I know how wonderful living on a budget can be, and that it's especially difficult to to buy healthy foods when you're low on money because they're so freaking expensive. Have you looked into garbanzo beans? They tend to be relatively inexpensive if you can catch them on sale, and they're great sources of fiber and protein for the amount of calories they have. Lentils are another good choice, as well as brown rice, and they're all relatively inexpensive. If anything, they can be used as a source of variety because eating the same thing day after day sucks.

I love garbanzo beans! surprised I've been buying a lot of canned veggies and fruits, lately x3 I want to be able to at least eat on the healthier side, even though I can't get things fresh because of the budget. Canned and a few weeks old is better than none x3 And I've never actually tried Lentils... I'll have to try some :]
It's true, and dried beans and peas are a lot cheaper than the ones in cans. They cost less to ship, see, because they don't contain as much water, so you're not paying as much per pound.
