Shao, mouth open to argue further, froze when the other capitulated so quickly. Well, that had been easier than he'd expected. Closing his still-gaping mouth, he followed Al into the kitchen.

Grabbing some breadcrumbs, salt and pepper, he set down the fish and then headed to the fridge to get some milk. "Fried okay with you?" he asked, cocking his head to the side as he watched Al wrestle the frying pan out of the cupboard. If the other didn't like fish cooked that way...well, maybe they could filet them and throw them into a dish in the oven with some butter and lemon sauce?

"Yeah, that works." As long as it wasn't too noisy, he'd be fine. His worry about waking others up wasn't so much getting scolded, but rather having to share their hard-earner dinner... not that he did much to get it.

Finally, the pan was placed on the stove. Shouldn't take too long to heat, thankfully... he liked all this human technology! Though, he didn't remember much about his life as a regular pokémon, so he wasn't too sure of how much different it was. He took a seat on the stool by the working table in the middle of the kitchen, folding his arms over the wooden counter and following the zangoose's movements with his eyes. "Didn't know you could cook."

Shao shrugged, moving smoothly around the kitchen, preparing the fish for the frying pan. "As I keep mentioning, when your trainer doesn't see a need to ever feed you anything but chocolate and potato chips, you learn quickly--I'm not an expert, by any means, but it's given me a good reason to at least be able to make the basics."

Plopping the first two fillets into the pan, he eyed them, hoping he hadn't gotten the oil too hot.

He was still slightly damp around the edges, but hardly even seemed to notice.

"Hn, fancy that." Alphonse commented, lowering his gaze to the pan. That didn't look half bad at all... and soon it smelled quite well. Maybe he should learn to cook some day, in case his own trainer decided to stop bringing him such expensive food. He was pretty spoiled, but not by his own choice!

He sneezed again, then rested his head on his folded arms. "My trainer feeds me all sorts of things, I think he's trying to make up for the fact I never see him much. He works all day, you know..." Just what he did all day, he didn't know. Thankfully, the man had taken his time to train him up quite a bit so he could entertain himself battling, even if he rarely did that. "You should join me for lunch sometime. My room's not hard to find, just go to the last floor, last door on the right."

Curse his trainer, still. He just had to give them the farthest room, didn't he? To "keep a track of the dates of arrival". How silly.

Shao cocked his head to the side. "Hmm...well, you know, there's times I wish that Clint had a job that kept him away most of the time." he observed, shaking his head.

"And...don't you eat down here with everyone else?" Fishing the fillets out of the hot oil, he placed them on a nearby plate, before setting them down in front of Al, brushing a few unruly strands of hair out of his face, and starting on a couple more.

"Not really. I can't always wander about freely, even if I want to." He stretched, taking a moment to try and comb his hair down. Every time he got wet, it poofed up and looked unruly and untidy - a look that didn't go well with him at all.

His attention suddenly turned to the fish. As mad and annoyed as he'd been before, they looked much too tasty to carry out his threat of not eating a single one after Shao had paid him great insult. So, twitching his lips a bit, he reached out to tear off a piece of meat and stick it in his mouth. "... you're not too bad of a cook. Maybe you'll be able to get a job here eventually, Mr. Chef."

"Moreover, how long ago did you arrive here?"

Shao nodded, keeping a grin to himself at Al's attempt at taming his unruly locks. It was...pleasant, he observed, to see the other in a state of discomfort.

Snorting, he shook his head ruefully. "Just what I always wanted..." he quipped, not at all enthusiastic about cooking for other people on a regular basis. He'd rather eat what he cooked himself, for the most part.

"I...don't remember, for sure. I think a few days ago? However, a few days with Clint is enough for a lifetime." he added quickly, furrowing his brow. Truth be told, while the young trainer irritated him to no end, he didn't -hate- him nearly as much as his words might imply.

"And you? How many of our kind are there, anyway?" He naturally presumed that the other would -know-, unreasonable though that presumption might be.

Alphonse furrowed a brow in thought, trying to recall. He remembered the house being different before, but that couldn't be because the house had been the same ever since he had been brought here in this state. "Hm..." he rubbed his chin for a moment, still playing with a lock of hair to try and tame it - all futile.

"... I think I've been here for as long as I can remember, and longer still. My trainer, he's been in charge of all of this all along." He yawned, stretching a bit before folding an arm over the counter and using it as a pillow for his head. "And I would say... well, several others. I've seen them around. I've heard them and their trainers... but I don't come out much during the day, so I really haven't interacted with anyone else yet. Well, except Sophie and you."

A grin appeared on his face, as he gave Shao an amused glance. "And if you hate me, you'll have no words for Sophie. She's hyper, happy, and much too positive for my tastes... I think you'd get along so well."

Finishing up the last of the fish, Shao plated them all, then turned off the burner and moved, going to sit down next to Al...and to finally eat some of the delicious-smelling fish. Taking a bite, he revelled in the way the crunchy outside melded perfectly (if he did say so himself) with the flaky, tender fish meat inside. Chewing thoughtfully, he nodded at the first bit of Al's reply--it made sense, although he was still curious as to exactly how many of them there were, running around...and how many more were going to be showing up, really.

At the last, however, he nearly choked. Coughing into his hand, he glared over at Al, as if blaming him for his predicament. Recovering, he set down his fork. "I never said I hated you." he replied, tone somewhat snotty. "But perhaps you're right--after all, with a ringing endorsement like that, I'm sure she and I would be a match made in heaven." He could barely contain his sarcasm, although it was laced with an almost imperceptible hint of amusement, also. Al was unique, out of the people he'd spoken to thus far...in that he seemed capable of annoying the cranky zangoose to no end, while amusing him at the same time--whether Shao was willing to fess up to the amusement, however, was another question entirely.

"A perfect couple, of course... what an entertaining thought." The meowth grinned, reaching out to tear off another piece of that delicious, cooked-to-perfection fish - or at least, it was perfect for him, being that he rarely got to taste food cooked by others that weren't the employers of the mansion... another thing he should probably tell Shao about. But no, why bother ruining this marvelous moment talking about such frivolous things?

However, Shao had said it: he didn't hate Alphonse... which was good, considering their short argument from before. Thank goodness the meowth couldn't hold a grudge for long unless the person/character was truly unbearable. "You know, I'll be quite happy to show you the rest of the mansion and such, but I'm usually asleep during the day... I mean, it's alright so far, because I don't really have a reason to be up all day. And the night is so dark and quiet, so peaceful... it's so much nicer to wander the hallways alone." He made a pause, licking his fingers in a very cat-like gesture before he spoke again. "But I assume you'd rather sleep at night, too? I mean... after all, you do have a trainer to answer to... and from what you tell me, you two sort of... bond a lot, don't you?"

Of course, the thought of the zangoose actually bonding with someone else with a big grin on his face was something Alphonse could just not picture. Perhaps playing tour-guide to his new 'friend' would be much easier than he'd guessed... and he'd finally have someone else to socialize with. Oh, he'd been so very lonely ever since he could remember, unable to mingle with people as he saw fit!
