I am yet to see Steampunk viably applied to a non Comic-Con setting, so I'm going to say that it isn't. It wants to be a subculture, but its not there yet.

I don't think it's a subculture because...most people who are into steampunk don't go around every single day living like steampunk =

I want a "Who cares!" vote option. biggrin That works better. I am what I am, and no one will change that- what I like is my preferences, and not determined by cultural decision. Besides that- what makes a subculture a subculture? I know, redundancy plagues me with this post thus far- but here's the thing. One year of sociology under my belt- and I think this fits, so I may have found this years, project. =D

Any part of the human nature is defined by the socialization involved by it. Religion is the best analogy I have, in a sense, because we did not go over subcultures (and I blanked on the culture value talks...) But, heres the thing. If you think yourself a god, the world thinks your mad. If a select group of people thinks your a god, then the world thinks your a cult. If a massive amount of people thinks your a religion, by jove, christianity wants to kill you. Lol, sorry...

So it is defined by popularity- and thats where the punkness comes in. Do we care about popularity? Heck no! We are who we are.

We are in the "cult status?" But I wouldn't go around calling it that. razz My friends, steam is not a religion! Thats my disclaimer for my rant. Lol.

Perhaps I am too disjointed in my efforts to rationalize what you say... and too new to the idea of focus behind my likes to try. =/

But then a question emerges.... Why aren't we a cult?
We have the influential leader - the Captain.
We have the small but adorant population...
Which field removes us from cult status?

Blast it! Shush! I'm trying to give us a little leeway with the common populace! If we become a cult, the vatican gets involved! Do you feel like having the pope two time us? (cause we all know he's a steamer.)

Eh, as long as those ruffians at Hot Topic don't catch on I don't care what it is, I like it.

And even if it does, I still don't care, the true steampunks had been there all along.

I own a book called Gothic dark glamour that states because Steam Punk is heavily related to Victorian fashion that it may considered to be gothic. But because It is still relatively new, there is no way of knowing at this point. I quote:
" Consider the importance of Victorian in contemporary Gothic fashion and, particularly, within the goth subculture. - When the goth subculture developed in the late 20th century, elements of Victorian fashion, such as mourning dress and corsets, became incorporated into goth style, precisely because ( from a modern perspective ) they seemed desirably "dark," "romantic," "mysterious" and "macabre".- The Steam Punk look in one of the Victorian dandy, and Victorian tradesman, the lady of flight, all filtered through industrial steam technology. - "As for the future of Goth style, there is a new look emerging that may become incorporated in the Gothic wardrobe," says Julia Borden. " The Gothic Steam Punk look, originating in Seattle and Portland. Steam Punk is a splinter genre of Cyberpunk literature that concerns it self with Victoriana."

If people consider themselves to be part of it as a subculture, then no-one has to right to deny it, in my opinion. People should be free to define themselves in whatever way they like, it isn't fair to put restrictions on them based on your own opinions. This policy does not, however, extend to the redefinition of existing terms (looking at you here, so-called "Vampire" lifestyle diuscussion thread).

well ya, but it's one of the more stylish ones at that.

it's not really that well know and not too concentrated in any area. If some people started a community where most of the people where steampunk, and it then spread out over time, than it would be a actual culture.

But right now it's best as a small sub-culture, I rather it not turn into what Goth became.
