About Strangers With Candy"Jerri, let me give you a little piece of advice: No one makes friends with a failure. Okay? Understand?" Strangers With Candy is a bizarre comedy series which aired on Comedy Central in the late ‘90s/early 2000s. Though it only lasted 3 seasons and has been off the air for years, it has developed a fairly strong cult following. The series is meant to be a parody of cheesy after school specials, delivering a warped moral at the end of each episode (example: “Violence really isn’t the only way to solve conflict… but it’s the only way to win it.”). It centers around the day to day life of Jerri Blank—a 46-year-old ex-junkie, ex-con, ex-prostitute, who after 32 years on the street decides to pick up her life exactly where she left off—moving back in with her parents and returning to her old high school as a freshman. With every episode, Jerri comes… not much closer to putting her life back together. But at least she gets to go to homecoming! 8D

About Chuck Noblet“Okay. Everyone who doesn’t not want to avoid passing the midterm exam, raise your hands now… Okay, those of you who raised your hands will fail, as you requested.” More refs: [x][x] Chuck Noblet (as portrayed by Stephen Colbert) is Jerri’s history and social studies teacher, in addition to being assistant the principal and editor of the school newspaper. Chuck’s life to this point hasn’t exactly lived up to his expectations, leaving him extremely bitter, frequently taking out his frustration on others around him… especially Jerri. He never even wanted to be a high school teacher, he wanted to be a rock star. Lord only knows how he wound up as a history teacher anyway—he seems to know virtually nothing about the subject, constantly feeding his class misinformation (quote: “…in fact, Fidel Castro gave President Kennedy a case of syphilis so bad that eventually it blew off the back of his head. Yep. Historically syphilis is right up there with Germans.”) He also displays a definite resentment towards his students… especially Jerri. He’s trapped in what could best be described as a loveless sham of a marriage, and has one son toward whom he also displays a certain amount of resentment. He’s also involved in a passionate, love/hate affair with fellow teacher Geoffrey Jellineck which he’d like to believe is secret, but eventually becomes incredibly obvious to everyone but Principal Blackman. Still, Chuck is in a constant state of desperately trying to cover for his affair and his homosexuality. He even once very nearly attempted to murder Geoffrey just to keep their affair a secret. While not as fragile as Geoffrey, Chuck is rather sensitive about his appearance and weight, and will throw a small hissy fit if someone calls him fat. Because of all his repression, he also has a tendency to occasionally burst into tears for no apparent reason. He is extremely selfish, making essentially all his actions and decisions for his own benefit and with little to no regard for the needs and desires of others. He is also extremely cowardly, once abruptly fleeing the school rather than stand up to a bully student. In fact, Chuck seems to have virtually no redeeming qualities, save perhaps for the fact that underneath his bitterness, cowardice, and self-servitude, he at least seems to mean well. xd

About Geoffrey Jellineck"I'm not pushing you away; I'm pulling me towards myself!" More refs: [x][x] Geoffrey Jellineck (played by Paul Dinello) is Jerri’s art teacher. He also serves as the school’s theatre director and co-coaches the cheerleading team. He aspires to be a true artist, and the only thing really holding him back is that he is in fact a terrible artist, with an unrealistic concept of the worth of his art. Unlike Noblet, however, he is a fairly decent teacher. He is a relatively good-natured and friendly individual who initially shows a genuine concern for student progress and wellbeing. Even after Chuck’s bitterness and animosity starts wearing off on him, Geoffrey is still much kinder than his lover. He does, however, have a tendency towards vanity and self-absorption, going so far as to sometimes subconsciously (or maybe not subconsciously) substitute the word ‘I’ for ‘you’ in his statements. He also has a bad habit of trying to make situations all about him, including when one of his students lost a parent. A self-proclaimed pacifist, Geoffrey will never show violence towards anyone… or even so much as act to defend himself… except that one time when he ran a guy over with his car. He barely ever even defends himself when mocked and ridiculed by his students and fellow faculty—which happens fairly frequently due to his rather feminine disposition (in fact, he once spent a few months in a women’s prison on trumped up drug charges). However, he can only take so much, and when pushed far enough he will snap and start screaming and cussing and throwing a fit… and will sometimes snap with little provocation if he’s suppressing a lot. Though initially just as terrified as Chuck, Geoffrey has come to wish he could come out of the closet. He only stays in for Chuck’s sake, though once threatened to expose him as revenge for being fired from the school newspaper. Geoffrey has a strong need for affection that isn’t necessarily met by his current relationship. He also once supposedly had a son, but nobody really knows what happened to him, and it’s possible that he made the kid up.
