Emos:
The death of our generation

Stop my breathing and slit my throat, I must be emo, I don't jump around when I go to shows, I must be emo, Dye in my hair and polish on my toes, I must be emo,
I play guitar and write suicide notes

A large problem today is the trend that is “emo,” the trend followers can be found anywhere and can be anyone, though they are most usually teenagers that live middle to upper class lives.
The term “emo” stands for “Emotionally Driven Hardcore-Punk” recently just changing to just “emotional,” today’s trend started by a Punk Rock band called Rites of Spring they stemmed off from the punk genre by creating a more melodic sound than and having emotionally driven lyrics, very different from the then punk acts, their fan base thinned out from the traditional punk fans. After Rites of Spring many other bands such as Embrace, Fugazi, Gray Matter, etc. followed in their footsteps, through the ‘90s emo music slowly became more and more popular, gaining the following of a minority of high school students. Through the late ‘90s into the early 2000s emo began to go more mainstream, the one underground style and music becoming popular among many, and the term “emo” began to encompass any style of rock music which the songs had emotionally driven lyrics.
Now in present day the once underground emo is now a full blown trend, the original ideas behind emo are now completely gone, even the bands that had started the style say they don’t know what emo is anymore. The trend is no longer characterized by bad music, now the emo can be classified by the stereotypical way they dress and act. The stereotypical emo kid (most if not all emo kids are stereotypical in one way or another) can be characterized by the skin tight clothes they wear, the thick rimmed glasses, a band or vintage t-shirt, and also by the hair which is longer in front and made to cover over one eye.
In the emo trend it is “cool” to be depressed, or at least pretend to be, the more depressed you are the cooler you are by emo standards, cutting, crying, writing poetry, and listening to bad music are a must to be a good emo kid these days. The emo subculture (if it can be called as much) is built by the basis that publicizing any problems you have is cool, and by acting hardcore and following this trend makes you cool.
Most of today’s emo kids like to cry (for lack of a better word) over the fact that their lives are so terrible while nearly all of them live upper middle class lives and very little problems besides the fact that their most recent “love” has just dumped them and other teenage angst.
In my opinion the emo kids that cut because it is cool to cut, and make it a style to bear their scars give people who cut a bad name. Self mutilation is a completely legitimate problem, a problem that people who have it are trying to stop, and by making it a style they make it a stereotype for all people who cut, people who actually have the problem a bad name. Emos also have a point system, where they earn points for being more emo, certain amount points are given for writing poetry, cutting, and you hit the jackpot by attempting suicide.
With so many teens becoming emo they are turning themselves into something they shouldn’t be, the emo trend is changing many teens into the mindless trend followers, the trend supposedly promotes individuality yet at the same time every member of the trend dresses exactly the same, it also promotes teens to turn toward suicide, not because of a legitimate problem but because it is cool to attempt it. By putting a stop to this trend we are helping many, many of America’s youths by stopping this where they may do something they would regret, they are also losing a large portion of their lives by wasting their time on this trend and taking so much effort and going out of their way to be the most depressed.
