..: Just an Ordinary Day:..

Lara Tired back her hair and faced her reflection in the mirror. Calanthe was still asleep in her room and the rest of the house was in fairly good condition. Now it was time for the hard part.

Originally, Lara had only planned on getting one new child to fill up her house and occupy her with their company. Now she had two. Both of which knew nothing of the other. She would have to fill out the information on that when she went to pick up her new -she hopped- son.

Calanthe had been very unexpected, and thus she had raced around to get things ready. However this time she had warning and decided it best to organise everything before hand. She needed to work out were the new babe would sleep and what she would need. Calanthe had just appeared as a child, so she didn’t really NEED everything for her. But she would need a few things when the boy arrived.

But first things first, a room. In the beginning the guest bed room was supposed to belong to him. But Calanthe had ‘bagged’ that room upon her arrival and it seemed only fair as she was the oldest.
So, which room was it to be. He couldn’t have her room, were would she sleep then? And the entertainment room seemed a little…. Well it would be too much work to move everything around. So that was a ‘no’ for it as well. So it seemed the only place left was the study. It already had some built in wardrobes anyway, so at least she wouldn’t need to buy them like she did Calanthe.

“Alright Girlie, let’s get stuck into it,”
Lara shoved on a casual t-shirt and a pair of jeans. When moving heavy object around, it was wiser to go for comfort over style.

The study was very typical as to what one might expect. It wasn’t the million dollar, red carpet with wood panelled walls and varnished mahogany desk and book shelves. But it did filled hold book shelves, lamps, a desk and a computer plus chair in the corner. Not state of the art but comfortable for what a girl might need should she decided to do some actually work. Which Lara hardly ever did.

Yes, The study seemed the perfect place to change into a bed room.

The First thing Lara did, was to unplug all electronic items and remove them into another room. She pushed the chair closer to the book shelf and began shoving the books into a box which she let sit between the arm rests. She wheeled the chair out with the electronics and decided she would need to tackle the task of moving the desk before she could move the book shelf.
After about an hour of trying to flip it onto its side to move it out the room. The best conclusion was simply to drag the damn thing, which is precisely what she did.

The rest of the moving was generally very basic, into the room, grab and item, go out the room, put down the item, repeat. It wasn’t a hard task, just tedious and rhythmic.

At last the room was empty, and all that was left was to find a place for everything that had previously been in the room and to move in the bed equipment she had already purchased.
Surprisingly, the task didn’t take her as long as she had expected and she ended up completing her work within the next two hours. Now to put her feet up and relax.

“LARA! WHY IS THERE A SECOND BEDROOM WHERE THE SUDY USED TO BE?”!

Curses, there was still one last thing to do on her list.

..: Bad news :..

“So we’re going. To have a. Little. KID! STAYING HERE!” Calanthe was not impressed with the idea of having a younger brother.
“Why wasn’t I told SOONER!” Calanthe walked in a huff, pacing constantly back and forth across the small room. Her temper would have sent the small girls face a tomato red were it not for the natural tan she held in her complexion. The whole idea was, to her, idiocy.
“Yes…but you’ll still have your own room, your own bed and I’m sure he won’t be a fuss. Calanthe don’t act like this it’s pointless anyway,”
Lara pleaded desperately to the young girl. She was not used to having Calanthe so furious with her reaction. Sure the kid could overreact, but it was nothing like this. She seemed sincerely upset.
“What would be so bad, really?”

