it depends. sometimes they will give the female a complete clitorectomy (all of the clitorus is removed) and then also remove the labia. sometimes the labia majora are sewn together leaving only a small hole for urination. one reason they do this is to ensure the girls virginity when she gets married. when she does get married, the labia are sliced open once again so that she can have sex and bear children. any proceedures that they do can be extremely dangerous and succeptable to infection which can even cause death.

That is awful!! Who would want that done to them? i mean it would be extreamly painful and there is no practicul need for it. Sure u would always no they were virgins but dosent that intrude on the rights and freedoms of the woman in question? i just think parents should be more trusting and or find a different way to keep tabs on their daughters.
xd xd

i think that the majority of our opinions will be the same - it's horrible. i don't understand how anyone can sanction this act - how can parents knowingly subject their children to such terrible pain? i don't believe that we as a country should go in and 'americanize' every country over there, but we should at least halt these inhumane practices.

Stopping FGM on a worldwide basis does not mean we are americanizing other countries. I agree with you that FGM is a horrible practice, but the actions that it may take to end this ritual is not american or even western based. It is to spread the word that scientifically this operation is not needed and is quite hazardous to a woman's health. It is not western thinking, but humane thinking.

What is it for though, I don't see why they go to such extremes to ensure that a woman is a virgin when she's married. Is it like a religious reason, like 'if you don't marry a virgin you'll go to hell' or what? And so to them its ok for a man to have sex before marrage but not for a woman?

Her father makes alot of decisions for her. Like whos she going to marry for example. Her father is forcing her to marry her Cousin(sick man) to ensure her family to be "Pure" The men are the dominace is muslim tradition.
