and if she really would be abandoned by all. Where was Daddy when you needed some comfort and strength?

Why did they all have to leave!

Unlike Laszlo, Jumuu wasn't feeling so confident. In fact, the more she thought about it, the less and less she liked the idea at all. The den was dark and safe. . . .

Why did this new world feel different?

Through half of the first part of the exploration, the first 'coming out', one of the four was unconscious. Not exactly soundly sleeping though. A dark green tail flicked back and forth randomly, sometimes stopping for a moment to rest on an equally as green small thigh, other times waving in the air like a flag, front paws flashing around like-wise, as though the young lioness was chasing something in the vast expanse of her dreams. Of course, if it was one of Gharadi's dreams, no-one could be sure. But they'd receive a full account once she regained consciousness of course, when she found the attention span to string words together, the energetic young cub could chat for hours.

But the pitter-patter of familiar footsteps and the rhythms that beat and hummed inside her head left their usual close vicinity, she stirred. "Gurrrafle-" But the incoherent sleeping mumble associating with waking too early for one's personal taste was disrupted with one scan of silver eyes around the comfy den. Everyone was....gone? That was odd. Well, almost everyone, but that was beside the point. Her family's scent was leaving the den, going outside, and not just mum's or dad's, her brother and sister's too, though one lingered. This mystery was just too baffling for her to comprehend, or of course, pass up. So rousing herself to her paws, young Gharadi padded forwards, opening her jawls momentarily to reveal a flash of baby-teeth as she yawned, moving towards the exit.

"Jumuu? What're ya doing here? Where's mum and papa? Where's Laszlo? What ha-" the cub stopped her speech abruptly, eyes widening and ears flicking upwards to show obvious curiousity as she looked into the bright, blinding light. So pretty, yet, despite the need to squint, she couldn't stop staring. So, she stood beside her sister, looking into the strange light that'd appeared, seeming to swallow up her parents and her big brother, and, herself if she only padded into the vast unknown. A whisper of wind past through, and new, strange scents tickled her sensitive green nose. What was out there? "Whazzat?"

Though the three of his siblings, his brother at the head, had fairly charged toward the opening of the den, Ronan held back. What... what was out there? He didn't want to know. He had never shared his siblings' dreams of seeing the outside world for what it truly was. As long as he had his mother's description, he was fine. But... where was she?

Jiza had left the den without her youngest son quite realizing it - he had been far too involved with watching Gharadi thrashing about in her sleep - and now he was caught up in a whirlwind of confusion. Where was she?! Ronan stumbled after Gharadi, determined not to be left behind. He wasn't staying alone done here if everyone was gone. What if they all simply... left without him?

He lingered about slightly behind his two sisters, who were at present blocking his way out. He would have loved to just stay in the den, but his wish to be with his parents far surpassed that. "Aren't you going?" He asked, nudging Gharadi before him, as he spoke in his usual soft tone. It was almost musical, which was ironic if one took into consideration his complete lack of an ear for music.

Jiza took up a seat beside Juke, who was, judging by the look on his face, completely terrified that one of his babies would break at any second. The green lioness had no such worries. She had realized, by now, that they were quite tough enough to handle the immediate world surrounding their den, even Ronan.

Watching as they tumbled and stumbled about in the sudden light. It had taken her a while to adjust to the light again, an she was sure it would take the cubs longer to get used to the brightness that they had previously never experienced. As she had expected, Laszlo came charging toward the open air first. She almost laughed aloud at the little cub's antics, as he flopped defeatedly onto the ground.

Oh, the joys of parenthood.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 04, 2007 6:17 pm

Juke wasn't exactly the best parent in the world, so when he saw that three of his cubs stalled instead of jumping right out, he went to investigate. It most certainly wasn't the best way to teach the little ones their independence, but he hadn't really thought of that. Dropping the idea that the cubs would break, he tossed a glance to the blinded Laszlo and moved to the mouth of the den, peering in at his two daughters and other son. It seemed the hold up was his little grey girl, Jumuu. Even though he wasn't supposed to be picking favorites, he couldn't help but be drawn to his two daughters, both so different yet so similar. Where Gharadi had more spunk than he thought possible for a girl her age, Jumuu was somewhat shy and cautious. He smiled down at the pair, and nodded warmly to Ronan. There was something odd about that little blue male, but he had yet to put his paw on it. "What's wrong, sweetheart?" Crouching as to be on level with the grey cub, he looked slightly worried. Was she hurt? What could possibley be the matter? If she was already broken, there was no way any of them would surivive in the real world.

