I actually have a question about this too.

Ok, before my teen years, I was told that saying the word 'Hell' before I got Baptized is a sin and that I would go there if I said it. Ever since about a week ago, I decided to start saying it and now that I think about it, I am not to sure I should.

So, someone please tell me if this is true or not.

AH HELL NO!
DAT AIN'T TRUE, O' COURSE NOT

lol
seriously.

I really do feel sad that swearing has become as socially acceptable as it has. Yet they are still considered rude and vulgar by most (or at least where I live) Why would you want to say something that you know offends so many?
Quote:

Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

1 Peter 3:10 "For, Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech."

James 3:9-12 "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water."

Where I live, cussing has become so desensitized that everyone's saying it.

Well, that's Las Vegas for you.

Just some Sundays ago, I heard two Christian teens saying the word "********" in church, and it's become a habit for them. :/

"This is ********' awesome!"
"That's so ********' retarded!"
"What the ******** was that!?"
"Rockstar tastes so ********' nasty!"

That would piss me off. If I were you, I'd have talked to those kids.

The word "********" is just too far. Not only in Church, but in daily life.

Point out where in the Bible God says he doesn't like the particular sound vibrations caused in the air by a syllable that would appear in language only 1500-3000 years after?

Let's go with the textbook definition of ********; having sex, from the German "fokken", to thrust. Now, is it a sin for a married man to say to his wife, "I want to ******** you"? He's not using it in a vulgar way and the act he's talking about is completely acceptable in Christianity. Without using culture-centrism and an illogical aversion to certain random words, I don't see how you could call that sin.

Just a reminder to everyone, that regardless of your spiritual position on swearing, the guild policy is that no swearing take place within it. Please refrain from using the actual words as much as possible.

Language is always a tricky thing. You are correct that each society is a bit different. That is why it is important to keep your language pure no matter where you are. That may mean not using a term while you are visitin in a foreign country.

"Put to death therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Colossians 3:5-8

Thats pretty much self explanitory.

Matthew 15:11: "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."

If swearing and cursing have been a problem in your life ask God to forgive you so that your words may be good and loving words full of grace and truth. He will help you overcome this problem through His power.

What I did is not swear at all and it becomes a habbit saying no to swearing. I swore once becuase someone said they'd stop bullying me (and they told me to do it more [but i said no 3nodding ] so they kept bullying me) and I never forgave myself even though i asked God for forgiveness many times.

If you do swear occasionaly or just sometimes my addvice is to cut down bit by bit and ask God for strength biggrin

Not swearing has its awesome moments. At the same camp i went to where I met the bully (which was my roomate there), I also met someone else there which was my roomate too who swore also, Everyone at the camp swore, and he always asked me why i didn't swear and i told him that that was just what i believed in. Near the end of the camp week he came up to me and said I stoped swearing because of you.

Things like this give you a awesome feeling inside. If your friends swear and you don't, Don't give in and they might ask you why you don't.
Hit them hard with the truth and not lies.

A good rule is to ask yourself "Would I say this in the presence of The Lord/Jesus?"

If the answer is "no" you probably shouldn't be doing/saying that thing.

<3

People tell me this all the time, yet I have no problems swearing in my prayers to G-d. They are exclamatory words that add emphasis to sentences.

thats a good point
they are exclamatory words

there is also a long history behind such words
many are a refrence to one goddess or another
with that said
now one can figure out how and why such words became "bad"

So I've finally come to a conclusion

Yes, it's okay to swear in some cases, but it's better to not swear at all especially when you're around unbelievers. You don't want to ruin your testimony. Let alone just plain old cussing (ex. this is ******** awesome! this stuff is as bad as s**t! this is such a b***h to do, etc.).

Oh wow, that must have been really scary for you. The thing is, whether it's a sin to cuss or not, GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU! God will not send you to hell just for saying it. It's okay. You probably shouldn't say it for no good reason, but if you ask Jesus to forgive your sins and you're really trying to be a good Christian, you're not going to hell.

So why is it that the company we keep determines our actions? Isn't that as hypocritical as acting different around anyone else?

don't swear. It's against guild policy.