“EVERYTHING!” Calanthe turned on Lara, pulling her face into a lasting scowl and pushing her face into Lara’s, emphasizing her point.
“Send. It. Back,” She pronounced every word accurately. As if she was making a point. Lara as the child, Calanthe as the superior.
“You can’t just ‘send’ a child back where it came from Calanthe. Things don’t work like that,” The winged woman shook her head, pulling away from the young child.
“ What’s done is done. You just have to accept it the way it is. He’s coming and it’s far too late to stop things now. Nothing can be done, even if I did want to send it back,”
“So you want to send it back?”
“No! I didn’t say that, I Jus-”
“ Then you are obviously bisist. Why would you try to send something back if you want it? You haven’t looked because you don’t want to!”
Lara rolled her eyes, ignoring the fact that Calanthe had misplaced the word. Using ‘Bisist’ instead of ‘Biased’. But her mind didn’t have time to think over Calanthe’s lack of grammatical skills. She had to do something about this dispute with Calanthe. Clearly, asking the girl, was the wrong way to handle the situation. Lara straightened her posture and placed her arms tensely by her side.

Calanthe had turned her back on Lara, clearly in a gesture of rudeness to spite her soft hearted guardian.
She had not been expecting the sudden pull as Lara spun her about, bringing the bickering pair to face one another.
“Look,” Lara’s voice was sympathetic but unyielding. “ This ‘adoption’, so to speak, has been arranged before you even came to stay here. Thus, I can assure that there is near to naught that will change my mind. I admit, I did not intend to have two young people running about but I refuse to exchange one of you for the other. I won’t throw you out just for the sake of the soon to be ‘brother’ you will have and I won’t let you ruin his chance of being happy here either,”
Lara stared into Calanthe’s eyes, or rather her eye lids. The girl seemed to find the wall far more approachable than her it seemed. Lara let her arms which rested on Calanthe’s shoulders fall, waiting for the girl to react.

With a furious and almost tearful look, Calanthe marched past Lara and sat down on the bed in her room, not bothered to close the door. She leaned against the bed head, muttering angry sentiments to herself and about this horrible new brother that would be coming to stay. How she hated the idea, not even the heavenly scented sea breeze which blew in through the window helped her relax. It only reminded her of the anger she felt towards her half siren custodian.

Back in the living room, Lara sighed exasperatedly, looking on as Calanthe shoved her knees into her chest. Just as before she was staring at the wall ahead, only she talked with it now. The wings which crowned Lara’s head slumped, it seemed her entire being felt the wave of discontent for Calanthe. She hadn’t shouted or hit Callie, but she still felt the guilt for being the reason for making the girl unhappy.
Not even the heavenly scented Vanilla-coconut breeze which blew in through the door helped her relax.
It only reminded her of the distraught sense she felt towards her fragrant little girl.

..: The Cabbage that Wasn't a Cabbage :..

And there she sat. Or kneeled rather, the winged maid was sitting upright on her knees, bending over the square, wooded box which sat in front of her. She had only just finished packing it and she took the moment to look at her handy work.
It was not what she had expected, but all the same Lara had been compelled to follow the direction given to her.
What Larainne Kardon was looking at exactly, was a planting box, just filled with the soil she had purchased from the nursery not far away, and the cabbage plant left on her door step over night.

It had been coming up to eight in the morning when Lara stepped out of her doors to fetch the mail, when she found the strange ‘gift’ left for her to receive. Along with it came a card with instructions to take care of the cabbage and keep it in safe conditions. Because apparently, this was going to be the child she adopted.

Normally, one would naturally be VERY sceptic of such an idea. But it was hard for Lara to believe the idea completely impossible when all she need do was look over her shoulder and spot the child with white hair whom had sprung from a broken oil cup. So here she sat…

Dirt was thrown all over the deck from where Lara had failed at pouring the dirt into the potting box via a wheel barrow. She had very little knowledge on gardening at all, but then again she didn’t know what came with raising a child either. But if Gardening was suddenly a new requirement for bringing up children, then she would work her hardest to make the plant grow! Or what ever it was it should or might do.

