This is something I've thought about a lot since I joined Gaia. It's obvious to all of us that many artists do artwork on Gaia for fake money and virtual items, including myself. I take it considerably less seriously than many other artists like ProdigyBombay or PreciousFlame or whoever which is probably why I'm not very well known. I'm sure if I devoted myself more to Gaia and getting my name out there, I'd be more popular, but to be honest, something about Gaia artwork seems degrading. Technically, it's promotion, so you can never really call it a bad idea. But something about the "really good artists" community reminds me of the popular kids at school in their own little click. Ironically enough, as I started writing this topic, I was watching Family Guy. It was the episode where Brian was trying to promote himself as a writer in Hollywood, and as everyone seemed to turn him down and ignore him, I was being ignored in a topic where the 'popular artists' were talking. I tell someone that I'm going to Otakon 2007, and the first thing that pop's outta their mouth is "buy stuff from me and my friends!" It seems to have reached a level of almost whoring oneself out; the way they promote themselves most often seems pretentious.
Are collections largely based in fanart and commissions truly artwork? My best artwork comes from my original stories that I've put my heart and soul into and spent years developing. I devote my life to my stories and work harder at them than anything else. It's not that I feel that these artists don't work hard. I won't really pass judgment, but somehow I feel apart from these people. I can't really fit in with them. What are your thoughts on Gaia artwork, the 'in' Gaia artists crowd, and how Gaia artwork compares to other types, if there is a difference?

There's always an 'in' crowd. Have you ever heard of ` C h a x? He's one of the darkest and most twisted people you'll ever meet and yet people follow him as if he's some sort of god and his art equals that(it's fairly standard, if very well done anime fair). In my eyes he is a prime example of internet fame and how dramatically it can effect a human being(well, fame in general). As a writer I think one of things you must do while you develop your craft is to network. Make friends, meet their friends, expand your list of contacts, get your name out there. Artwork is artwork no matter where it's presented.

Koi is in my siggie because he does amazing artwork with character.
I only do artwork for people I like, beyond that, I'm too lazy. You can never really make that much money from art anyway.

I think that drawing gaia characters is a testament to your artistic skill but it borders on an insult of your creative ability. (Yes they are different)
And just like yuki said there will always be an "In" crowd. I think the only ones who need to like your work is the person who commissioned it and yourself.

To be honest, I can draw Gaia Avies, but I hate it slightly. It feels....limiting, because I can't draw what I want, just what I see. It's the reason I don't do fanart much.

Lord Vyce To be honest, I can draw Gaia Avies, but I hate it slightly. It feels....limiting, because I can't draw what I want, just what I see. It's the reason I don't do fanart much. I am definitely less passionate about fanart and Gaia artwork than original stuff, and I think that's why I don't have as much respect for people who do draw what they see. I don't think fanart is uncreative, but I do think it takes a lot more effort to actually create characters and storylines and illustrate them in a complex three-dimensional atmosphere. That is what I consider the defining factor for an artist, and I'm not sure many of the popular Gaia artists have that. To be honest, this topic and concern of mine is really a reflection of Gaia itself. Granted, it is a huge community where intellectuals and idiots of all kinds can come from all corners of the earth and post an array of ideas from their shoe size to critical political topics. However, due to the growing population as well as substantial popularity, Gaia is beginning to reflect the real world--members hacking other members for gold and items, slander and insults, and naturally chaos. This is an even greater image of the Internet itself. Much like road rage, anonymity encourages the rude and uneducated to take advantage of the fact that they are unknown and can get away with whatever they want. People are obsessed with Gaia to an unhealthy level. Even knowing this, I continue to come here, but I'm sure it's only a matter befor I grow tired of this place, sell all of my items, and get the hell out. Despite the fact that it is the one of the few places I can ever hope to find people like myself, I have always and will always hate the Internet.

Personally, this reason is why I hold a general distaste for society. In my eyes, most people are weak, selfish and arrogant and I often won't think differently until they prove their worth. Hiding behinds masks and cutting down others in order to build up their fragile ego. This is most likely the reason I also choose not to freely associate. I seek strength in myself and others who are strong in either mind, body or soul. I will forever choose to remain strong, and the way I desire, is to remain kind and caring despite everything that comes to pass. I will lend my aid to those strong enough to seek me out or those strong enough to push through life, anyone else I have little to no pity on.

..I have no artistic talent whatsoever.
It's true. I'd love to draw the ideas in my head; I'd probably draw anime more often then not, and landscapes- sunsets, flowing mountains and rivers, valleys, and art depciting heartfelt stories. The thing is, I never have time to practice- and even on the small occasions that I do, the result turns out so poor that it puts me off the mood to draw for months on end. My biggest issues tend to be the proportions, hair and hands. And ears. My eyes are mediocre.
In other words, while I'd love for some ideas to be drawn out from my imagination, I'm limited to the words I can type- which, albeit literate, will never have the precise appearance as a picture.
The funny thing is, the 'popular' artistes on Gaia? ProdigyBombay, PreciousFlame, etc.? I've never heard of them. It isn't because I don't enjoy art made of my avatar- quite the contrary, I'm quite vain, and I appreciate every bit of art that immortalizes my avatar. The thing is, everyone who's ever done any sort of art for me's done it for free. Because, amusingly enough, I'm stingy when it comes to giving strangers gold that I earned.
Yeah, it's weird, but then again the people who've done avi art for me are pretty freakin' awesome for doing them for free. ^-^
In either case, I could only write about characters, stories and situations that I find to be awesome, breathtaking, touching, or something I'm willing to put some personal effort into doing. Gaia artwork can be rewarding if done for large amounts for gold, but I feel it's only truly enriching if it's done of something the artist enjoys drawing- gold doesn't typically factor into it. The 'in' Gaia Artists crowd I could care less about, because more often then not? All they want is gold from me. They're a part of a business, a clique, that I really don't want to get sucked into. And as for Gaia Artwork being compared with regular artwork...Well, I honestly don't see much of a difference; art is art.
Yeah. That's just the opinion of someone who really doesn't focus on art; so what do I know? wink

Frankly, popularity on Gaia is the biggest farce since high school popularity.
Important? Hell no! But it would have been great for me if you were popular because you could draw stupid anime characters. Damn, all the boys I could have had...
But anyways, there's always going to be cliques, it's human nature. As for Gaian artists who whore themselves, let 'em.
"Buy my ******** no b***h, you suck and I would rather have a Kiki than your chicken scratch. Go back to high school and learn to use a pencil properly"
If you WANT to get your name out there, put your work in your sig. I did and to give you an example of my growing name, I got 10 requests in one day and I've had to deny a couple people because I'm swamped. If people like your stuff, they'll tell their friends or flaunt it for the world.
The Internet is such a joke...
