A friend pointed out to me that why would a ghost wait for years for a "game" purchased at toys R us to send us a message. My granma says it's just a toy.
And I have been thinking why are there all those stories about bad things happening from Ouija boards and spirits coming through them and other strage happenings.
I think that is not the board itself but, welcoming spirtis from their plane. Think of it as this: Our plane is a car. We are driving down the road of life and see a hitchiker. If we so chose to pick him up we are "Welcoming him" into our car (Plane) He could be a nice guy or a serial killer. We can't blame the side of the road for letting him in, we opened the door.

That certainly is an interesting (and sensible) way of looking at it! While the board itself is not possessed by anything, it sort of acts like a surrogate medium. That is, instead of finding a psychic person to ask questions to a spirit, you're using a talking board. There is, of course, a price to pay for using a shortcut. That is, the ratio of good to bad spirits you acquire tends to lean towards the bad side. With a psychic, you can ask to talk to your dead uncle or what have you; an Ouija board is a lot more random, and there's more bad than good in that fishpond. The fish have always been there, someone just has to cast the line.

I regard them as paranormal objects just from the vibes I got from an old one my grandparents had. It has since disappeared but none of the kids wanted to use it and would rather play with some of the other stuff.

That could have been just by chance. Again, I think Ouija boards have a tendency to draw negative spirits. It's not 50-50 good-bad. This could be part of the "ritual" nature of the Ouija board, or it could be because the board bypasses use of an experienced psychic. Using the hitchhiker analogy, it's a lot more likely that you're going to pick up a bad person than a good person, too. Ultimately, yes, it's your choice to let the hitchhiker in, but you still have to know the consequences. Your friend, for instance, probably wasn't seriously asking whether she was going to die or not (unless there was a specific reason she was going to die, like terminal illness or something). She just channeled something malicious, and it took her perhaps too literally.

For those saying it is just a toy I would like to point out that the first historical mention of a ouija board, or something that resembles on was in China around 1200BC. It was a divenation method called Fu Ji. Although Fu Ji is also thought of to be like automatic writing. There are also historical accounts of ancient Greeks used a method like the ouija board to view oracles and divenation. The first recorded use of the term 'talking board' camed from the USA in the mid 19th century. To begin with there were different methods of using the 'talking board' one which included using a pendulum over the letters and watching to see what they spelled out. The 'talking board' was patent protectived on May 18th 1890 but bussinessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard. In 1891 the first use of the word Ouija Board was used when they called that by a man called William Fuld, how worked for Charles Kennard. This inforation was brought to you through research ion Wikipedia, link here if you would like to hear it in more detail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouiji

I have heard both sides of the story, that it has some supernatural properties and that it is nothing but a toy. I myself have never used one so I can't make a definate call.

Well, can't you buy an Ouija Board at like a kid's store? Or do you have to get some sort of special one to achieve these affects?

I'm going to have a go at it one day with some friends. A lot of my friends aren't believers and they have reason. I mean, Ouija boards are found in K-Mart and Toys R Us now for crying out loud but that doesn't necessarily make it untrue. I haven't tried it yet but I think there's something there and everyone should try it at some point in their lives just to say that they have. I don't think I'd go purchase one at K-Mart though... not that it won't work or anything but I've read that it's possible to just make it yourself and it's rather simple to make.
I've always kind of viewed the boards as cellphones or any other contacting devices. That's what it is supposed to do. I only fear contacting negative spirits. I've heard accounts of weird and frightening happenings so it is a little creepy. Nonetheless, it's probably worth a shot.

A long time ago (before I was born) my father was in possession of a Ouija board (one of the REAL ones, not made by Parker Brothers) before he met my mother. My dad had had quite a tough life previous to that... he endured a fire, was chronically depressed, and was a loner for the most part. When he began dating my mother she forced him to get rid of the Ouija board since my mother is a Christian and she was terrified of things having to do with spirits and such. My dad gave it to a friend of his at work that had expressed interest in it, and after work my dad went home while the guy he gave it to was still on shift... the same day, hours later, the man got his arm trapped in a machine at the factory and died. Ever since I was told that story, I've been terrified of these things.
I'm also not sure if this counts or not but there was a game that was rather similar when the movie Jumangi first came out. My best friend and I were playing the game (it involved disasters from the movie, and it had one of those guiders you have to hold like on a Ouija board) and it landed on "monsoon" or the flood icon. Surely enough, less than an hour later a major pipe in the basement exploded and the entire basement was flooded up to a foot off the ground.
In other words, if it's a game... it's not one I want to be a part of! It'd probably do you well to stay away from them.

That could have been just by chance. There are some things we can't control. That might have been the subconcious. The boards as a whole- should not be messed with frankly. I agree its a medium to the other side but what makes it dangerous is that amatures mess with it that don't know what they are doing. btw never ask a paranormal object if your going to die.

Totally agreed dude. Me and a friend of mine in the army made a makeshift white trash ouija board out of a pizza box cover and the cut top of a beer can for the planchette. It never did anything for me personally, but she says she had experiences with it. I don't think its the board, but the mind-state of the people using it.