Slowly, almost unbearbley slow, Laszlo's sight came. He blinked when everything hit his eyes, amazed by the scene before him. Everything was so vast, so large... There was so much out here. It seemed every small patch was teeming with life and melody. He could hardly believe the sights, sounds and smells of what the savannah had to offer. Even his sense of touch was elevated, the prickly grass and dirt combo beneath him nearly giving him a contact high. Everything was so new, so incredible. His jaw dropped wide as he stared, still lying down, at what he and his siblings had been missing out on this whole time. Sure, the den was safe and his mother was always there when he needed her, but this was just fantastic. Throwing a glance over his shoulder, he expected to see the same awe struck look that was on his face on theirs. Instead, he was greeted by his father's backside and voices of the other three, though he couldn't see them.

Never having been really that fond of vocal communication, Laszlo managed to pick his amazed body up and jog over to his father's side after tossing a look at his mother questioningly. Once there, he looked down, a quizzical look on his face. First, his steely eyes looked at Jumuu, who seemed somewhat over whelmed. Quickly, he switched to his brother, who seemed almost scared. Hew knew his brother wasn't the definition of brave, but he was compeltely certain that once Ronan got out here, he'd love it. Same with Jumuu. None would love it quite like Gharadi, though, he decided. The savannah had so much, it was probably the only thing that could satisfy his sister's short attention span. "You guys gotta see this." His voice was soft, though not timid. He never spoke loud, feeling no need for such things.

Jumuu almost took a step backwards but wound up bumping in to her brother. She swished her tail again, still quite uncertain about whether or not she should continue onward to run back in to the ever familiar, ever comforting darkness. Jumuu was a wee bit of a scaredy cat and just didn't like to take unnecessary risks. She hesitated so she could contemplate all sides of the matter, so she could evaluate the safety of herself and the others.

Of course the little spotted female didn't realize that was what made her hesitate, all she knew was what instinct whispered - dangers could lurk within the unknown. Jumuu was and would forever be cautious with ever step she took. Perhaps it was because the little lioness could be considered fragile, perhaps it was because she feared hurt - whatever the reasons, the grey one refused to budge until she was ready.

A glance at her sister, flicking an ear as her brothers footsteps pattered up behind them. "They all left - " And before she had a chance to finish, her sister was blinded by the light and the newness of everything. Ears flattening against her head, Jumuu knew her sister was already lost to the vibrant light before them.

Already her eyes were beginning to adjust - colours were starting to appear through the crazy light. The longer she stared she discovered the more spots danced in front of her eyes.

"Aren't you going?"

Ronan questioned, but whether or not it was directed at her or Gharadi, Jumuu would never find out! For a shadow appeared, dark and black, threatening the mouth of the den and the light! Muscles ready to pounce, it took but a gust of wind to tell her that the shadowed form wasn't enemy but safety!

As Juke poked his head through the den, it was all the reassurance Jumuu needed! A purr in her voice, she leaped forward to bridge the distance between herself and her father. Rubbing herself against his face, nuzzling him fondly and licking his cheek, the spotted cub did her best to bury herself within his scruffy mane. A gentle mew echoed her relief as she absorbed every reassurance she could get out of her father.

"Everybody left me," she sulked in a bit of a pout, looking up at him with the slightest touch of fear. "But!" She added, her fear suddenly breaking way to a radiant smile, "but you came back so every thing's okay now."

So Jumuu had some growing up to do. But she was young, and not every animal on the savanna was blindly curious and extroverted. Sometimes hesitation and wariness was the best route to go. With time - and with luck - little Jumuu might learn the art of straying away. . .

