(This is really about fanfiction romance, but since we don't have a fanfiction forum and we do have a romance forum, I'm posting it here.)
No, I'm not afraid of reading sex ... I'm afraid of reading a really bad story with fan-girly sex stuffed in it.
Sometimes, I just feel like reading about the romance of my favorite couples, especially if they're non-canon and I can't read about that pairing anywhere else. But it's always such a battle to find a well-written romance, (much less one that has an 'adult' scene in it) that I usually give up before I succeed.
My experience is that fanfic romance falls into roughly three categories; the silly stories the center around a detailed sex scene (though, except for the characters' names, these fics seem to have -nothing- to do with the show or the characters), the painfully melodramatic stories that end with very exaggerated 'love making,' and the rare, well-rounded, good story.
This is also the reason I've never gotten into romance books in general. The only ones I've ever picked up just ... didn't have enough story to them. People tell me (and I believe) that I just haven't read the good books, but I was still discouraged.
Anyway, long story short, by the time I've gone through the quest to find a good fanfic romance, I'm cranky from the search and not in the mood to read about love anyway. You know what I mean?

bleh, I hate reading sex scenes in books, as much as I love reading about romantic development between chricters (I offten get more into that then the acual plot of the book) I'm reading alot of Christopher Moore and as much as I love his books, sex is a very consistent theme sweatdrop

For every one good romance author out there, it seems like there's another twenty authors who should never be permitted near a writing utensil again. As discouraging as this is, I still have hope for the romance genre. I have the same outlook on fantasy and science fiction so it's not just romance.
Sexy fanfiction isn't something that I'm terribly familiar with. I don't buy fanfics anymore, much less read them, so I'm not sure what's out there. But sometimes my interest is piqued. Even though the excerpt on the author's official site makes me want to cringe and scream for more attention to prose, Unmasqued: An Erotic Novel of the Phantom of the Opera is something that I want to read because it's about Erik. It's not even inspired by the book, but the recent Webber musical film.

I've discovered that I tend to skip the actual sex scenes in anything I read, fanfiction or book. I tend to read from online forums that require ratings (and often a list of why so rated), so it's easier to skip the ick. Generally, I have trouble with most romances being pointless and full of cardboard characters (I think I was scarred by Harlequin), but I'm slowing trying to find ones that aren't straight porn yet aren't boring, like the mystery/romance series "...in Death" by J.D. Robb--and yet I'm still skimming the sex.

That's exactly why I write my own. But on occasion, I do find good quality fics and they're generally novel-length, which means a plot. My favourite fics have damn good plots too, not to mention the romance scenes are very...well written. If you ever want any reccomendations...

I prefer "yaoi" fanfiction sex scenes... if the characters are believable together. There are just some books where it would have been better if the two guys ended up together. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't like to read about a protagonist having an affair with the brother instead of the leading-lady. Only if it weren't that far of a stretch. I don't think I could read a straight fanfiction because there are some scenes better left unsaid... or to the original author. However, more often than not, I end up writing yaoi into my own novels with my original characters. I don't have much interest in writing fanfic (unless it's a couple dying to be together. In fact, each series I'm working on has a secondary "gay" couple in addition to the main "straight" couple. twisted
