I'm very willing to loan my books to my friends because I try to encourage them to read. Especially since my collection mostly consists of the classics. Anyway, I don't worry as much because I have a car, and if they're not returning it I can just drive to their house and pick it up myself.
Speaking of which, I need a friend of mine to return Inferno to me... she's had it for a month (I gave her more time because she said she was a slow reader)... she messaged me and told me she was almost finished with it, so, I'm not worried. Anyway, I'll be lending it to another friend almost immediately after that.
Anyway, yeah, I don't mind it as much because I can just pick it up myself. All things considered, my friends are fairly prompt about returning a book when I request it's return.

After some bad experiences with lending out books, I now am only willing to lend them to my best friend big brother, because he is one of the few who understand the true value of keeping books in good condition and returning them promptly. He dog-ears the pages, but so do I, so I don't mind.

I think I've had one good experience lending books out. I lent a book I liked to a coworker, and she lent me one of hers. We actually returned them within a week. Usually I don't see the person I lent my stuff to for a fair period of time, so that leaves me anxious to get my material back. People do move every now and again.

Zeromaye well, murder in books can be several different genres.... such as horror, suspence, action, adventure, detective, or even sci-fi.... you might want to tone down your topic and give a better explantion..... xd True, very true. Well, let's see. The graphic novels were historical fiction, but the murder itself would definitly be a mystery, since I'm still not sure which of the roommates has (or had last) my books. I can't really kill anyone until I know who's mostly to blame, now can I? wink

Since I buy a lot of used books (working in a used book store as I do o.o;; ), I don't mind lending out ones that are already a bit worn. However, my new-condition books only get loaned if the person promises to return them in the condition they were lent. I try not to be too persnickety about it, though. o.o;; Any special books that I don't want damaged don't get lent at all.

If you had enough evidence I'd threaten to take her to court. Tell her to either return the original books, pay for them, or pay a s**t load of money when you sue her (and possibily her roommate).

crystal_raye If you had enough evidence I'd threaten to take her to court. Another friend suggested I take it up with campus security (it happened at my college). I think I will, even though I'm afraid the theft may have occurred too long ago (but I didn't know it was theft at first!), and even though I'm completely unfamiliar with the system, since I don't live on campus. But thank you for the advice - I think you're right. Now I just need to work up the guts to do it once school re-opens this month. sweatdrop

I've probably had more good experience with lending books then bad, I've had my share of bad ones though.
Mostly I just trade books back and forth with my best friend so I trust her with my books because she's never returned one in bad condition. I take her books too so she doesn't care. Every once in a while we'll have to hold a book hostage to get one back though if it's taking too long.
The times I have lent books to other people are the bad experiences though. Mostly my bad experiences were with one person though. One of my friends borrowed my Fruits Basket once and it wasn't exactly a nice experience. Not only did I have to wait an obscenely long amount of time to get them back from her even though it was only three mangas but when they came back the covers were bent and creased. The other time I lent her books, it was the first three Ouran High books and, once again, it took waaaay too long for her to return them. I lent them to her at the beginning of the second semester and I got them back on the last day of school!
The other bad experience I had with lending books was when I lent the first two Galaxy Angel books to some girl in my science class who was practically begging to borrow them and I can't say no to anyone so I let her. She managed to return them in a timely manner, within about a week, but when I got them back the corners of the covers were bent.
I think I'm gonna stop lending books to people other then my friend I first mentioned.

I lost a book to lending once. Now I don't trust my books to anyone I don't also trust to take a bullet for me. I don't even trust my own family with my books (I've lost a few to "I'm not sure where it went, did you check your room?" as well.)
I think it's Biblio-homocide, because bibliocide sounds like you're killing a book... a book kills itself or a book kills a person. Any of which would be pretty insane.

I lend out books all the time, because of my terms of use they are ether returned, Replaced, or exchanged on time, and in good condition. My conditions are easy return my books to me, or one of my lending points on time, and in good condition or I will use your front yard/step/porch as a place to practice my bagpipes.