At the moment, her first experience in children was running around on the beach. That was one good thing for Callie at least. A house directly in front of the beach meant she could go and run about in the sand almost whenever she wanted, and it only took a glance out the back window for Lara to see she was still in one piece. Today however, Lara was on the back porch anyway, so she could practically hear Callie laughing her brains out at the strange grabs shuffling by, or her distress when finding the mote around her sand castle destroyed. It was honestly hard to pick her age up at times. The appearance of a twelve year old but amused by things which could entertain a six year old. She had also noticed Callie was much more suited to being by herself than with others. Around others she was sarcastic and borderline rude. But by herself she could very easily smile and be amused by her own day dreamings.
What was that girl thinking?

Lara stood up at last, brushing the stains off her clothes, luckily she had chosen to wear a pair of jeans and a baggy shirt while gardening. It was the only pair of ‘ratty’ clothes she had. Living by yourself for so long meant you had more money to spend on yourself, so she never had to hold onto old clothes and part of wished that could continue even with Callie and this new one. Lara turned around and headed towards the kitchen for a drink-

“Why all the dirt?” asked a curious Calanthe, gazing at the spilt soil everywhere.
Calanthe really had no idea, because once Lara had realised what the cabbage was, she had sent Callie down to the beech to play so she could plant the cabbage without grief. However she had been in such a rush to stop Calanthe knowing, she forgot that Callie didn’t actually know that her brother WAS the cabbage. And for the moment…wouldn’t it be better if she didn’t know? It had taken her awhile to stop looking at Lara with such a sour expression.

“Just gardening. I went down to the nursery and got the soil this morning. Things won’t grow in beach soil. Too much salt. Needed the good stuff for it,”
Once her question was answered the curiosity was gone and Calanthe went back to her…less cooperative self.
“ What do you need it for? The beach is already good scenery so you don’t need ‘plants’. You’ll probably want me to eat it when it’s grown,” She made a face, not hiding her dislike for healthy food.
“Nope,” Lara replied. Being completely honest. Callie was NOT going to eat her brother.
“ I was just wanting to grow something, a new hobby I guess,”
At this Calanthe stopped to think.
“ Think I could have a hobby…?” a natural response for a twelve year old. She needed something to fill her time.
“ Well… if you want you can garden it for me. I’m sort of already over it. Too much time outdoors and way too much dirt,” She gestured at the mess. She really would have to hose It off.
“I…can do that,” Calanthe said with a nod. Suddenly remembering something.
She had met a lovely lady at a flouriest named Crystal. She was very kind to Calanthe and she recalled Crystal telling her taking care of her plants made her happy. Maybey growing something would make her happy too. It was then that Calanthe decided to take care of the thing.

“ Okay. Now what do I have to do to take care of it?” Callie turned to her guardian looking for answers.
“You could always…stop calling it ’it’. I’m sure you would hate it if I had called you ‘it’ right?”
The girl nodded in agreement. What a terrible thing it was to be without a name.
“ I already named it actually…while I was potting it. You should stick with the name I gave it,” Lara said the words sheepishly, as if she was admitting something wrong.
At this Calanthe rolled her eyes. “Fine, just take the fun out of it for me huh? Well what’s it?” Her tone picked up an octave in annoyance. Lara let it slide.
“Lucien,”
“Fine,”Calanthe looked at it again, putting her hands on her hips and then walked into the entertainment room where Lara had moved all the study stuff to. If she was to take care of ’Lucien’ She would need information about it right? TO THE INTERNET!

Lara smiled at her handiwork of the situation, standing up to admire it more clearly as it disappeared into the house. Right before she turned around and saw all the dirt she now had to push off the Veranda.

..: 10 Steps to keeping your Cabbage :..

As Calanthe found out, Cabbages did not need particularly need a lot of attention so to speak. She knew this because the internet site had told her. Calanthe had been taking care of the plant for a month now, watering it regularly, paying attention to give it extra on hot days. She aerate the soil which deter#9A7852 insect and pests from laying their eggs, and added A layer of garden compost around the base of it, all under the watchful eye of her guardian Lara. Lara would always find herself smiling when she saw her darling daughter doing this. But as Callie had commented, it wasn’t a normal smile. When the white headed girl had confronted her over it, she explained that the smile was ‘creepy’ as if she was planning something.

