Most of why I'm atheist is because of quotes from philosophers, people who THOUGHT for a living. There must be hundreds out there. Go ahead and find some, or if you already know some, post them here.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" --Epicurus

Clear! *resuscitates thread*
I happened to hear this great Carlin quote while listening to "You Are All Diseased" earlier.
"When it comes to bullshit - big time, major league bullshit - you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims: religion."
Pretty much sums it all up, don't you think?

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. […] A good world needs knowledge, kindliness, and courage; it does not need a regretful hankering after the past or a fettering of the free intelligence by the words uttered long ago by ignorant men. – Bertrand Russell, Why I Am Not a Christian and Other Essays on Religion and Related Subjects

This doesn't exactly belong in the main forum. I'm going to move this to the Sub-forum...which is a more proper place.

Shedra Helix "If there is a God may he strike me dead!" ~George Carlin There seem to be an awful lot of Carlin fans around this guild. Can't say that's a bad thing, though. Even better... "If there is a God... may he strike this audience dead! ... Everyone okay?"

Quote: "God did not reward men for being honest, generous and brave, but for the act of faith. Without faith, all the so-called virtues were sins. And the men who practiced these virtues, without faith, deserved to suffer eternal pain. All of these comforting and reasonable things were taught by the ministers in their pulpits -- by teachers in Sunday schools and by parents at home. The children were victims. They were assaulted in the cradle -- in their mother's arms. Then, the schoolmaster carried on the war against their natural sense, and all the books they read were filled with the same impossible truths. The poor children were helpless. The atmosphere they breathed was filled with lies -- lies that mingled with their blood. " I don't know who said it, but it strikes me as true, and woe to all of us for that.

Seems it was Robert Green Ingersoll, according to this site.

That's enough right there to cringe.
