I've been playing Slime Forest for a while now. It's a great refresher and I've learned a bit of kanji along the way. I was wondering if anyone else knows of any other games that aid in learning Japanese.

Wow. eek Thanks for mentioning that game! I tried it out and... and... It's marvelous! It's so fun remembering kana when cute slimes are going to kill you while you're doing that! Thanks! 4laugh

I don't know any other kana games, this is pretty much my first one I'm playing. sweatdrop Sorry.

Slime forest and other games are fun and you do learn some things

But at the end of the day, you will learn these things faster just by going over them with regular study methods

Anyway, there is word match up game with a penguin

http://coolest.com/penpen/

It's good for wasting a few minutes, but again, you'll get there faster studying normally

In short, games should be your support and NOT your crutch. Study, then games should be the gameplan.

So far it seems to work just as well as flash cards for me. It works well to help memorize the meaning of kanji any way. Than again, maybe I need a stricter study regiment. sweatdrop Thanks for the mention of the other game Geishaboy!

The BEST way to learn kana and kanji is to actually read it in a context. Try finding some Japanese childrens books and have a read (You would be surprised what you can find at your local second hand book store)

Also, manga with furigana is a very good way to reinforce kanji that you have been studying

Yeah I have a couple books. I did find Peter Pan in Japanese which has been pretty fun. Slime Forest is a bit of a help, I've learned the meaning for a bunch of Kanji, but I still don't know how to read them. That Penguin game really helps though cause you have to pair up the sound with the meaning.

...I 'unno, both of our cheap-a** bookstores in my town only sell books about our stupid rodeo and childrens books like "Pet the Kitten" in English. Last time I even bothered to go in there (when I was like...7), they didn't even have that Highlights magazine for kids.

Not really a game, but more like a quiz to learn hiragana/katakana/kanji and compounds.

It can be hit and miss

Although I once found 15 volumes of the Japanese Shounen Jump comic for a buck each at a second hand book store

You can also find bits and pieces on trading sites like eBay

I downloaded slime forest, and I just started so I only get katakana right now. I think it's really weird that they use obsolete katakana (like wi, we). I don't really want to learn them, but there's no option of turning them off or anything...so I guess I'll deal with it.

Slime Forest doesn't seem to work for me, but it gave me an idea..
I downloaded a snes emulator and a couple games for it.. :p
Kerokero Keroppi No Bouken Nikki and Tamagotchi Town. biggrin
It's slow to play them, because I have to think about each kana and then try to translate the words. And Tamagotchi town uses a very wierd font and some kanji, so I didn't even bother translating it.

But Kerorinu was captured by a warui mahotsukai called Jierusu who likes donuts. ;< He stole 3 donatsu from a picnicbasket in the mori.
How evil of him!

I think I must just be super bad at figuring out anything in nonlinear RPGs, but I'm not entirely sure where to go in Slime Forest, so I just wander around. O_o What am I supposed to be doing anyway?