But for now, all she needed was her parents touch or her siblings encouragement. A little help never hurt, now and again. . .

Still nuzzled close, Jumuu glanced around herself, realizing that the brightness had disappeared. In fact, she was looking at Gharadi and Ronan from outside the den! It wasn't far out, mind you, but she was now sitting comfortably in a small patch of dirt and grass. The sky was blue, warm and inviting, while new scents began to flood her nose.

. . . wow.

Eyes widening, she couldn't help but freeze up and stare. This really was an awfully huge place.

As it happened with her other siblings, slowly but surely the green lioness beginning to see. Eyelids fluttered in the once more drastic change as he papa's shadow overcame her and her sister, giving a trademark wide grin of greeting to him as she too took a fearless seeming leap out of the den, seeing the familiar sight now of his long swaying tail. And of course, being a cub, anything that moved was fair game, right? Long green paws batted at it as she sat back on his hindquarters, not realizing that if she only turned around, she'd see the rest of the world laid out in front of her. But the game was soon lost at the arrival of her brother, whom, she greeted with a playful meow, tail swaying. "See wha-...Ohhhhh, that."

Out around her was the hugest thing they'd ever laid eyes on. Things were colorful, blues and greens, instead of the shadows and greys of the den, and it was warm and pretty. All around her things moved, they breathed, they sang with their own little melody and beat that'd she'd been born to enjoy. Of course at the moment she assumed everyone knew what the music was, but of course, everyone only consisted of her parents and siblings. She never thought for a second others were out there. Taking a hesitant step forwards, her green paw brushed against grass, it was springy and strange, almost prickly, but in a good way, and dirt seemed to move and was gritty and slightly unpleasant. Turning around to face her brothers and sister with an approving grin stretched wide across her face, she let out a loud laugh of, "C'mon! Let's go 'sploring!"

There was no comfort greater for Ronan than to have both his father and his brother appear at the mouth of the den together, although appear was an understatement for Laszlo - his father blocked quite a bit of the den's mouth when he crouched. And the knowledge that Jiza was somewhere nearby, out there, made up his mind. Without thinking, he bulled forward, only to run right into his sisters' hindquarters. He tumbled back with a squeal, landing in a dust caked bundle far back in the den.

The little cub lay for a moment, dazed by the fall. "Whaa..." Then his world stopped spinning and he realized his sisters were rapidly disappearing into the hole of bright light. Gingerly, he picked himself up and fairly galloped toward them. He didn't want to be left alone! Squeezing his eyes shut and bracing his head, the little blue cub burst out into the light and simply kept on running.

Jiza couldn't watched the cubs warmly from a short distance off, watching their overawed looks and the speed with which they recovered. Then Ronan burst from the den in a rare flurry of motion and charged straight through his siblings. His eyes squeezed shut, he had no idea where he was going and was now blindly running. "Juke, look!" She was in no hurry to retrieve her runaway son, only because she knew both she and Juke would have no trouble making up the distance and picking up the litte cub.

Juke wasn't sure if he was pleased his brood was out in the open or stinking worried. He nudged little Jumuu gentley and licked her back with one quick swoop before standing and striding slowly over to his mate. He sat beside her and stared at the four cubs with a loving affection that could only come from a father, a peaceful tune seeming to have dropped over him, until... Ronan went charging as if he were running away. A look of horror struck the first time father, and he looked at Jiza, his eyes asking what he should do. She seemed so cool, so calm, though... As if nothing was really the matter. Juke's pulse was through the roof, but she was a statue. He stared at her for a moment or so, trying to decide if she was just off in her own little world or if she truely didn't think Ronan's full out gallop was a threat to his health. "Jiza... Ronan..." He grasped for words but was too frightened of the possible injuries to come to actually put them together. For a moment, he thought he was going to simply dash after the cub and grab him by the scruff. He waited, though, somewhat anxiously, for what his mate would say. He trusted her judgement in these matters more than his own. Motherly instinct was a strong one.

