Quick, turn around so you can look down at your own shadow. Now, get a flashlight. Turn the flashlight on, and point it at your own shadow. The light goes over the shadow, and overlaps it.

If the main light is behind you, making your shadow in front of you, and you shine a flashlight on your shadow, you're creating a new light source, look closly behind you now, your flashlight will created a new shadow smaller lighter shadow behind you. Multiple lights breed multiple shadows.
