I have my own theory as to why the dinobots were "stupid". When the show aired, we were what 8-10? We assumed from the fact that dinosaurs had small brains, so that could have been what the tv stations were following. maybe, I don't know. Personally, I think the dinobots were perfect. Plus the fact that they didn't combine either made them more unique.
