Unfortunately, due to a point given by one of our members, I'm changing the contest. sad And here I was thinking that it was a good one. Here's the OLD ONE v Quote: Hello everyone, Yay! It's May, and Spring is approaching! Whoo-hoo! Okay, too enthusiastic, but it's true. It's getting warm here now, and it feels great. So, here's the May 2007 Challenge for all of you lovely Gaians! --- whee May 2007 Challenge whee --- Google(c) logo: Spring Theme As many of us may already know, Google(c) changes it's logo every once in a while; for instance, they change it during holidays like Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc., as a fun little thing for all its users. So, imagining that we work for the Google(c) company, we are all asked to create a spring themed logo for Google(c) to put on their website. Here are the rules and recommendations.
1. The word Google must be, overall, similar to the one used on the website. Click here to view the website. 2. If possible, please stick to the colors used for the letters so that we could still recognize the logo. 3. If you use the original logo to enhance it or do whatever, please credit Google(c). Also credit anything else you use in your submission, that was not created by you. 4. When crediting, you could just post it with your submission. 5. Submit your logos in this topic.
--- Additional Information --- Size: 600 pixels x 300 pixels, at the largest. Image Source: Stock photos, brushes, effects, your own pictures. (All images that are not yours must be credited.) File Format: GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP # of Submissions: 5 Deadline: May 31stAlighty then! Get crackin! This one's a bit more easier than the last contest, I think, so we should be able to get a bit more in. biggrin I encourage all of you to participate! -Joua And! Here's the new challenge! --- whee May 2007 Challenge whee --- Spring Play Poster Design It's spring, and a group of unknown actors and actresses are getting together to perform a spring play! Yay, yoohoo, not as big as broadway, but yoohoo! But, they need your help! They want you to come up with a poster design for their play! Here are some information that MUST BE INCLUDED in your poster.
1. The name of the play "Joys of Spring" 2. Group performing the play "Gaian Gladiators" 3. Date of play "May 15-17, 21-23, @ 5 pm" 4. "Starring _(whoever)_" 5. Cost of admission, you make it up. 6. Your signature, or design logo, or whatever (example: design by me inc.) or something to that.
--- Additional Information --- Size: 800 pixels x 600 pixels, at the largest. Image Source: Stock photos, brushes, effects, your own pictures. (All images that are not yours must be credited.) File Format: GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP # of Submissions: 5 Deadline: May 31stOkay, hope this one's okay. biggrin Sorry for the inconvenience! -Joua

What would really be cool is if we could somehow get Google involved. Meh.

.+Destiny.Eclipsed+. What would really be cool is if we could somehow get Google involved. Meh. They'd sue us for using their logo inappropriately and against their Identity Standards. sorry, count me out of this one. the identity standards of another company are theirs alone to use, alter and manage. I won't even touch this one with a ten foot pole in jest. neutral

And here I was thinking ths was a good one. I don't think they'd actually-actually sue, the worst we'd get is a cease&decist letter. However, a logotype is the flagship and the sacred cow of the company. There are booklets that specify down to the pixel how a logotype is used, and although the idea itself wasn't bad, I don't think that we should be ethically messing with a logo that we have no clue about in terms of guidelines.

Can you be a bit more specific about the type of play? Is it a tragedy, a comedy? What era is it set in? What types of people are they wanting to bring in? Young, old, etc?
Or do we decide this for ourselves? surprised

Or do we decide this for ourselves? surprised Everything else is all up to you. What is listed under the requirements must be present or done on your poster, but you could be as creative as you want, in adding information like that, or whatsoever. The poster is to display to the public the play and it's performance time to gain audience. Everything else is for you. biggrin

I won't even touch this one with a ten foot pole in jest. neutral As long as the logo is not used for anything, they can't actually do anything. I also doubt they'd find this contest to be inappropriate, especially since it's a private gathering doing a private activity together. You have to be a member of both Gaia and this guild to actually see the images and compete. In many pieces of art, copyrighted material - such as logos - is used without consequence. This is because the logos are not stolen, nor is any copyright actually challanged. This competition is not challenging Googles rights to its logo or trademark, its about taking an existing piece of art and modify it. This is actually similar to taking a photo of a building and altering it in Photoshop to make it taller or maybe purple. The designer of the building has the copyright of that design, but I doubt anyone would get sued for doing that. It can also be regarded as a form of pastiche or homage. Taking Googles logo, altering it and using it as the guild banner, that would be something altogether different though as it would be a true challenge of the trademark in question.

That may very well be true, but as "graphic designers" in the loosest definition, we should be aware of the identity standards and respect the fact that the wordmark is the visual identity and flagship of the product, and unless we have the ID standards in front of us, we should not be touching it.
