As the Flowers Are

I've always loved this scene, the creation and actual experience of reading it always bothers me, but I love it. It reminded me of this:

Razors pain you,
Rivers are damp,
Acids stain you,
Drugs cause cramp,
Guns aren't lawful,
Nooses give,
Gas smells awful,
You might as well live.

So is there someone out of the four, that anyone would like to read more of?

I don't know what to post.
Or if I even should.

WARNING
Sensitive material.

I didn’t live my life as a drug addict, as far as I was concerned my life was normal, and the drugs were as habitual as breathing. I didn’t meet people and confess my life to them, I wouldn’t “do anything for a fix,” I just lived my life with Brody to the best of my ability.

My arms were full of groceries as I struggled to turn the knob of my and Brody’s apartment. I was humming something Revlin had played for me once quietly, not drawing too much attention to myself. Ignoring the b*****b going on to my right, and the drug deal to my left, I finally managed to contort my body in such a way that the door creaked open. Not expecting to be greeted by a gun barrel, I jumped back in fear. Experience had taught me just not say anything.

“How’re ya gunna pay Brody?” The boy with a bandana wrapped around his head motioned for me to shut the door, pointing with his gun. I did as the gun directed and carefully put the bags down. The boy’s name was Gilbert, but he went by his last name, Stone. He spoke like he was always drunk, blurring everything into a mess of the English language. I would equate that debilitation to far too much meth eating away at his front teeth and gums.

“I told you Stone,” Brody was far more intimidating, but didn’t hold nearly as much superiority around those parts. “You know what happened with the last deal. That Jackass Jay ripped me-“

“Shu’ up Brody!” The gun was then directed toward my boyfriend, maybe two inches from his face. “I tol’ you- git the money or I git it from yer blood!”

Brody had a serene expression of composure on his face, remaining completely professional as Stone began to tremble in anger.

“Maybe we can work something out,” Brody said glancing over to me. My shoulders dropped in that you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me, kind of way.
Stone lowered the gun and cracked me a toothless grin.

“What’re ya thinkin’ Brode?”

All Brody did was wink at me and return to his regular spot on the couch.
“You decide.”

“Bro-“ I was interrupted by the gun which I had assigned its own personality. It struck me hard across the face, my teeth cutting into my cheek. Stone approached me like a serial killer would; slow and intimidating.

“Ya know how much yer boy owes me?”

I shook my head, shuffling backwards.

“Five. Ya know how much yer gonna have to pay back so yer boyfrien' there gits ta live?”

Five thousand dollars. A days worth of cocaine for Brody’s growing habit. A weeks worth of anything else. However many hours worth of abusive rape, sex, blowjobs, anything else Stone wanted.

When Stone threw me onto the floor, all I could think about was Revlin, and how happy I could have been. How much I regretted everything, but I couldn’t do a thing to stop it. I went somewhere else in my mind. Right there next to Brody, I was being used as a pay off, and he didn’t do anything but turn on the news and use up the remainder of his blow.

Three hours later, Stone left me bleeding with a black eye and probably a broken rib.

“No more of ma business Brody. Yer unreliable,” Stone said and then left, slamming the door behind him. I struggled to bring myself to my feet.

“How could you do something like that?” I thought I had drooled on myself, but when I wiped my mouth my hand was covered in a rust colored streak.

“Like what? Oh. Don’t worry about that.”

“Don’t worry?”

“Yeah, Babe. I’ll be fine.”

I stood there swaying slightly, my mouth agape.

“Brody! He raped me practically!”

“Chill, Tarynn. It wasn’t rape. I gave him permission.”

“That’s not how things work. Are you stupid, or just cruel?”

He finally turned to face me, still sitting on the couch.
“Oh, I could be cruel.”

“Don’t you even care?”

“Yeah, sure. Just make sure you clean yourself before we have sex again. You know-take a few showers. I don’t want to get grossed out.”
I shook my head and went into the bathroom to clean myself off.

“Use something to cover up that bruise, too. I don’t want anyone thinking I did it to you- besides, it’s not very cute!” Brody yelled from the living room.

“Cute. I was just beaten and used as payment, and he’s worried about me looking cute,” I muttered to my reflection. The gun had struck my cheekbone so hard that a raise bloody welt tore through the skin. I showered, sitting there on the ceramic as the water poured down my body.

Tears wouldn’t come, anger wouldn’t come. There was nothing there. I got dressed again, making a careful effort to coat my face in concealer and pressed powder. I did my eye make-up just like Brody liked it. I wore the color of lipstick he liked around his neck. I wore the top he bought for me to show off to his friends. “It makes your tits look even bigger,” he’d say. I don’t know why I was trying to impress him after what he had just done to me.

“See? Now you look good. Come here, baby. I love you.”

That’s why.

I came over to him and fell into his lap, still in a slightly bothersome amount of pain, but I ignored it.

He kissed me and said, “Sorry about that Babe. Thanks though. You saved my a**. What’d you get from the store?”

“Everything you told me to. I bought you those cookie things you like.”

“How much?”

“Don’t worry about the price. It came from my stash.”

“It better have.”

Brody took a drink out of the freshly opened bottle of vodka and handed it to me.

“Drink up, Babe. We’re celebrating!”

“Celebrating what?”

I swallowed hard as the drink poured down my neck, burning sweetly. Brody pulled out a large wad of money from a crack in the couch.

“Holy s**t, Brody! How much is there?”

“9k at least.”

“Where’d you get it?” I started counting the bills.

“Why do you think I was gone yesterday?”

“You made this ******** yeah! Those kids south of here are real stupid.”

“You mean you had all of this, but you still let Stone-“

“Babe, you should understand. We can use this for ourselves now. I was only thinking of you.”

I forced a smile, still suspicious of Brody’s actions. “Come on now. Share some lines with me.”