As his siblings came out, Laszlo seeming danced around them, ridiculously pleased that they had come to see the surprising world that had previously been denied to them. He didn't say anything while the other two stared in awe and wonder, simply moved around on his toes, twirling his tail to the swift rhythms. He was just about to poke his head in the den to coax Ronan out, when the blue cub came crashing out on his own, running straight past the rest of the litter and onwards. As opposed to following his brother, Laszlo simply fell back on his bottom from the force and stared dumbly after, his mouth slightly agape. He wasn't entirely certain why his brother had charged out and kept going, though he wasn't about to shout after him. Instead, he looked at Gharadi with a slight smile and simply nodded. He didn't feel the need to talk much, epsecially with his green sister. She could do enough talking for the both of them easily. It was oddly comforting, knowing that no matter what, his sister could do the talking for him. She was an oddball, but he didn't mind one bit. Standing up slowly, he walked over to her, his tail waggling, and then shot a glance at Jumuu expectantly.

Jumuu watched as her father left before turning her golden eyes back on her sister and brother. So. This was it. The new world that had been handed to them. The sunlight wasn't as bright as it first had been, and the first thing that struck the grey feline was all the colours! Where the den had been dark and full of mud tones, this world had colours she'd never thought possible! It was . . . beautiful! And all the smells - there were so many she didn't know what to do! Everything was positively brand new. A glance at Gharadi and Laszlo, tail swishing a bit nervously behind her. Were they seeing the same thing she was? Were they feeling just as overwhelmed?

Ronan burst out of the scene, barreling forward without stop! "Ronan!" She almost hissed, jumping in surprise. There was her little brother, galloping off in the figurative-sunset with reckless abandon! Now where on earth was he going!?

And who KNEW what was out there!

As if to confirm the strange new animals in the world, a large winged, buzzing insect streamed over the little girls head. The noise, as well as the sensation of something whizzing past caused her fur to stand on edge. It also gave her the spring of surprise that put her on a bee-line straight after her baby brother!

"RONAN!" She cried, streaking past her parents as fast as her pale paws could carry her. "Come back!" Why was he running away from them? Where was he going - could she go to? Part of the girl felt it was her responsibility to look out for her siblings. . . Out of them all she seemed to be the most cautious and logical.

Running blindly in to the horizon was not a good idea! So if mother and father weren't bringing him back than she would!

. . . . if she could catch him.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:56 am

After nipping -and successfully ripping out- a tall piece of grass from the ground, the green young girl cocked her head towards Jumuu and Ronan darting off together, ears pricking in sudden curiosity of it all. Where in the world were they going? But, the thought was soon turned away at the prospect of exploring with her brother, and with a giggle, she bounded off, expecting Laszlo to follow her. Every single inch of the ground had to be sniffed, poked, prodded, and of course, licked. Such strange flavors this new world had! Tangy, crunchy, dirty, and smooth.

Each thing was inspected randomly, as her attention turned to everything that was new, colorful, or smelled nice. But what distracted her attention most of all, was the sounds! All of the wonderful sounds! There were too many for her to even think straight, buzzing, murring, beating with life. Unconsciously as she went the cubbin found herself humming these beats, sometimes tapping her foot to them. "Hey Laszlo do you see that? It tastes really good you should try it! But that one over there doesn't taste as good, I think it's cuz it's by that green thing, but that green thing is really whoo and sway-y an- Ooh!" That's how her constant conversations went, usually disrupted by a strange piece of grass, a leaf or something else. This time it was a small ant mound.

Jiza chuckled, shaking her head slightly. "He'll be okay, Juke," She said reassuring as she watched the little blue cub pelting away from them as if chased by monsters. He had his ears pinned flat against his head, so it was hardly a wonder that he couldn't hear anything. She was beginning to wonder how long her son would continue running before he realized that he had long since erupted from out of the den. Even so, she half rose, just in case anything did happen that would require herself and Juke's assistance, and watched on as Ronan's siblings promptly dashed after him.