Since this encounter, Lara had noticed Callie become very suspicious of her guardian, checking to see if Lara had done something to her plant. Checking no spring traps or practical jokes where about to be played on her. Thus far she had found nothing, and Lara knew she never would. The joke would not come until it was ready, and Callie would hopefully become so attached to her plant that she wouldn’t mind at all that it would turn into a small child.

“You’re doing it AGAIN!” Calanthe fumed through the window on the deck. Lara caught a look at her own face in the window’s reflection. Damn it! She thought she had been in control, that her smile had been only in her mind, but it seemed it had escaped onto her lips. Again, as her daughter pointed out. “Sorry darling,” she said apologetically, laughing on the inside. “You just look like you’re having so much fun. It’s catching,” She explained. Calanthe rolled her eyes. “Just go inside, no need to watch me,” Now it was Lara’s turn to roll her eyes.

“Okay, but if anything happens…come get me straight away,”
Calanthe’s expression was priceless, obviously she had taken Lara’s words to mean today was the day she was going to play her practical joke. She was wrong of course. From the corner of her eye, Lara caught Calanthe looking around the plant sceptically, searching for that elusive spring loaded trap most likely.

Once inside, Lara went into her own bedroom, pulling open a side table draw to look at the small note which had come with the cabbage. It was basic instructions, with hardly any inclination of what was going to happen. All she knew was that a child was coming from that plant, and that under no circumstances was she to eat the vegetable.

She hugged the note which was her only connection to whatever child lay inside the cabbage. She placed the note back into its draw and moved over to the window to see if the view would allow her to look at her green thumbed little girl. Calanthe was sitting next to it now, brown hands clapping against each other to try and get the dirt of her palms. She rolled her neck back on her shoulders, and looked over at the cabbage again. Lara had been surprised when she realised not long ago that no new leaves had sprouted up, nor had any of the old leaves died off, and she was curious if Calanthe had realised this to. Maybe that’s why she worked on it so hard, because she thought she was doing something wrong.

Lara pulled away, realising what Calanthe was missing.

“Need this?” Lara said, holding a bag of fertiliser in her two hands, it was rather heavy. About the same weight as a three litre milk bottle. Calanthe looked up at Lara. “I thought I said stop smiling at me creepy like"
The guardian's smile dropped, rasing her brow. “I thought adults said things like that,’ Lara responded, setting the bag down, she sat down now. Out of the dirt, but close to the cabbage and Calanthe.
“Guess you thought wrong silly,” Calanthe grinned, a cheeky look making the roses on her cheeks come out all the more.

“You’re taking very good care of him,” Lara commented, looking a the healthy green thing. Not that it had ever looked unhealthy.
“Lucien,” Calanthe corrected. Lara nodded. “I’m worried about Lucien though. I read that he gets yellow leaves sometimes and that I’m meant to pull them off. But I haven’t seen any. I think they might be inside,” She said, a look of worry on her adorable face. “Maybe you’re just keeping him healthy,” Lara suggested.
“Nope. He’s not growing either,” So Calanthe had noticed.

“Well, he’s a special cabbage,” Lara replied, leaning back on her hands.
“Special?”
“Yeah. Rare type and all that,”
“Oh” this seemed to be a good enough explanation for Callie.
“So, Lucian is okay, he’s just a special cabbage?”
“Mhmm,” Lara agreed. Well, she was telling the truth.
“and I still won’t have to eat it once it’s grown?” Callie added slyly.
Lara rolled her eyes playfully. “No, but you do have to eat the broccoli we’re having for dinner,”
Callie groaned in a disapproving way. “Yeah, get all nice with me first, then announce we’re having broccoli for dinner,” Calanthe got up, heading for the shower.
Lara laughed, like Lara hadn’t noticed Callie chomping on the green vegetable raw earlier today.

