Ahem...

WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT MARTHA??? Why does everyone have such a problem with her? Okay, so sometimes she's a tad annoying, but so too is every single companion the Doctor has ever had. Yes, and that includes Rose.

Oh, yay! Yes! *hugs you*

I'm certain he's had at least one non-annoying companion. I've just... never heard of them. Most people who talk about Jamie like him, but I've definitely heard some complaints. For some reason, Nyssa springs to mind as someone I don't remember hearing any complaints about, but I hear very little at all about her. My personal favorite companion, Fitz, only appears in the novels, but anyhow, my running tally of people who I know don't like him is currently up to four, and believe me, unless you can't tolerate flawed characters, he's very likable. Everyone is somehow objectionable.

But it's the rare Martha-basher who even gives a decent reason they don't like her. Rose was clingy too. Rose was so clingy. Probably clingier than Martha. And I don't even mind Rose's clinginess so much, because she had redeeming qualities. But I like Martha better...

But... Rose is clingy too... she got all freaked out about Sarah-Jane. When has Martha ever been very clingy? And the Doctor is against violence and killing people. I like that about him. If you take away his nonviolence, I get sad...

Rose got freaked out about Sarah-Jane, yes, but then she realized she was doing it, and stopped.

I love Martha as a character, but I never liked the fact that she was in love with the Doctor. That always seemed the one thing that didn't fit in with the rest of her.

I quite liked the whole 'unrequited love' thing. I think it creates some nice drama. The Doctor loves his companions, but he is unable to love in the same way that they do. And the only time he ever did, his love interest (Madame de Pompadour, remember?) died on him. There was definitely a mutual attraction going on between the Doctor and Rose, and if that had developed into anything, the show would have become like a soap opera, and if it hadn't, it would have just gotten annoying really fast.
That's why it's healthy for Doctor Who (and indeed any other show) to move on and accomplish great things, rather than merely linger on memories past. Or something.

Actually, I think the story should go more like this...

"Wanna play 'doctor', Doctor?" whispered Martha softly into the Time Lord's ear. The Doctor's eyes bulged wide in shock as his female companion slowly unbuttoned his shirt and started to caress his bared chest. Just then the TARDIS door swung open, and Rose Tyler strode towards the pair. "He's mine, b***h!" Rose exclaimed, yanking Martha by the hair and throwing her violently to the floor.

Martha recovered quickly and got into her Crouching Macra kung fu stance. "So you're the dumb blonde he's been whining about all this time? Run back home, K9, the Doctor don't need you anymore." At this, she charged at Rose with a furry of blows, which Rose countered with some moves she learned while filming the music video for "Because We Want To".

While both girls tore into each other like ferrets stuffed down Sylvester McCoy's pants, the Doctor escaped unnoticed and ran into the TARDIS's secondary console room. "First Grace, and now these two. I swear, these 21st century Earth girls are so damn clingy!" With the press of a few buttons, he jettisoned the primary console room, with Rose and Martha in it, into the Time Vortex.

"Pity. I think I left my blue jacket in that room. Oh well. Guess I should pick up a some new 'companions'. But where? Ah... I know! Barcelona!"

xp

rofls...except for the fact that Rose was way clingier than martha (who doesn't understand the meaning of 'no') I full heartedly approve.

this is also a very good point!