Everything was muffled with his ears pinned as tightly as they were, but there were noticeably more sounds than before, and he felt all the more confused. Then, somewhere out of the muffledness, he heard what sounded like a shriek, and some faraway babbling. What? Immediately, everything froze, and he planted his feet firmly into the ground, swinging around toward the voices. What the heck was that? Only just realizing how flat his ears were, he slowly pricked them forward and around him to catch all the new sounds. Were they all there? He listened carefully for his family, not daring to crack his eyes open in case they weren't and he was lost somewhere.

ooc sorry this took a week, guys. <3 new school year jitters killed the muse on me.

Juke looked as his mate uneasily, but nodded, trusting her judgement. He sat next to her, but his muscls were obviously tense, ready to spring at a moment's notice. Should any of the cubs squeel in pain or limp about, he'd be there in a flash, even if they truely didn't need any help. He was so afraid they would all break, he could hardly control his shaking body. As he sat, though, the music flowing through him, his tail started to tap lightly, which seemed to calm him down at least a little bit. When all else in the world failed to soothe him, there were two things out there that could: Jiza and the music. His life revolved around those two, though he did have the four cubs in his life now. For the moment, it seemed that they were only piling on stress for the poor male, but deep down he did loe them. He was just very unsure of his parenting skills.

Laszlo loped after his siblings at an easy pace. Being the largest of the group did have its advantages, one of which being he had slightly longer legs. At least, for now. It was apparent that the little male had a stockier build, and one day his size would come from his upper body as opposed to his legs. For now, though, he could take easier steps and make the same distance as his sister Gharadi, who he was currently tailing. She stopped a bit more suddenly than he had expected though, and he had to veer a bit to the side as to not crash into her. He looked on a bit farther at his brother, who was a bit /too/ scared in Laszlo's mind, but quicly turned his attention back on his green sibling as she began speaking at an incredible rate. He was a bit amazed that he could always grasp everything that she said, even though he did consider himself a fair listener. He took a glance at what she had first spoke of, then to the second nasty taking thing, and then to the green swaying thing. By the time he was ready to take a bite out of the former most of the bunch, his sister was already enthralled by an ant mound.

Even though Gharadi had already moved on, Laszlo made his way over to the 'really good you should try it' thing and took a big chomp from it. He wasn't really sure what to make of it. It wasn't exactly yummy, but it wasn't disgusting, either. Swallowing and moving on, he threw a glance at his other two siblings before deciding to follow Gharadi around. He always felt comfortable with her. She did all the talking, which meant he hardly had to make any input at all. That was the way he liked it. Moving up next to her, however, he simply had to talk. "What is that?" He stared at the ants curiously and poked at one. It climbed over his paw, a feeling he didn't particularly like, and caused the little cub to jump backwards and shake around his foot in the air as if he were doing the hokey pokey. "GET IT OFF." He glared at the mound while shaking around his paw, somewhat offended by it.

((Sorry for the delay! I missed Katers post! 8D ))

Jumuu was hot on her brothers heels, almost as concerned about his well-being as her father! Golden eyes stuck only on his form, the girl didn't expect him to turn around - and stop - so quickly! Yowling in surprise, she did her best to stop. Realizing that her paws skidded against the ground, she attempted to leap over her brother and to the side, twisting mid-air in hopes to regain her balance.

Though her parents might be graceful, and even some of her siblings, Jumuu was but days old and hadn't quite mastered such skill. As it was, tripping over Ronan, she wound up rolling twisted up in a pile next to him, dizzy and more than a little confused.

In her air-born spill, the cubbin had forgotten which way was up and where the ground was located. Blue was such a strange colour. . . . It would take some getting used to. For a moment Jumuu just lay there, panting, catching her breath and hoping to goodness that her brother might have stopped.

Blinking the dirt out of her eyes, flopped soundly on her back, the girl's gold eyes looked up to find her brother. He hadn't gone running blindly away had he. . .? "Where - " she heaved, "were you - *gasp* going?"

Her spill had knocked the breath out of the poor thing, but she'd be ready for action in a moment.

Soon as she figured out why on earth her brother was upside down and standing on his head!