..: A walk in the Park :..

It hadn’t taken Lucien very long to become tired of sitting down. He was now walking on his own two feet. And he was walking rather well if Lara said so herself. He could even run some distances when he wanted to, often that meant when he heard Lara taking out sweets such as ice-cream, biscuits or the sugar bowl even. He had come to enjoy licking his finger and putting it into the sugar bowl, then pulling it out again to marvel at the sugar crystals which attached themselves to his finger, before popping the same finger into his mouth and giggling at the sweet taste. Not that Lara let him do this often, mainly it was Calanthe who did that, doing everything she could do excite him, the trouble making girl. Lara wasn’t sure if Callie did this because she liked Lucien, or if it was just to annoy her.

Calanthe was returning from a trip to the beach, Lucien on her hip, the babe must have been waiting for her at the front door. It was a pity the girl didn’t realise her dark headed brother looked up to her.
“You wanna take him?” She said, a slight trace of lethargy in her tone. She was almost used to Lucien doing things like this to her now. Almost. Lara could see the pair getting along when they were both older but for now it seemed Lucien seemed to test Callie’s patience, a lot.
“No Callie!” Lucien garbled. He was practically putting sentences together now. But his vocabulary was minimal. “Wanna stay up!”

Callie rolled her eye. “Can we go out! Please. We haven’t done that for ages,”
“Nonsense,” Lara contradicted. “You go to the beach almost every day,”
Callie groaned, plopping the baby onto the floor, where he sat looking dejected. “Callie!”
“That’s practically home! Even you would know that!,” Callie whined, she groaned exaggeratedly and collapsed onto the nearest chair before she utte#9A7852 the most dreadful words a parent could hear. “I’m booo#9A7852!” She exclaimed. Dang it, her bo#9A7852om meant Lara would spend the next half hour forced to help her think of things to do.

“Use you’re imagination Callie, I shouldn’t have to think these things up for you,” She responded, stopping what she had been doing to pick up the sad faced little boy. “Are you bo#9A7852 too Lucien?” She asked, only to be acknowledged as he nodded his head up and down vigorously. “Bored too,” he confirmed, in case Lara hadn’t gotten his point. “Well…I guess we could go out,” Lara said at last with a beaten sigh.

“Great!” exclaimed an excited Calanthe, her mood suddenly shifting for rag doll layabout to an energetic child. “Where are we going, what should I wear, can I get a drink when we go out, do I have to wear socks, I don’t want to wear socks Lara..,” she continued prattling on, following Lara into Lucian’s room. “I don’t know Callie!” she said frustrated by the questions. “Where do you want to go?” Lara asked, not quite sure where they would be going herself.

“Park!” Lucien chipped in. A park was something he had seen on the tv, it looked grassy and had sand as well.

“I think a park is a good idea, don’t you Callie?” She looked over at the sandy girl.
“It’s better than here. And no socks right?”
“I want you to wear sandals. Yes?”
Fine,” The little white headed girl went off to her room, no doubt picking her best sandals out. Though why Lara had no idea, she would probably kick them off as soon as they stepped onto the grass.
“The park was a good idea my little one,” she said, putting him down in his crib for a moment while she went about getting his shoes for him. She bent down to put the sandals on, doing up the Velcro. Not that Lucien was pleased about this, he began kicking and trying to undo them as soon as Lara had moved her hands away.

Lucien took him and herself outside the room then, sitting him in the middle of the dinning room floor so she could see him and began getting some thing together. Water bottles, snacks and her wallet. Not a picnic, but the food she brought would be at least half the price of whatever the vendors around the place were selling.

“Ready to go?” She said, looking at a rocking Lucien. He was looking into the carpet, pulling at loose pieces of thread.
“Ready Lara!” Callie replied, charging into the room. He flip flops softly thumping on the carpet.
“Well then, we best be off,”
