Just because in Iran and other countries women are forced to cover themselves and may be reprimanded for wearing pink shoelaces (true fact, read it in a book) does not mean that Western women need to stop the crusade for the feminist movement. It is not finished. Besides, if the American woman do not improve the conditions of women's status then what will the persecuted woman look forward too. I don't think that the government can be involved in women's rights more thatn it already is. The only remaining problem that must be solved is the general esteem of the common woman. She needs to know that she is lawfully considered equal to men, she only needs to stand up for herself and create her own ideal outlook on the perspective of women from both genders.
My mother works in the artillary division of the Army and was denied promotion for ten years beacuse of her gender. I am not complaining I am just saying that she did not quite, but did reach that promotion. She continued to command the male soldiers (there are only three other women in her regiment) under her despite their rude comments and opposition. I am not saying that all men act this way, but that this resentment still exists.
I don't want the same body, conscience, or brain as a guy (no offense to our male readers), only that women will continue to work in male dominated carees and even the odds for us. It is because that we are different physically and mentally that we need more representation in the media/ corporations/governmen/etc so that all views of the public are accounted for and we can work towards a better tommorow that everyone will apreciate.

supernerd, your mom sounds awesome.
i agree completely with what you're saying and i'd like to add that i think what feminists as a whole are fighting for is massive social change. we've gone pretty far with the government as far as equil oppurtunity and gender equality goes, but the social ideas that girls can't be in the army or that a girl who dresses provocatively deserves to be raped need to be reckoned with and we're going to do the reckoning. obviously not everyone feels this way but some do and that means we've still got to keep up the fight.

Hear, Hear (thunderous applause). This guild show that the fight still exists. To extend my previous comments, your title "Do men hold power over women?" Not neccesarilly. The problem is not that men force women to bend to their will it is that women belive that they can. The fact that a women (or any other minority group) can only be intimidated by the male work force if they allow themselves too. That is what needs to be realized. For years the status of women has changed and we still need those pioneers to venture out into the stereotyped areas that are of male dominance and show that we also belong there. We need more lawyers, politicians, rock stars, etc. I know that teachers and cosmologists are in great demand (and it is okay if you want to be one) but we must break the barriers were only a few bricks have been removed.

Just because we have so many more freedoms here as women it doesn't mean that we should just be thankful for what we have now because other countries treat their women so bad, it just means that those countries are amazingly wrong.

I think if the woman decides that they want to stay at home with the kids, they are free to. Not all women want to work you know. If a women decides to work, then they will work. It really depends. If the man is abusive then there's a problem and the woman probably stays home but of course, there are many women who are abusive to men in the world.
If a woman has the will to, they will do whatever they want. As it's the same with men.

Quote: Does this mean that as "spoiled" American women we should shut up about getting more equality in this country and just be grateful for what we have achieved? No way hosay. Women are women, whether they are across the world or not. I can only hope that within the last 50 years, the situations where women are controlled like that have improved. But I'm sure they have, even if so by a little bit.

Some will be happy with that. They will raise their children to the best of the capabilities. To be in support the advancement of the status of women does not mean you have to be in the workforce. The Feminist movement cannot turn away posible support from stay at home moms as the movement is all about achieving gender equlity for al women. Discriminating against stay at home moms was a tactic used in the early days of the Feminist movement. If a man is abusive the wopmen needs to seek help out of the situation and vice versa. It can be done because it has been done before.

Men have no power over women. Any man who thinks he does is a pig. The fact is that women have power over men. Trust me, if you threatin any guy that you're going to cut his balls of, he'll admit that women have power over him.
