I wish to be a cartoonist when I grow up. Ok, a big dream, I know. I'm willing to work for it and fight. My question: Is it necessary to do that shape figure thing? I've never done that I just draw my characters! Is it necessary to use that to create recognizable characters?

When I started off I didn't either and saw no point for it. but as you progress it's the fundaments of cartooning and a lot of forms of drawing. But don't do someone elses way just because they tell you to. Work your way up to it. That way you have you're own personalized style. With your own style it'll be better in the end.

I've got a full comic plotline and base setup. soon I'm gonna start working on the detailed script soon and then the actual panels shortly after. Then it goes online after I'm set :p. ^^

I don't often do short little comics but I do on occasion with my Double Click series. But I'd rather have a Graphic Novel published than that. So the net is the best way to get my name out there.

It's easy to use somebody else's style and pattern your drawings after them, but it will look like their style. To create a new flavor or style of your own requires the artistic struggle that is so infamously frustrating. It's just part of the process of discovering who you are as an artist. It takes a lot of time, patience and ambition and it's entirely up to you as to how far you will go! Good luck!

I didn't at first but I didn't seem to be getting any better at my work. So I started reading technique books and learned to use them. They really help while you're trying to learn. Or if you're trying to draw the same character over and over in a style that you're not familiar with. But I'm good enough now that I only use the circle for the head. Everything else I just draw.

Yeah, when I was first started out drawing I thought they just got in the way. But like Yuuichi Sato said, they're really fundamental later on. But also like they said- don't do it just because. You really have to grow into it, and when you're ready for something different maybe you'll find it helps. Just keep following what you're comfortable with. 8D

I'm in the same frigate as some of the others here - at first I found them useless and bothersome, but as soon as I gave in and used them, I found my art improved by great leaps. I find them very useful when trying to draw dynamic poses and groups of characters.

Like a lot of the others here, I initally found the shape technique to be useless, but over time I came to use it and really grew into it.
The technique is wonderful when it comes to making sure that characters look proportinate and three-dimenstional, and can help to keep your proportions somewhat consistant.
Also, if you're planning on going into animation in college, chances are you'll need to use that technique. 3nodding
It is a really helpful thing to know. heart

I never did shapes either. Though I got into the habit of drawing lines and circles/ovals (for joints and heads) to help get an idea of proportioning. I don't go crazy like some people do, but I have found that it helps to make it more accurate and saves time fixing later.
